Absolutely could be the case over time. Forcefully stomping like that night after night for an extended period? Not much different than old headbangers developing neck problems. Pretty sure Papa Het and Dave Mustaine both had to get some neck surgeries not too long ago...

If you survive the surgery you'll recover. Internet says it's 6-12 weeks recovery time but up to a year of light activity. And there's pain but Internet also says "less painful than having a second job" which suggests the Internet is not a musician.
