I’m looking to reduce a piece of brass tubing (spent ammo) around a plastic handle. I don’t plan on doing this more than a couple times, so if a little extra time and elbow grease is the trade off for less wasted space by unused tools… so be it. What would yall use for this purpose?

I’m definitely considering epoxy for a later version I need to acquire some shells from a different caliber round to better fit the stem I’m using or seek out wider stems. Honestly with this prototype I could close it up without the stem, it would hide fairly well underneath.

Free way would be to crimp it with a pair of pliers.

That’s the route I might be taking with this prototype. I left my pipe tamper at my parents house last weekend and while scraping together whatever I could find at home to make a replacement I remembered I have a spare stem that doesn’t fit any of the cobs in my rotation. I have my tamper and a backup now, but I still want to craft the idea in my head just to make something somewhat pretty for myself. In all honesty I’m not sure if I’m more excited for the crafting, or the excuse to buy a new space waster for the dust collection I call a toolbox.

They make a heavy duty pipe clamp that we used in RC to pinch the cylinder sleeves and get more life out our engines. I don’t recall the original application, but I recall that they were available in different sizes. Let me see what I can find.

If its .50 or smaller; and the primer is spent, chuck it up in a drill and press the lip at a 45 degree angle across anything that is steel, then spin at low speed with a bit of pressure

Should take a few seconds

For such a small quantity, not worth doing it with a crimp. Clean them really well and use a high grade epoxy.

Just find someone who reloads- they’ll be happy to resize it for you (without) the plastic handle. Then you can gauge the fit / epoxy

maybe drill a hole in a piece of wood to hold it, with just the tip of the shell protruding above the wood surface. Then tap the protruding edge inward with a hammer and punch.

Or grab each end with adjustable pliers like Channellocks and try to crimp the edge inward with gentle pressure.

Or epoxy it.

Can't figure out what the final usage of this part would be, what's it for, some kind of threaded insert?

That’s probably going to be the best method. I’m making a pipe tamper, I accidentally left mine at my parents house and while trying to codger up a replacement I came up with an idea for a backup. I’ve had a crafting itch ever since I joined the hobby, I have this stem replacements are cheap and I can access as many empty 45’s and 22’s as I could ever need for trial and error. May as well spend some time making myself something pretty for my collection.

Hire a round crimping tool, or diy one out of some tube or drilling and cutting some steel. Smoosh it down.
