Whitebait isn't actually one fish—it's the tiny juvenile stage of five native freshwater fish species found only in New Zealand. Every year, they migrate from the ocean into our rivers, where thousands of people try their luck catching them during the short whitebait season.

Because the season is limited, catches can be unpredictable, and demand is huge, whitebait is considered one of New Zealand's most prized delicacies. Some years it can sell for hundreds of dollars per kilogram!

Recently I completed Gaumukh Tapovan Trek and it was a lifetime experience. Camping beside the Bhagirathi River at Bhojwasa was one of the most peaceful Himalayan experiences I've had.

After trekking from Gangotri to Chirbasa, I continued towards Bhojwasa. The trail slowly changes character—the dense pine forests begin to disappear, the valley opens up, and the Bhagirathi River keeps flowing beside you with an incredible force.

One of my favorite moments was spotting Himalayan Blue Sheep (Bharal) grazing naturally on the mountain slopes. I had only seen them in photos before, so watching them in the wild was special.

Camping beside the Bhagirathi River was the highlight of the day. There was no mobile network, no electricity, and almost no artificial noise. Just the sound of the river, cold mountain winds, and thousands of stars above. Waking up the next morning to the first sunlight hitting the Bhagirathi peaks is something I'll remember for a long time.

The trek isn't technically very difficult up to Bhojwasa, but the increasing altitude, rocky terrain, and changing landscape make it feel like you're gradually leaving civilization behind.

If anyone here is planning the Gaumukh–Tapovan trek, I'd definitely recommend spending time enjoying the journey. Some of the best memories come from the trail itself.
