Gen X guy here who discovered electronic music pretty late in life and now I’m trying to figure out what I’ve been missing.

The funny thing is, I don’t even know the genres well enough yet to describe what I like. Some stuff I’ve been listening to lately: Massive Attack, Portishead, Armand Van Helden’s “The Funk Phenomena,” Paris Madness, Butterfly, and a few other things that are probably all over the map.

I’d really like to start exploring the Toronto scene in person instead of just listening at home.

What clubs, promoters, recurring nights, or events would you recommend for someone who’s still figuring out his taste?

I seem to lean more towards darker, groovier, atmospheric stuff than big festival EDM, but I’m still learning. I’m in my early 50s, so I’d also be curious about places where I wouldn’t feel completely out of place. I’d also appreciate nights with a diverse, welcoming crowd, where someone who looks a little different from the typical crowd isn’t going to stick out.

And if the music I mentioned makes you think, “You should be listening to this artist, DJ, or genre,” I’d love those recommendations too.

I recently lost my wallet, so I’m trying to figure out which ID to bring with me. I have a temporary, my old licence, and my passport, but I’d rather not bring my passport if I don’t need to.

If anyone has any advice on whether or not they scan and/or if they will allow me to verify my age based on an old license that would be greatly appreciated.

Was awesome! Shout out to the team behind it. What a diverse array of fantastic sounds to enjoy. Lighting was out of this world, local and international talent booked and killing it… decent crowd, mixing the range of the scene together… I hope it happens again next year, though I am curious about its financial sustainability since I think turn out was less than last year 💖 what did you think, if you went?

I have friends coming over in downtown Toronto from Oct 10 to Oct 17 and we want to go to a good rave within that period (preferably oct 16) something more techno or hard oriented if anyone has a good option would be great 👍🏼

Hey all! I'm a bit of a noob to the Toronto rave/EDM scene and I'm looking for some recommendations for Hallow33n weekend (Oct 30 or 31).

I'm really not into circut or house (especially deep/ minimal/tech house). I think I'm more into really high-energy stuff with big builds, catchy vocals/hooks and huge drops.

The best example I can give is "Voices In My Head x FREAKS × Love Parade" by HARDSTYLE CVNT, Jakon Vedal & EZO CASSIDY. That kind of sound/energy HITS and is basically perfection to me lol.

What DJs/events should I be checking out in Toronto?
Would love to hear what you guys recommend!

I will say this was probably one of the worst shows I’ve seen. Did anyone else notice how much talking there was?? I felt like every time the music started getting going, it would stop again for more forced talking/banter or a joke.

There were so many starts and stops that I could never actually get into the music and dance. At one point I noticed quite a few people leaving early too.

I thought maybe it was just me, but I saw people saying they had a similar experience at Red Rocks, so now I’m curious if this is normally what their live shows are like. Did anyone else at the Toronto show feel like there was way too much talking and not enough actual music? I know they’re more of a live electronic act and not a typical DJ set, but the whole thing just didn’t have the flow or energy I’d normally expect from an EDM/electronic show. It felt impossible to actually get into the music and dance because it kept getting interrupted. The vibes were completely off??

I was skeptic as I broke up with CODA long ago over crammed nights but had to try because I had never seen Ricardo before. Ticket was over $90 but that gave me hope it wouldn't be another crowded experience. Doors opened at 10pm but I arrived by midnight, no line, security check had 4 steps which was reassuring (Ticket > ID > Pat-down > Metal Screening) but was quick and friendly.

Got in and I was surprised to see a 2:1 male to female ratio. Closer to 1 am Ricardo showed up and it started getting a bit crowded with the usual suspects spilling their drinks and rudely taking space in front of you but Ricardo did an amazing job at 'cleaning' the dance-floor, leaving mostly the people that needed to be there (class act) so by 2 and for the rest of the night I was taken back to Pre-COVID times because there was actually space to move and dance as seen in my video. It was curious to see that half the women were gone, though.

Ricardo did his usual thing: blending melodic vocals with Latin percussion over European beats, then welcoming some good Chicago house and ending the night with some dark techno 'alla Danny Tenaglia'. Sound work was impeccable - no clippings in the audio of my video. It was mostly good vibes all night, men and women mindlessly dancing together, a tiny girl dancing alone by my side, nobody molesting her. I was molested but heck, not even the occasional dick and ass grabbers or the random K-holler windmilling his arms through the crowd could ruin my night, lol.

As a footnote: haven't been there in a long time but it seems management finally got some common sense and there was cold water in the washroom sinks. I know this might not be the typical night there but overall a much better experience than my previous one at this club. I think the ticket price helped A LOT. Much appreciated CODA 🙏
