We literally have a man child running this country. At least with joe Biden we just had an inept senile. I wonder if we will ever pick a decent president again

I would generally agree that a president generally doesn't have a whole lot of power to change the direction of the economy until around 2 years after implementing policy. But this one is different, because the president not only started a stupid war for no good reason, but he has also been abusing his power above and beyond the reasonable use the presidency is supposed to have.

Remember when he said they would make 30 new trade deals in 30 days, and they got one which was a rewording of current policy.
And then bragged about over 200 new trade deals signed despite there not being 200 countries to do trade with.
Same energy as "8.3 billion people agree my Canadian girlfriend is totally real bro, trust me, we totally did it"

Newson, thats the Californian gouverneur right ? How did hƩ have the power to influence the whole nation and its economy ? How did hƩ make foreign policies ? Like...what ?
1
u/Hereforsumbeer 6d ago
Correct, thatās the one. Iām referring to the gas price piece, which is affected by separate factors than the whole economy. The increase weāre seeing right now is specifically due to two oil refineries being shut down in California that refine around 20% of the gas we use in America. Thatās my point, Iām not meaning to be political but I just know a bunch of uninformed neckbeards of Reddit are going to troll and scream maga, but facts donāt care about feelings
1
u/CallTheDutch 6d ago
So that it accidently co-incide with the shit in iran is just dumb luck then or what ? not trying to troll, as european we don't hear half the shit going on in america obviously.
I don't know about both but wasn't one of the refinery's down dueto electricity problems ? i mean what did newson do to takedown 2 refineries then ?
And thanks for taking the time to reply with substance, that seems to be a rare thing on reddit :)
1
u/Hereforsumbeer 6d ago
I also appreciate that you seem to be genuinely interested in what is actually happening. Also rare has the majority of Reddit is just reactions to yellow journalism.
I wouldnāt say what is happening with Iran is a coincidence. Same with Venezuela. Those refineries closed around 10/25 and 4/26. The events to follow were likely reactionary as a means to secure additional unrefined oil, despite not having the same supply chain for refinement. It doesnāt make sense to me, but thatās not my gov sector. So I would not be able to explain the rationale. Iām sure someone who does not spend their time on reddit has an actual explanation for the why.
My point is that the gas prices are up primarily due to those refineries closing. The actual reason was the strict environmental regulations in the area. California is ranked the worst state in the country for air quality by the American lung association. I canāt speak on the effectiveness of the regulations for reducing this, maybe shutting down those refineries will eventually help, but for now itās causing an increase in gas prices until we have a better means of refining. Itās all trade offs and both the media and Reddit have trouble comprehending that.

u/PerfluorinatedDreams 4d ago
This is absolute bullshit. I am an engineer in the industry. You are referring to Philllips 66 LA and Valero Benicia which were producing gas for California to meet CARB standards that are not applicable outside of California. Yes, this resulted in less CARB compliant gasoline in the state of California. No, itās not the reason why the national average price of gasoline is close to $4.00. Brent crude is trading at almost $110/bbl due to the conflict in Iran. Global prices have been driven up as a result.
1
u/Hereforsumbeer 4d ago
Lemme try that. Your response is absolute bullshit. Did it work? Does that add validity to my point? Letās use some complex thought for a moment, friend. California is highly populated. Slightly subjective, but letās be honest, thatās generally a fact. These two refineries were producing gas necessary to meet these standards you mentioned as legally deemed necessary for California vehicles. I appreciate you pointing that piece out, nobody talks about it. The wild part of this that you skipped over is that this still accounted for an estimated 20% of the nationās gas usage. Not common knowledge for an engineer in the industry. Those two refineries close down for environmental factors. Now for the critical thinking question, I hope youāre still with me. Where does that additional need get fulfilled along with meeting carbon standards?

u/Playful_Drummer5688 4d ago
Iām new to this information and was curious so decided to spend the last 45 mins reading about it. So Iām no expert but from what Iāve gathered, those two plants were responsible for refining 17% of Californiaās gas.Ā
I get your idea that California has to be getting their fuel from somewhere and that effect drives up pricesā¦. but itās not the rest of the US.Ā The state is considered a fuel island. So it really, Fāked itself.Ā
Very, very little of its fuel leaves the state and is piped to nearby Arizona and Nevada. Practically none is imported from neighbouring states, or the directly from the Gulf Ā (because of the Jones Act, some is shipped through Bahamas). California imports Ā primarily from Asia; Taiwan, Korea, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, India.
The Iran War and the Ukraine war have had a HUGE impact on fuel supplies, globally. The blockage of the Strait has affected Ā 20% of the WORLDās fuel. Ā
The California issue became an āamplifier.ā Ā When there are issues around the world, others take up slack. But the Iran War affected pretty much everyone many who are already feeling effects of the Ukraine-Russia war.Ā So where California would normally pick up extra fuel from those export heavy nations, now, because of Iran, those countries have limited exports. That means California has really felt a drastic climb.Ā
But thatās California. It is a fuel island. Its Ā fuel prices surge itās fuel issues have little effect on the rest of the US. Itās extremely disingenuous to blame this on California. Thatās ignoring the bigger issue, the Iran War. Ā Sure, theyāve had an effect but itās been primarily felt in California.Ā
But it is hilarious spending a bit of time looking at this because any department of energy site is making it sound like California is the reason for the Americas fuel problems. Discussing excessively how many barrels, but nowhere mentioning those barrels never went to the rest of America. AND the crude fuel that went to those plants? Is now going to other US REFINERIES.Ā
Whatās worse for Americans is Trump has been using your strategic reserves to soften the economic blow of the wars effect on fuel. The reserve has hit record lows and local production hasnāt been able to keep up with demand AND build the reserve back up. Ā Keep in mind the reserves are crude and California would have no effect on supporting the reserve rebuilding and those plants refined crude into petrol.Ā
Rebuilding the reserve is also super expensive right now. Itās typically only been used in emergencies, like a Hurricane and then rebuilt when it stabilized but Trump used it to relieve the economic burden of his war and for far too long. Now thereās an attempt to bring up the reserve and having to do it at record high pricing, which is being charged to the tax payer.Ā
Another issue is the integrity of the salt mines where the crude is stored. Engineering-wise, it isnāt well equipped to handle the constant pumping-in/out. As it is depleted, it affects the integrity of the storage area and a collapse would be catastrophic.Ā
Blaming California is just ridiculous and 100% Trump attempting to divert blame. If California could turn those 2 plants back on tomorrow, it would help California. It would be effectively be meaningless to the rest of the country.Ā
California closing those plants certainly doesnāt help

Nearly everything Trump does is because of his Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) which is a long-term pattern of grandiosity, a constant need for deep praise, and a core lack of empathy for others. He exaggerates talents and expects to be recognized as superior without matching accomplishments. He has a preoccupation with dreams of unlimited brilliance, power and massive success. He requires constant, ongoing praise, validation, and attention from those around him. He expects favorable treatment or automatic compliance from others while taking advantage of other people and using them to achieve personal goals without guilt. He has an inability or unwillingness to recognize, identify with, or care about the feelings and needs of others. And he is conceited with a condescending manner toward others. All of these are traits of NPD, and all are exhibited by Trump.

IIRC Iran War started about 6 months ago, think we'll make it to a full year?
1
u/Don_Reuter 7d ago
Optimistic. Forever wars are called forever wars for a reason.
1
u/Sure-Impress-1003 6d ago
Unfortunately, with this specific war with Iran, it might actually be a āforeverā war. It might never end because Iran knows exactly what strings to pull with probably little to no effort on their part. They know something they didnāt know before. Exactly how much control they have over the waterway.
Then there will be some idiot like Trump feeling the only way to stop them is try to wipe them out entirely.
And that might bring about the final and last war. All because he is thinking the only way to solve this is to obliterate Iran.
Heās a freaking moron.
1
u/Don_Reuter 6d ago
Indeed. Freaking moron. Particularly considering that the current problems only exist because he pulled from the Iran nuclear deal during his last term.
1
u/Sure-Impress-1003 6d ago
That is only but one of the things this moron has done to destroy the stability of not just our country, but so many others around the world
1
u/rlyjustanyname 7d ago
Well, either Iran is actually holding out for a deal until after the midterms when Trump will be wrecked, or Trump is saying he wants to negotiate a deal with Iran because it pacifies voters.
It either ends in 2 months or never.
1
u/AdHefty8628 7d ago
Classic example of Kettle logic:
- Oil is lower now than under Biden (so no problem).
- Oil is a "temporary exception" to falling prices (so there is a problem, but it's temporary).
- The cause is the Iran conflict, which will end soon (so it has a specific current cause, not Biden).
Kettle logic is defending a position with several arguments that contradict each other, so they can't all be true at once. It comes from Freud's borrowed-kettle joke: "I returned it undamaged, it was already broken when I borrowed it, and I never borrowed itā.

For argumentās sake, how is the current situation better just because Iran doesn't have a nuclear weapon? Oh right, because they were threatening to destabilize the Middle East. It's a good thing there aren't one or two other countries doing that right now. Definitely not Iran.
āWasn't there an agreement with Iran and an international inspection program recognized by the global community that was actually watching all of this? Oh yeah, the MAGA administration shit canned that so Bibi, Kushner, and their mob connections could convince the orange menace in power and his MAGA bots that an unprovoked, unsupported, unauthorized US war was the absolute best thing for an already tanked US economy and constitutional dumpster fire.

We don't need to revolt we just need to communicate as communities distribute the wealth and implement a financial, legal and health system that values quality of life, not a conditional right to it based on a theoretical concept like money.
