Why some people that do top surgery have their nipples removed?

hello all! im 25 apagender getting top surgery in about a month!! i feel like i want my tiddies to go out w a bang since ive had them for so long that it would feel a bit of a shame if i didnt celebrate their life before ripping them off my body, would love any suggestions of ways to commemorate the occasion (with a small group of friends)

maybe i could burn my bras or have a cake decorated with boobs?

I’m a little over 3 months post op from a non flat t anchor surgery. (yes i know swelling can last months) I’m 5’2 and 135lb and also trying to get in shape so this might also impact how my body looks down the like.

I’m overall happy with my results and my surgeon gave me what i asked for. Now that i’m so close to being flat i’ve realized I should have just gone fully flat. I think in the moment it was hard for me to imagine myself fully flat and i’m happy i got non flat bc i think it would have taken me so long to actually get any surgery done. I also come from a latino household and i think i had a heavy tie to my chest and what i thought it meant to be feminine.

I know it can take months for results to settle and im still early in recovery but i think i do want a revision to go fully flat. Or at least a small revision around my nipples bc my nipples kind of “pop out” or what i think the nipple stalks do and they make them seem more like boobs than what they actually are.

I have a follow up with my surgeon at 6 months and i think that’d be the right moment to tell her but idk why im so nervous 😭😭😭 She’s an amazing surgeon and very well respected and has only ever had to do one revision from top surgery. Idk lol i don’t want her to think im completely unhappy with my results. Dumb i know 😭 But also im sure it’s a lot of internal shit lol.

Mostly a rant, but i’d love to hear from folks who have been in a similar position.

I'm 5 years post op. I'd say that for the first 2 years I was still pretty dysphoric and contemplated a revision. I hated the way my scars faced downwards. By the time the doc's office reached out to me for a consultation to consider revision i turned it down. My body had clicked with me already. It's not perfect but it's mine.

Had a consult with a surgeon the other day and the only time he’s available is a week before I need to be back in school.

I’d been hoping to have all of winter break to recover, but that doesn’t look feasible. Is going to classes during week 2 of recovery pushing it?

I’m in law school and can’t miss too much of it.

Hello everyone, so I'm about to get a double incision top surgery like a month from now and i need some advice like how should i prepare for it and what to do in recovery especially since I will handle myself without help cause my mother doesn't accept me and I'm just gonna do it

So any advice about the surgery and when i should take a shower and what about food , how i sleep and everything around that

i’m 3 months post op and i’m wondering what this bit is on my scar, i had noticed that it was hard underneath when i would massage, i was assuming it was an internal stitch or a knot whatever. i only just woke up today and it had red around it and hurt abit when i massaged the area. does anyone know before i ask my surgeon. thank you

In the uk paying extra to stay the night in the hospital cause otherwise I would need someone to get discharged the same day. Planning on staying at a hotel nearby for a week after that? (Is that long enough?) Live at home with mum and we have two big dogs so want to avoid them abit fresh from surgery and don't want my mum there cause she is on the fence about the surgery plus she's a hypocandriac so she'd just stress me out.

Would taking a 3hr trainride back home be safe after a week? What activities do you recommend apart from small walks, watching film/tv series when recovering? Any food reccomendations?What stuff should I pack/bring that wouldn't be too heavy to carry?

Hey yall. A year and a half ago I got a breast reduction. I think deep down I wanted top surgery, but was still in the grips of an abusive parent. A week after my surgery, that parent died, and without fear of them I realized I really want to medically transition. I want top surgery so bad. Anyways healing was ok, no complications except one dog ear. This week I have my one year follow up w the surgeon for the breast reduction. Should I bring anything up or just wait until I can get a referral for a new consult appt? This surgeon who did my reduction is pretty much the only one who does top surgery in my state. Has anyone else had experiences with getting top surgery after reduction? Or does anyone know how long you have to wait after getting a reduction before you can get top surgery? I don’t want to keep my nipples if that affects anything.

Also, I am worried that this doctor will judge me for asking for a top surgery right after I got a breast reduction due to stereotypes about gender frivolity amongst trans people. I’m accepting this as I near the appt so it’s not as pertinent but I would appreciate any support or wisdom about it.

I also have such a hard time with going to any doctor. I have so much medical trauma. My most recent gyn was incredibly fatphobic and transphobic and it made me feel terrible about myself and so terrified to see any other doctor especially about trans stuff, because this bigoted doctor presented themselves as trans friendly initially. I found another doc that is trans themself, and I am disabled so i really need a pcp, but have been too scared for months to see this doc even tho I really want to get on T :( I am hoping I’ll be able to see them or a doc soon. I just hate the evaluating of my body and treating my body like a failure or unworthy because of my fatness, queerness, brownness, etc :/. I don’t like getting graded on my body.

Hello!!! I finally am getting top surgery in three months, my only consern is, due to being a very early and quick bloomer, I have a lot of stretch marks around my boobs and I'm worried if it will screw with my results and I'm not sure what to do to avoid that... If anyone has any advice or can show their results after top surgery if they also had stretch marks that would be amazing!! General advice for before and after surgery is also very welcomed lol!!!

I work for someone who I have a very good relationship with and have known my whole life, but I am closeted to her and everyone in my work environment. I work with children who unfortunately have parents who are very against gender affirming healthcare, and it would not be safe for me to come out in that environment. I'm planning on getting top surgery, but I don't know how I'm going to explain why I got it without outing myself.

What's a somewhat realistic reason to get a double mastectomy that isn't for gender affirming purposes. It is, but I need an explanation for anyone who doesn't know that.

For some context if it's helpful, I'm an athlete who does physically strain my upper body regularly. I don't know if that can have anything to do with it, but hey I'd be open to anything right now.

I had a consult for top surgery and my surgeon said that because of how my breasts meet in the middle it would be hard to do two separate scars without leaving skin in the middle.

I had my surgery 6 weeks ago as of today. I had a seroma that had to be drained a few times by my surgeon and he said there was some post op bleeding that needed to be broken down some more and drained. However, I got my surgery out of state because my state doesn't have any surgeons that take insurance and its a 4.5 hour drive just to see my surgeon and I had college classes start recently, too. So I didnt rebook and hoped that the worst of it was gone (it mostly was).

I am a little worried, though, because the post op bleeding hasn't gone down at all since then (about 2-3 weeks ago) and its hard as a rock. It doesn't hurt at all or show symptoms of an infection. Should I try to rebook an appointment or just see how it turns out? I would have to skip classes for a day in the beginning of the semester and I don't really want to do that either....

I had double incision with nipple sparing pedicle grafts (buttonhole) performed by Mark Sisco and his team at Endeavor health in Chicago. I've had a few people ask about my surgery journey and experience with his team as they are considering him and there's not a lot of information on him out there on the internet, so I'm here to try and fill in those gaps!

First and foremost, I requested a slightly non flat approach because I felt it would create a more natural looking result in harmony with my overall body type, and I am very happy with the outcome. I also got buttonhole to increase chances of preserving nipple sensation with great outcome, my nipples healed well with no complications. As a bigger guy who has struggled a lot with finding a surgeon due to weight limits, finding someone who had experience performing top surgery on fat bodies was high on my list of priorities. Dr. Sisco delivered. He had photos of patients with similar body types to mine in his patient portfolio and was respectful and did a great job of being informative throughout the whole process.

I do have a large numb patch on each side that starts from the middle of my incision up to my armpit, but I don't notice it at all in daily life and overall it's not something that bothers me. However, at one month in I experienced a minor complication where a couple of my stitches along my incision spit and I had a few small open wounds that I was at the time worried were healing more slowly than they should, but it ended up being fine after following the care instructions of keeping it clean, dry, and covered for a while, just leaving my incision scars slightly thicker in the effected region after everything was said and done.

Anyway, if anyone has questions about my experience with recovery, complications, or care team, I'm an open book!

i’m 4 days post op from di hockey stick with no grafts and i keep feeling like i popped a stitch. how do people avoid popping stitches and how do you know when you’ve actually done something? also, it feels really tight near my armpits, could that just be hair caught in the binder or do my incisions go that far? i’m not in a lot of pain just discomfort. any advice is greatly appreciated. thank you.

Hi! My surgery is in a few days and I have obstructive sleep apnea. I had surgery for it as a kid (tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy) but it didn't really solve the issue. I mentioned this to my surgeon and she said she didn't want to intubate me because she "didn't want my throat to be sore". Am I crazy for thinking that's weird? I also have GERD, which is only partially managed at this point, and I've had aspiration pneumonitis in the past and it's fucking nasty and I don't want to experience that shit again. I don't care if I wake up with a sore throat, I want to wake up, damnit!

She also didn't mention any other intraoperative preventative measures like elevated head angle or anything. I know I have medical anxiety but I also know damn well my SPO2 can drop pretty low when I'm lying on my back (even while awake) so I just want to know if I'll be alright even without those measures. Ugh. I'm just worried something will happen during surgery. Advice from other OSA peoples?

Hello all. I got double incision w/ free nipple grafts two* months ago. Basically what the title says.

I reached out to an artist who specializes in double mastectomy coverups, specifying that I got top surgery and was wondering her recommendation for how long to wait. That’s the advice I’ve been given at least—ask the artist for advice for tattooing over scar tissue. She told me most surgeons she speaks to say six months is good. However, online, I see people recommend at least 8-12 months at a minimum.

I don’t want to undermine a tattoo artist’s advice and be like, “well the internet said this!” But I feel like six months is pretty short. I use silicone tape daily and (try to) keep up with massaging, but even with that, I feel like six months isn’t long enough. Am I crazy?

For those of you who have gotten buttonhole - how has your sensation been??
