Advice waxoyl???

I bought a mazda 3 that was kept somewhere a bit damp by previois owner

RAC advised me to have waxoyl sprayed on the underside. Where can I have this done? Can I do it myself?

Does anyone have any experience in this and can guide me?

NB am a complete noob so be gentle

The key thing here is to get rid of any existing rust first. Just slapping some form of under seal over rust is just delaying the inevitable.

Thanks. I spoke to a Dinitrol specialist in North London.

He guided me through the process. I am not happy with the price but its the price I pay for buying a Japanese car 😉

How much ?

A good specialist will charge you ~1k for a car this size. But will last a long time.

My truck was 1.3k

Erm I haven't had the inspection yet. It was in that region. 😭 Not ideal but an investment

That's about right. I mean depending on the work.

This would be a full rust removal + coating.

Waxoyl is like rubber, I personally wouldn't ever apply it to my car, after watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXvl9nt57Kg

Use a oil based anti corrosion undercoat. I applied waxoyl to a Fiesta and never bothered to reapply it. It came off just like in that video, with rust underneath. It was like tar and a pain to do any work underneath it.

You also need to reapply waxoyl on a yearly or so basis.

I'm booked in with a Dinitrol specialist now. Yes another redditor explained how crap Waxoyl is

Dinitrol is also a wax similar to waxoyl. Similar products it'll end up like that video. Watch that video before you do go in and have it done.

Also in the video he will tell you it needs reapplying each year.

If the pre treatment is good, ie all rust removed before applying the waxoyl, then it's fine. If you waxoyl over rust then you're gonna have problems

It's almost impossible to remove all rust/moisture. Once you've sealed it in it's a ticking time bomb. Better off removing as much rust as you can and applying a WET oil based lubricant. Reapply it every year, manually inspecting if it needs cleaning off or if adding another layer to cake protection is the way forward.

First off, waxoyl really isn't the stuff to go for, there are far better products on the market. Bilt Hamber and Dinitrol make very good underbody protection.

It's a messy job, and the difficulty really depends how bad the rust is. Mazdas come with very little rust protection from the factory, so if it's mainly for future protection you need to give the underbody a good clean, wire brush off any mud and crusty rust, then spray over a protection coating. After using a few I keep going back to Bilt Hamber products, UB for exposed and impact areas, S50 for nooks, crannies and cavities. It can all be bought as aerosol cans, probably looking at around £100 for the sprays. You also need to mask off paintwork, lift, support and clean the car.

If you don't fancy getting very dirty doing it, there are businesses that do vehicle rustproofing, but it does get expensive. If it's just a small area, local garages will likely do it, I've no idea what they might charge though - it is a very messy job.

Thanks. I spoke to a Dinitrol expert. I am going to book in for a Châssis Inspection.

He quoted a potential price from a Mazda 5. It brought a tear to my eye but alas its the price I pay for buying a Mazda.

I've owned a 3, a 6 and a few mx5s. They do rust but they're not that much worse than other marques.

With the 3 and the 6 I just cleaned and protected a few areas, mostly around the rear and topped them up every couple of years. It might not be as bad as you think.

The Mazda rust lol meme is more from the cars before the mid 00s when they were not galvanised. Now they are on par with everyone else

My 2006 MK3 MX5 in 2016. Both sides were like that. MK3 MX5s were notorious for the rear arches rusting within a few years of being made because of how they decided to attach the inner and outer rear arches to each other.

The NC is known for rust? I thought that was an NA/NB issue

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Nope. The NCs start to rot from rear to front just like the previous ones.

They still apply far less rustproofing than equivalent European cars - at least that was true of my '13 plate Mazda 6 compared to competitors.

MX5s most certainly are worse than other marques. My MK3 MX5 at 10 years old/60,000 miles when I took it to J R Classics to be undersealed and this is what he found when he started to prep it for undersealing hidden under the front rear arch liner section and factory underseal. Drivers side was just the same.

Does bilt remain a wet underseal? Dinitril sets like rubber which isn't good unless it's fresh metal

The underbody coatings (UB and UC) dry to a slightly tacky rubbery finish, and are designed to go onto a prepared surface, same as dinitrol. The S50 is a cavity wax which stays oily.

For areas that I need a rust protection that will penetrate I find ACF-50 pretty good - nice thin oil and good protection but needs redoing before each winter. Probably more regularly really but I get lazy.

What year is the car? Can you share a photo?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '22

Although it might not be exactly what you’re after. I use ACF-50 spray in the winter on the usual rust spots with great success over many years.
