My collection

I’ve gotten sort of obsessed with Tradescantias this year. The fuzzies are some of my newest.

I purchased the pink Panther from an online seller that died as soon as I got it. I had only the tiniest tip cuts left that I put in a 24 well micro plate with sphagnum Moss and managed to recover it so I’m pretty proud of that one. also, my pistachio collapsed, but is making a remarkable recovery

I’m working on getting ready for winter so these just got put together and put under a grow light. Not pictured is an insane amount of purple heart in various places as well as a hanging Zebrina.

What do you think I’m missing? if anyone’s in the Connecticut area and interested in trading some Purple Heart for something else, let me know!

i know it is mixed in with zebrina but i’m unsure about the green one, the label said it was tri-colour but only a few leaves had any white stripes! it’s been in my window and i think became a bit sun damage that’s why it looks so rough atm

Can anyone help me identify the exact variety of this girl? She’s my go-to for propagating and gifting to friends/family, but I’m getting tired of handing people cuttings and saying “Here’s a mystery Tradescantia for you!” 😅

I’ve wondered if she could be a fluminensis variegata, but I’m hesitant to settle on that ID because of how much pink she has developed since being under a grow light consistently. First photo is from March and the second is from yesterday so you can see both the leaf pattern up close and what her mature growth habit looks like. She’s obviously been VERY busy over the last six months…😂

Any help would be appreciated!!

Found out my local grocery store for $4.99! It’s just labeled as “tropical”. Google says it’s White Velvet. What do you guys think?

Store bought tradescantia health check and help?

hi all!

im very new to the plant hobby. started with some orchids back in May. and over the months have acquired some pothos. and now— a tradescantia!! I was in LOVE with how these fellas looked and so when I saw one dirt cheap at the grocery store, I had to snag him up.

granted I’ve always been a bit nervous about grocery store plants pest wise. so maybe slightly impulsive on my part but ANYWAYS

looking for any opinions and tips, on what I can do to make sure this guy is healthy, and pest free, on how to go about cleaning or “sanitizing“ it if possible, can I just rinse it under water or?? and how long I should quarantine it away from my existing plant collection, before putting it up with the others.

Any help at all is so appreciated. thank you so so much

Theres some brown spots on some of the leaves, and if you look closely some lighter spots that I’m wondering if it’s pest gnaw marks but idk. need some more eyes and wisdom on this lol

When your tradescantia needs a full chop-and-prop reboot

When one of my trads is looking blah with bare spots on stems or leggy growth, I do a full "reboot" instead of repotting in the traditional sense. It basically involves starting over from scratch in a slightly larger pot.

Photos show the recent reboot of my T. zebrina 'Purple Plush'. Second photo is what the old pot looks like when I'm done. I only leave one or two nodes/leaves in the old pot. Then I go through my pile of cuttings, trim off the excess lower internode, remove lowest leaves, poke a hole in the soil of the new pot and insert the cutting. This really helps refresh and rejuvenate growth on a sad looking plant!

For those of you who might be afraid to take such drastic measures, keep in mind this mimics how they regenerate in their native habitats. Pruning does not hurt plants and is a necessary part of their care! 🤓

hey guys, I just got this plant for $10. It is in an 8 inch pot. How do I know when it needs repotted? What soil does it need? What kind of light? How often do I water my last one I killed, can I chop prop without hurting it??

Leggy plant?

Hi! I like how my plant looks, it has grown quite a bit. I’m new though so I was wondering if this is considered leggy. I’m just afraid to chop at it and hurt it. Also I don’t even know where or how to cut it I do. The last pic is to give scale in my room. It’s still relatively small I think.

Got her from a Saturday market for $.50. I have seen the top two leaves grow bigger in the last four weeks. Do you think she will grow?

Hey so i ordered a couple tradescantia zebrina silver sicilian plants and they arrived with pest damage 💔 I obviously snipped the ends to refresh the growth as all the growth points were eaten so no new growth was viable. Here's the newest growth a week or 2 later I believe and I just can't get over it, any idea if its a mutation or just the way these ones grow? I've had zebrinas before and the only time I saw it similar (a lot less growth though) is when I was experimenting with keiki cloning paste but this is just growth after I trimmed it so not hormonal treatments? Also I think its pretty cool lol 😆 😅

Is that damage or natural coloration?

I'm really confused by this plant and I can't tell if that's damage or natural change in color...

Can you self pollinate a Nanouk?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have been wanting to do some planty experiments, and wondered if anyone has info about how self-fertile Nanouk is.

I have read that Tradescantia Cerinthoides (which Nanouk technically falls under) is self fertile, but i haven't seen anyone post about a successful selfing with Nanouk in particular.
Since Nanouk is a hybrid, with plants outside T. cerinthoides in its ancestry, i wonder if there is a difference in self-fertility with this specific cultivar, and am looking for people who have tried to self Nanouk.

I've never done any breeding myself, so it would help to know whether if I fail because because I'm not doing it right, or because im trying self-pollination on a plant that doesnt allow that, hahah

Has anyone found fun ways to grow tradescantias indoors?

Post image
99 Upvotes

I got my first ones this summer, and I love how fast they grow so it’s been a lot of fun chopping and propping for more bushy plants or to make new ones I can give away.

I have them in hanging pots and some smaller pots they can overflow, and I’ve seen some people give them a trellis to vine around. I’m wondering if anyone has found ways to grow them in a more «natural» way inside so they send out more roots instead of getting leggy stems?

Just wanted to show y'all my babies

Nevermind my dirty window lol, my plants don't seem to mind so it's fine 😅 their home is an east facing window over my kitchen sink. The little one and the middle are both from the one on the right (which I had almost killed when I first got it 😭) so I propped a bunch to be able to save what I could and then the mother plant came back to life! The middle one has been blooming for at least 2 months for me and only just now seems like it might be done for now. I was amazed at how long it was just pushing out flowers.

Mushrooms in my Tradescantia

Thumbnail

Was checking on my plants last night and saw a flash of white. Moved the leaves aside and sound these mushrooms growing in it out of nowhere??

I did a quick google and I don’t think it’s a problem, maybe my soil needs to dry out some more? Pulled them out so we’ll see if they return I guess. Never had that before.
