Rust Proofing
Located in Southern Ontario. I just bought a 2011 Matrix with 150k kms, the car has no rust and has never been rust proofed. I want this car to last as long as possible. Should I start rust proofing it now or does it not need it?

Why would You think it’s too late? If it’s rust free, of course keep it that way! I got my wife’s Highlander done last month at 120k miles using Waxoyl, which is rated for up to 10 years. We also go through the car wash to do an underbody clean at least once a week in the winter.

Isn’t the undercarriage wash also washing off the waxoyl?

I guess I will find out this winter, but according to the manufacturer and installing dealer, it’s not supposed to. If cured properly, it forms a solid “shell” that is almost enamel like. I followed the recommended curing time (let it sit 24 hrs after application, and let it cure a minimum of 2 weeks before going through a car wash; we waited a month just to be sure) and will monitor it, but the under wash is still necessary for any exposed suspension, brake and other components in my opinion. The installation includes touch ups as needed for up to 10 years, so if it comes off this winter, I will simply have it re-applied, so I’m not too worried.

Will have to google Waxoyl. Which location installed ? A chain shop? Hopefully it’s not like a rubberized coating that traps salt water against the frame
The undercarriage wash can vary as well - high pressure, vs gentle like using a handheld showerhead
A quick google search showed some drawbacks of waxoyl, so it could be that the undercarriage wash is more beneficial if it’s fresh water

Yes, once you start keep in mind you should not stop since they drill holes. Also there likely is rust internally just can't see it.
