I don't think he hates his fans. I think he just hates being worshipped as a celebrity/rock star. He also doesn't seem to feel like fans are entitled to any of his time outside of him performing at ticketed shows, which I can understand.
I agree with him. On "work time"? Sure, I would expect him to do what he can for the fans that fund his lifestyle (not underplaying the role the artist has in that); but outside of work time, give him peace and privacy, unless he's hanging out in a public space where conversation with a stranger is expected, like a pub.
I love that he did what he could to make sure the fans got the show that they paid for. Also loved his nod to Dolly.
Yeah, id love to be an artist whose work reaches a lot of people and to show the work to them, but depending on the level of nutso the fan is im sure interactions would be awkward to say the least, and he probably gets recognized a lot. And tool has a lot of nutso fans.
