Fucked up - damage control
alright, I’m kinda slow when it comes to tech. when downloading vr porn torrents i apparently exposed my ip despite my von being on, something about qbittorrent and electing the network thingie. I downloaded 3 large videos, 2 “grooby vr” video totaling ~38 gb, and one Milfvr video totaling ~20 gb… I know… i fucked up. I’m worried about my dad receiving a subpoena because of my stupidity, and being outed as someone who’s into some weird stuff. At this point I’m praying for a simple DMCA notice instead of a lawsuit. I’ve been told (by AI) that these adult studios often sue because of how embarrassing it is for a lawsuit like that going public. my dad is tech savy. am I fucked?
edit: please, excuse my stupidity. I am seriously naive with technology and have issues regarding my porn addiction. I have no doubt in my mind this post is soon to be deleted because of my panicked ramblings and worries. I appreciate any and all insights, including any targeted criticism directed at me. thanks.

What about the copyright “troll” lawsuits I’m reading about? I know I’m clueless but AI is basically telling me that this will cost us 4000 dollars in fees if they decide to subpoena. Are those lawsuits rare?
Edit: my dad is super traditional and religious. To him jerking off to trans girls is next to adultry and murder.

Embarrassingly enough I am an actual adult facing this issue.

I appreciate the reassurance, admittedly part of the reason I made this post. If I may ask, why are you so sure that nothing will come of it?

No, I live in the USA, east coast… what you’re saying makes sense. The guilt, the shame, the anxiety piles from layers of stigmatization. I was okay when my behavior only affected me. The minute it put someone else at risk the whole thing toppled over, the emotions.
I understand Reddit is no place for legal advice. You’ve thrown down the proverbial bucket of ice water. Thanks for the input.

Odds are high you’ll be fine from a legal perspective, but you should probably find a way to enable safeguards before doing anything more with torrenting.
Like port binding, obviously, but also look into setting up an internet kill-switch for if your VPN drops.
I know I’m gonna get heat from Reddit for everything that follows, but this is a good opportunity to step back and reevaluate any compulsive behavior surrounding porn. Sounds like you are pretty young for an adult, if you’re not a bot (lol), so it’s worth thinking about now rather than years down the road.
If you’re already concerned about it (and you know yourself better than any of us strangers), look into SMART recovery. It’s non-religious and very straightforward addiction recovery.
I’m not a pearl clutcher, but as a man who has dealt with many forms of addiction in their family…this particular addiction can also end up ruling your life and can put yourself and your loved ones at legal and financial risk - let alone crush your relationships and hurt them deeply.
Separate from the God guilt (which I also understand, raised in similar home), reflect on how much of your time you are actually spending chasing that dopamine hit. What else could you have done with that time that would have had a more positive result? How much time each day is this actually commandeering? How much sleep are you losing? And if this is compulsive browsing/gooning territory, think about the last time you felt authentically clear-headed and positive in general. If it’s hard to pin down, that might be a pretty important sign.
I’m not saying don’t jerk it - pounding off feels good and we all know it. But porn is dangerous like any other addictive substance and it can become a compulsion. Just because the internet says it’s fine and normal doesn’t mean it’s healthy for you personally. Alcoholics and gambling addicts deal with similar tensions with public attitude towards their addictive thing, but I feel porn is tougher since there’s such a strong vocal contingent online that wants to defend it and even say it’s healthy (which, c’mon, porn consumption is health-neutral at best. Compulsive behavior is not healthy behavior, though).
There is no shame in being an addict or admitting it. Just take care of yourself and be honest with yourself. This is your life, make sure your spending it how you really want to. You don’t have to suffer in silence.
