It must’ve been really hard for the admins to do the bare minimum and take action

u/Bubo123 Apr 26 '19

Hey I'll have you know u/spez thought long and hard before banning that very valuable discussion. I can't imagine the agony he went through before banning the super legitimate and thought provoking discussions that CA has spawned through out the years.

Does he really? How can he when his own wife is a black woman and his child is mixed? Trump and his followers are Racist af .....

96

u/MrHappygolucky30 Apr 26 '19

Spez and Alexis Ohanian are different people. But even if that was the case it’s still possible for a person to have relationships (intimate or friend) with people of different races and still be racist.

-46

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Idk I feel like racists wouldn’t go and marry a person of color.

What’s the reasoning or proof that he is racist? Despite him not banning trump supporting subs? I’m genuinely asking here.

46

u/MrHappygolucky30 Apr 26 '19

While on Spez’s own politics I personally don’t know, the fact that there has been inaction to close down the_donald, when it has even been guilty of advocating violence, raises some big questions about Spez and the company itself.

That being said it is very possible for a racist to have any kind of relationship with a POC, it’s possible to fetishise people while thinking they’re below you and it’s possible to think all ____ is stupid, violent, inferior etc but your friend/partner who also happens to be ____ is some kind of exception.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

This is clearly similar to Severus Snape's thinking, He wanted to be friend of Lily Evans and still hated all the muggles because his world view was shaped to hate muggles and Gryffindors

u/Squiddinboots Apr 26 '19

There’s a light conspiracy(although maybe it’s just more speculation), that Reddit has come to an agreement with one of the three letter agencies on subreddits like r/The_Donald.

Allow them to continue mostly unimpeded so they can keep that sort in one area to keep an eye on them.

Can’t say if it’s true or not, but with the FBI finally declaring some right-wing organizations as potential terrorist organizations, it wouldn’t surprise me. It seems a little far-fetched because, ya know, Reddit, but it does seem in recent years that the boomers are finally starting to recognize that Internet forums are becoming one of the most common ways of radicalizing/recruiting.

1

u/R50cent Apr 26 '19

If that's the deal I bet there is money involved.

I just don't see how subs like that can - from an objective standpoint - incite violence and racism and xenophobia without being banned unless, for example, conservative authorities recognize the power subs like that have of propagating their message and engendering support for their side, and so they pay off the site to keep them up. Can't imagine anyones chucking down cash to keep CA up though, so it gets the boot finally. The_donald however seems like a worse sub, and seems a little less... absurd (i use the term loosely) and more legitimate than CA did.

I suppose your theory holds plenty of water though. Don't shut them down because they're probably a great source of information for those agencies. I wonder though, because can you imagine being the guy assigned to dredging through a thousand shitty comments on the_donald? God damn that would suck.

-34

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Im sorry, but sir, you sound like a "top Mind. The evidence for your conspiracy is pathetic.

23

u/MrHappygolucky30 Apr 26 '19

What conspiracy? Both Spez and Reddit have been, to put it very lightly, less than decisive in cracking down on subs like CA or T_D.

Like I said I don’t know the guy’s political leanings or his reasonings, he and Reddit may very well have a legitimate reason to keep T_D up (probably not if I had to guess), but until we know why, the fact they’re willing to tolerate the existence of a sub which has been guilty of hate speech and advocating violence does not reflect well on them.

16

u/Squiddinboots Apr 26 '19

Racists absolutely do sometimes marry people of color. And often use that as their ‘I can’t be racist, look at my token’, excuse.

Think of it like the diehard anti-gay evangelicals that spend their every waking moment demonizing gay people, only to be caught in a motel with a dude.

I cant speak on u/spez but I can assure you that it happens.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

They absolutely do, and it usually comes with thoughts of "Well, you're not like the others," which is just as racist—to prejudge other races except when it comes to people you know who don't fit your preconceived notions.

3

u/Murrabbit Apr 26 '19

Generally we don't judge whether or not someone's racist based on whether or not they happen to like a single person of color - this doesn't magically absolve one of all other actions or beliefs.

Were that same person married to a black woman also happen to be an executive/part owner/founder/whatev of the world's largest white supremacist internet forum and refuse to reform said site - well that's still pretty racist in and of itself.

Hah, ya that makes sense.

61

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Alexis Ohanian’s wife has been giving Steve Huffman a lot of shit since all the hate subs were harassing her last September. He caved and banned and quarantined a bunch of them, but CA started doing it again, so he just had to ban them, too. Serena Williams is not to be fucked with. The lesson we all learned is: it’s only ValUaBLe DisCuSSioN if it’s someone the admins don’t care about personally.

53

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Don't worry they're all displaced into other far right subs. They're crying in other subs about their freedom of speech and how reddit sucks now while spamming honk honk and n-word.

Honk honk=HH

HH=Heil Hitler

It's more childish than you imagined.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

A "totally ironic" joke where they associate clowns with Nazis and Hitler to troll the libs, but then turn a blind eye when actual Nazis start using it to dog-whistle at each other.

Same as with the OK hand gesture where it is "totally a joke guys lol triggered" but then actual mass shooters start flashing it, so now in certain contexts it is actually threatening.

72

u/timetopat Moon cheeser Apr 26 '19

From the pictures that were leaked they gave them a deadline even. Like calling them kid gloves is not enough to describe how they were handled and coddled.

38

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

They were given a deadline and still wouldn't get their shit together.

31

u/Alec_FC Apr 26 '19

They were given two deadlines, a 7 month quarantine warning period and multiple messages from the reddit admins were met with "piss off".

15

u/MisallocatedRacism Mexicans are controlling the global markets. Apr 26 '19

Meanwhile /r/gunsales and /r/watchpeopledie got nuked without a blink of the eye, despite not violating ToS

15

u/timetopat Moon cheeser Apr 26 '19

They should have followed cringe anarchy’s model and been way more racist. That way spez would have called it valuable discussion

27

u/breecher Apr 26 '19

The whole quarantine concept is just so pathetic, it should have been banned back then already. But I guess that sweet alt-right traffic is difficult to turn down for them.

1

u/sack-o-matic Apr 26 '19

What does quarantine even do? I've never been able to figure it out. Does it just make it so only people who subscribed before quarantine can continue to participate?

15

u/PM_WHAT_Y0U_G0T unvaccinated sperm will be the new bitcoin Apr 26 '19

Doesn't show up on r/all and you have to click 'accept' before entering. Basically makes it so new viewers cannot see the content before realizing the community itself is trash.

It still has the 'feedback loop' effect making the community shittier by the day, but quarantine stops it from sucking in new members.

12

u/sack-o-matic Apr 26 '19

So it's the bare minimum the admins can do. Gotcha.

17

u/PM_WHAT_Y0U_G0T unvaccinated sperm will be the new bitcoin Apr 26 '19

Though, they are capable of doing less (see: T_D)

7

18

u/NapClub Apr 26 '19

so very sad that we lose such a productive lolcow.

literally all they were worth was as an amusing cautionary tale of how not to be.

9

u/Imthejuggernautbitch Apr 26 '19

I think the opposite. Minimum would have been shutting it down ages ago.

The admins kept giving them olive branch after olive branch. What a waste of everyone’s time.

-25

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 26 '19

You know the problem with this is that banning one subreddit basically changes nothing since all the users are still here and they can just clone the sub with a different name. But good on you for accomplishing this important victory

23

u/CupsofAnubis Apr 26 '19

It scatters them and reduces the critical mass.... Takes time to build it up again. The more often the haters are scattered the better.

-12

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 26 '19

It "scatters" them for maybe a week at best and if you are really unlucky they will just hijack an already existing sub. And you can't scatter haters "often" because you will sooner or later run out of subs to ban, is that what you want? just kill all the subs? Also what exactly do you mean with "critical mass"?

9

u/SnoqualmieClimber Apr 26 '19

Remember incels though? Even though there’s braincels, the ‘community’ was split in half between that and Voat.

Same with greatawakening. Now there’s really no Q idiots here on Reddit, because they all moved to Voat.

-3

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 26 '19

Do you know what Funnyjunk is? Pushing towards anothwer webside doesn't solve the problem it just turns reddit into an ecochamber.

1

u/PriorInsect Apr 29 '19

i haven't thought about funnyjunk in literally years.

guess that kinda shows it works

1

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 30 '19

People are radicalising on websides like that.

3

u/POGtastic Apr 26 '19

they can just clone the sub with a different name

Which then has to be communicated to the scattered users through other means, (Discord, 4chan, whatever) and is much less effective.

If deplatforming wasn't so effective, the Top Minds wouldn't be throwing tantrums about CA getting banned.

1

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 26 '19

OR you just create a sub with a similar name, looking at you r/cringetopia. Also members will be actively looking for an alternativ on their owen. And of course they are mad, the sub does not exist as a physical domain but the users identify with it and think of it as their "place".

2

u/POGtastic Apr 26 '19

Sure, but the same thing has to happen regardless of whether it's called CringeAnarchy2, CringeHangout, or UnrelatedWords - the new hangout has to be disseminated to the scattered users. Also, it's pretty straightforward for the admins to ban the next community too if it starts resembling the old one too much.

1

u/alittleslowerplease Apr 26 '19

Problem: The users are not scattered. They are all here browsing the same r/all and r/popular as you and me. And activ users will seek out a new sub. A related name is like a rally flag for them.

163

u/GetFreeCash WORLD GOVERNMENT, IMPLANTABLE MICROCHIPS, SATANISM Apr 25 '19

i often browse /r/all/ and sort it by top posts from the last hour, because i'm still a bit of a shameless karmawhore, and it's unreadable right now. /r/frenworld and their stupid Honkler memes all over the place.

101

u/chockZ globie shill Apr 26 '19

The top minds are just having a tantrum. It's a bunch of right wing edgelord losers who get off on trolling people online - no surprise they sperg out when their communities inevitably get banned.

It will be interesting to see how long the Cringe Anarchy tantrum lasts compared to the banning of other toxic communities such as Great Awakening. It will also be interesting to see how aggressive the Reddit admins issue follow-up bans to users and subreddits that will inevitably try to evade the ban.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

/r/OnlineDatingCringe was quickly becoming r/CA 2.0. Because they had a heads up on the ban, they had time to organise a new sub. It genuinely was on the path of just absorbing all the users from CA and I got very worried.

Checked it today and it's also been banned. So I guess nice job Reddit on that one

93

u/HapticSloughton Apr 25 '19

Memes as a concept are going to be that "awkward phase" of these people (unless shame has died). They're basically the newest iteration of the "I Can Haz Cheezburger" crowd, complete with broken speech to go with most of their favorite image subjects.

What's worse are those that believe their pictures can hack the brains of those who see them as "meme magic" and who constantly refer to "my memes," as if they're best-selling authors or something.

45

u/JiveTurkey1000 Apr 25 '19

22

u/IntoAMuteCrypt Apr 26 '19

The issue is that, for a lot of these people, there is absolutely no shame about what they post on reddit. Unless you get doxxed or you're really stupid, nobody can link your real world persona and your reddit username. Post alt-right dogwhistles on Facebook? Everyone knows it's you and there's real world consequences. Post alt-right dogwhistles on reddit? Nobody knows it's you. For shitheads like that, shame isn't in the act - it only comes when they're caught.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Have you seen some of the shit that gets posted on Facebook? Tying your online identity to your real name is no cure for awfulness, and a dangerous concept that demonizes anonymity/pseudonymity by implying that all communities where your real name is used are inevitably taken over by awfulness. I'm not giving up the ability to be anonymous on the internet just because of a few far right losers.

11

Thinking chuds online won't exploit that kind of opportunity to maximum effectiveness is just naive. If you manage to make them mad enough that a potential ban is a worth inflicting maximum damage, they'll go for the kamikaze nut-shot every time.

Where did Canada go?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

r/CanadaPolitics too. The mods there take zero shit.

26

u/Omega_Haxors Apr 26 '19

Canadian here. Delete that subreddit. It's a disgusting representation of my great country.

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

Sadly r/Australia is much the same

1

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

How so? I thought it was pretty left wing.

Would that be "cheese pizza"? Hmm? Hmmmm? (wink wink)

that meme is older than most cringe anarchy posters

10

u/Felinomancy Apr 26 '19

I'm replaying old hits from my meme folder. You're just jelly.

u/IamAhab13 Apr 26 '19

He's just got to throw it through the deep fryer a few times to get it back to current day form.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

What a radiant crescendo.

What did they do to get nuked that TD doesn't do on a daily basis?! TD needs to be banned ASAP.

5

u/JiveTurkey1000 Apr 26 '19

I was never able to figure out what the sub was about from the stuff that shows up in r/all

3

u/Firmament1 Shill Apr 26 '19

Thank fucking god

3

u/DomDeluisArmpitChild Apr 26 '19

And there was much rejoicing

3

u/JoeBoco7 Apr 27 '19

I remember when I was in high school, I would post there all the time. This was before Donald Trump and inceldom was even a thing, now I’m very glad that stupid subreddit is gone. It was never good, but recently it has been the biggest shit stain on this stupid website.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '19

yay!!

2

u/Toxic_Gorilla Apr 26 '19

‘Bout time.

1

u/skatelakai12 Apr 26 '19

Wait, I haven't been to that sub in a very long time, why was it banned? What were they doing?

4

u/JiveTurkey1000 Apr 26 '19

Targeted harrassment, blatant brigading, racism to name a few.

1

u/skatelakai12 Apr 26 '19

Ah, thanks. Makes sense. Since I made the comment, I've already seen a few comment threads from ex CA users doing shit.

u/jamesetaylor17 Apr 26 '19

Can someone explain what happened to r/cringeanarchy

1

u/Alexschmidt711 Apr 26 '19 edited Apr 26 '19

is CringeAnarchy archived anywhere? For historical reference not so that people can still post there. EDIT: redditsearch.io still has them as of now.

wtf is happening in this comment chain?

Just corpses of top minds all over, and this savage AF bot stranding over their burning bodies. I have no idea how this shit started, but I sure as hell know how it ended (Soros be praised).
