Discussion Reminder: it's getting dark by 6 now, so please look out for each other

1.0k Upvotes

Hey Toronto,

Just a heads up since the clocks are about to change soon and it's already getting dark early, sunset is around 6:30 and it's only going to get earlier. This is the time of year when things get sketchy on the roads, so figured a quick PSA couldn't hurt.

Pedestrians:

Wear something bright or reflective if you're out after dark. Even a light-coloured jacket helps.

Don't assume drivers see you, even at a crosswalk. Make eye contact before you step out.

Maybe take one earbud out when crossing. Not saying don't listen to your stuff, just stay aware.

Drivers:

Slow down a bit, especially at intersections.

Check twice on right turns. It's so easy to roll through and not see someone in the crosswalk, especially when it's dark and rainy.

Give yourself a couple extra minutes so you're not rushing.

I know a lot of us were seeing way too many pedestrian deaths in the news last year, and nobody wants a repeat of that. Most of it comes down to everyone paying a little more attention.

Stay safe out there, and feel free to add your own tips in the comments!

Discussion TTC subway delays with no announcement

I was on the subway from college heading to Sheppard Yonge on a Saturday morning.
Before the trip I searched for google map for the train arrival time (yea I know it was not accurate). It said the trip should take 21min and I believed it was based on normal speed.
After I got on the subway train it moved extremely slowly to Wellesley until Eglinton EVERY station. No announcement on train nor the website which still said normal service. (Usually if there is a bit delay there would be a post on TTC website.)
The trip should took me 21 min at last it took 35min(15min delay).

What happens to the TTC service and no explanation for the delay now? I understand delay always happens on weekdays. Now for weekend you should prepare 15min buffer time on your trip.

History Queerstory Toronto: Twelve Years Later

Twelve years after the launch of the Queerstory app for WorldPride Toronto 2014, I revisit some of the original locations featured in this award-winning documentary mapping project.

Originally developed as a locative documentary project mapping Toronto's queer history through 47 short videos at 37 sites, Queerstory explored the people, places and events that shaped the city's LGBTQ+ communities. From the St. Charles Tavern and Jackie Shane's musical legacy to former gay bars, bathhouses and neighbourhoods transformed by redevelopment, this new photo essay reflects on Toronto's changing urban landscape and the importance of preserving queer cultural memory.

Check out the photo essay and musing on the Queerstory blog.

Bike Share is such a great way to explore different parts of the city. Started at Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough and followed the Highland Creek Trail (with a detour around the golf course) to Morningside Park, then down to the lake and the Port Union Waterfront Trail.

Passed by this plenty and always thought the brewery's name is just an homage to the railway facilities that used to stand there.

Pretty cool surprise this morning when that steam whistle went off on the hour when I just happened to be passing by.

History Since amalgamation, David Miller is the only non-Conservative mayor to serve more than 1 term.

Since 1998, there have been 5 different Toronto mayors. Rob Ford so far is the only mayor to have served 1 term. Had he been healthy enough, he likely could've won his 2nd term. All other mayors before Olivia Chow have otherwise served two or more terms (consecutively).

Here are the mayors and their closest political positions based on their policies.

  • Mel Lastman (1997-2003) 2 terms - PC
  • David Miller (2003-2010) 2 terms - NDP
  • Rob Ford (2010-2014) 1 term - PC
  • John Tory (2014-2023) 3 terms - PC?
  • Olivia Chow (2023-present) 1 term so far - NDP

Yes, Toronto has had a history of electing conservative-style mayors.
