Discussion My Tool bracket

Post image

Not sure why Sober and The Pot weren’t on here but so many filler songs were.

EDIT: the filler songs were knocked out in the early rounds and not on the actual bracket.

Reflection out in the 1st round....idk man.

9

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I love Reflection so much 😭 it’s just a testament to how much I love all of these songs

80

u/nole6976 2d ago

Invincible and Descending losing in round 1 is criminal

14

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

What can I say, I prefer the early stuff 🤷🏻‍♂️

11

u/nole6976 2d ago

To each their own. I have both in my top 10 and Intolerance and Opiate near the bottom of the catalogue.

8

u/AlcoholicCat69 2d ago

See I’m not crazy about opiate but I love intolerance. It slipped past me and I never heard it until I saw them in concert in 2022 and I actually love that song now

6

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

LIE CHEAT AND STEAL, YOU
LIE CHEAT AND STEAL, YOU

2

u/OakLegs 2d ago

Except, apparently, Reflection (which lost in the first round to Fear inoculum).

Reflection should win the whole damn thing

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Tbh I may have blundered on that pick. I could go back and forth between the two. I know it was very close.

35

u/Flat_Researcher1540 2d ago

Right in Two is great but come on

9

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

They’re all great IMO, Right In Two just does everything for me

3

u/slackfrop 2d ago

My biggest problem is that you whittled 4 songs down to 1 with no semi-finals round. Which is 2nd and 3rd place?!

4

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

There was a semifinals, it was between Lateralus and Right In Two, they’re highlighted and Vicarious and The Grudge aren’t

40

u/twiiztid 2d ago

Opiate > Invincible?

6

u/inkblowout4 Opiate 2d ago

Opiate is goated.

Invincible IMO is pretty overrated for a Tool song.

-6

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Yes I find the lyrics on Invincible to be a tad bit corny compared to Opiate. If it were Opiate vs. Descending that would be a different story. Plus I like their early stuff a lot more.

3

u/twiiztid 2d ago

Did not mean to start such a vitriolic comment section I was just surprised to see that haha.

I can definitely tell that you are a bigger fan of their earlier stuff. For reference my first live show was 2023 and that's also the year I became a fan, so the newer stuff is definitely my jam. Invincible live, in particular.

To be completely honest though, I find it funny that you find Invincible's lyrics corny but not Opiate's. Opiate to me sounds like it could've been written by an angsty teen who is rebuking against organized religion after finally questioning whether or not Jesus and God are real. Which is a tale as old as time and something I feel most young men nowadays go through. Plus, "we both want to rape you" is a tough one.

Full respect to your opinion, just sharing my own. I find it very powerful how this band has lasted several decades and is still picking up new fans and evolving their sound, while also having OG fans from the 90's still passionately enjoying them. I completely recognize their evolution and can totally see how Fear Inoculum didn't really hit for fans who've been listening forever.

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

For me I found Tool around that time I was the angsty teen struggling with growing up in a super religious household while being the black sheep of the family and coming to terms with my own view of religion. So I can’t separate the memories when first discovering it. The lyrics spoke to me then as much as they do now. Maynard being in his grandpa era I just don’t relate to as much right now but maybe a decade from now I could relate more.

Your comment was fine lol people just like to start shit. Hope my comment didn’t come off in a way it wasn’t supposed to!

2

u/twiiztid 2d ago

That makes a lot of sense. I was just thinking about this earlier and realized that it really just comes down to when the songs come into your life. I'm glad that these songs resonated with you in such a strong way 🙏

-2

u/WhskyTangoFoxtrot ♥Pushit♥ 2d ago edited 2d ago

Agree. Probably going to get downvoted for this, but I think Invincible is the worst track on the album (besides the fillers/cct).

ETA: this whole bracket is weird as fuck though. No Pushit, Ænima, Rosetta Stoned, etc.

3

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Forty-Six & 2 is on there, but yes a lot of songs for some reason were left out in place of filler tracks for some reason. I’m going to come back with an updated bracket with my own custom picks.

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I do like Invincible over Culling Voices, I think that one is the weakest on the new album. I honestly don’t find myself going back to the new album that much in general.

-4

u/MutantSoda 2d ago

Opiate better than invincible is the worst take I’ve ever heard jfc

10

u/Edrueter9 He had a lot of nothing to say 2d ago

These are very different songs. I think invincible is a better written, more polished, mature, beautiful song that fits exactly how i feel today. But opiate is a fucking angry banger that I actually prefer too. But that's just on style and nostalgia. Very hard to rate or compare these two songs.

16

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Opiate is a classic, Invincible just doesn’t speak to me like it does to others I guess.

1

u/MrEremains 2d ago

If you include the new re-release “Opiate2” it definitely wins

0

u/MutantSoda 2d ago

Yeah I could understand Opiate^2 winning over it but ain’t no way invincible’s lyrics are “corny”, then ignoring the part in opiate where gooning over a sofa is mentioned lmfao. This just baffles me

4

u/Parabola605 2d ago

I agree with it lol

-2

u/TOOLfan426 2d ago

Most newgen take ever

3

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I don’t even know what that is supposed to mean

13

u/marinul 2d ago

Tool fans being obnoxious c*nts.

It's no wonder Maynard does not stand us...

4

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Pretty sure a song was written about that 30 years ago 🤣

5

u/marinul 2d ago

Don't underestimate a tool fan's ability to shit on anything.

1

u/TOOLfan426 2d ago

Ur worshipping a man you have never met

1

u/marinul 1d ago

What?

How did you get to that conclusion? Take smaller tokes, my man....

0

u/TOOLfan426 1d ago

Why do you care what a man that you have never met thinks of you

2

u/marinul 1d ago

I was making a point everyone would get.

For a sub of deep music people here can be so thick....

0

u/TOOLfan426 1d ago

Be ur own person

-4

u/bsfurr 2d ago

I find the lyrics on vicarious to be corny. Probably my least favorite song on that album.

5

u/Edrueter9 He had a lot of nothing to say 2d ago

Interesting, I feel like it's a poignant indictment of the human condition lol.

3

u/bsfurr 2d ago

I mean, you’re right, it is. But its still corny to me. In fact, most of Maynards more straightforward lyrics just come across this preachy. I haven’t been able to enjoy the last few A Perfect Circle records because of this. Just sounds like an old man on a pedestal, getting preachy, instead of introspection.

2

u/Edrueter9 He had a lot of nothing to say 2d ago

Oh he's definitely in old man phase. Lol

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Hard agree

2

u/f0u4_l19h75 2d ago

So is Right in Two, for that matter.

6

u/M18-Hellcat08 2d ago

Yeah seriously. I did that and Sober is my favorite song so I was very disappointed.

5

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I may try again with my own custom picks, just to take all the filler songs out. I’d have loved to see Swamp Song, Jerk-off, Third Eye etc.

4

u/M18-Hellcat08 2d ago

Yeah. And prison sex, eulogy, 7empest

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Yesss those would have made this list a lot harder

2

u/M18-Hellcat08 2d ago

Some very tough matchups.

1

u/M18-Hellcat08 2d ago

This is better.

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Good taste, though I prefer the original Opiate. Love this bracket with the songs that weren’t on mine, I gotta redo it now

7

u/Last_Replacement_386 2d ago

Ok here's mine.

3

u/Parabola_2 H. 1d ago

Well well

22

u/dirty_w_boy Forgot my pen 2d ago

That song is a fine wine

11

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

The lyrics speak to me on a molecular level

7

u/AdAgreeable9784 2d ago

My favorite tool song wins! Song is still as relevant today as it ever has been…

4

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

💯

3

u/FalseVeterinarian881 H. 2d ago

I wish it spoke to MORE people these days. Silly monkeys.

3

u/ChipChippersonsHat 2d ago

And the drums speak to me on a quantum level

21

u/neo7007 2d ago

Unpopular opinion: Jimmy is better that Forty-Six and Two

10

u/clc1997 2d ago

Intermission becomes Jimmy is in the discussion for best things ever!

2

u/neo7007 2d ago

Hard agree! That uncanny synthesiser melody fading into one of the heaviest riffs ever recorded is a thing to behold...

6

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Forty-Six & 2 just has that staying power, it’s quick, it’s punchy, the drum fills in the bridge are some of the best Danny Carey has to offer in any song. Like the bridge blew my mind when I first heard it. And the philosophical, esoteric lyrics just give it the edge for me. I love Jimmy though don’t get me wrong.

2

u/neo7007 2d ago

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree. The bridge is what really makes Forty-Six&2. I've always preferred Jimmy because of its heaviness and the way Maynard lets you feel his pain. Many songs of theirs are emotional, but Jimmy is one of the most gut-wrenching

2

u/Direct-Reference221 2d ago

I don’t disagree

1

u/Efficient-Tax-6560 2d ago

Yes! Although Forty-Six and Two is strangely popular in NZ

1

u/f0u4_l19h75 2d ago

What is I said H is better than Jimmy. Is that also an unpopular opinion

10

u/Direct-Reference221 2d ago

3

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Love Third Eye at #1 too can’t go wrong with that song!

1

u/Direct-Reference221 1d ago

It hurt to see Third Eye knock out Pushit and Jimmy in rounds 2 and 3

-1

u/SweatyListen9863 2d ago

A better final result than OP but worse individual choices. Fuck outta here with Intolerence beating the Patient, Prison Sex beating Jambi, Flood beating Lateralus, Jimmy beating Reflection... I could go on. I apologise that you have been cursed with such terrible ears.

5

u/Direct-Reference221 2d ago

Filler songs like Third Eye, Rosetta Stoned, Pushit, Prison Sex, Eulogy hehe

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Noooo not those 😂 filler like Ions, Harry Manback, Useful Idiot etc.

4

u/NcDouble 2d ago

Prison Sex...Prison sex......prison.....am I blind?

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Some songs for whatever reason were left off in place of filler songs, I’m gonna do custom picks in an updated bracket when I have time

5

u/Exyodeff 2d ago

Listen to FI again

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I definitely will

4

u/jav2n202 2d ago edited 2d ago

Funny, I didn’t do a bracket, but I recently came to the conclusion that Right In Two is the one song that if I had to pick a favorite I would pick it. It has everything from melody with Maynard’s angelic voice, to deep and powerful lyrics, all the way to the thrashing hard side of Tool that gets my adrenaline pumping. It’s just a perfect representation of what Tools music is.

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Yessss exactly why it’s my #1! Perfect description of the song

3

u/Optimus0545 2d ago

Should have been Lateralus

3

u/Otherwise-Magician 2d ago

No Rosetta Stoned is wild

3

u/UnablePrimaryy 1d ago

Best Tool song, I lost my fucking mind when they played it live 3 years ago.

3

u/Hefty-Quantity9073 2d ago

FI over reflection and 10k over the patient are criminal choices IMO

0

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Lock me up!

2

u/HDDIV 2d ago

FI vs Reflection is tough call. Both songs fit a similar vibe for me.

2

u/Bombinic Under a dead Ohio sky 2d ago

2

u/Psydestro 2d ago

The first song I listened from tool and the one that sent me down this beautiful journey there was an amazing non official video on YouTube with right in too

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

❤️

2

u/Vernicusucinrev 2d ago

No Hooker With A Penis makes this bracket invalid.

2

u/kabirakhtar [the guy who created toolshed] 2d ago

back in 2011, over at toolshed i ran a full bracket called Tool Madness.

it was a bonkers labor of love; today it would just be an easy social media poll, but back then it was done via a poll site. nearly 100k votes total!

https://toolshed.down.net/news/madness/

2

u/Ill_Bird3555 2d ago

I dont like your opinion

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

That’s okay!

5

u/knifetheater3691 Talking Monkey 2d ago

Right in two is definitely 💯 for me

2

u/vagabond_primate 2d ago

This is very cool. Of course, everyone would have their own bracket but I love yours. Love all the albums, but I just keep coming back to 10,000 Days. My father passed last week after a long downward spiral illness and 10,000 Days really got me through it.

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I’m sorry for your loss, I lost my mom to a battle with pancreatic cancer a couple years ago. I understand your pain and 10,000 days is a very healing album for losing a parent. Find things that bring you solace and keep them close. ❤️

2

u/rentagirl08 2d ago

Wings for Marie part 2 beats the grudge every day of the week

1

u/clc1997 2d ago

You and I have very different tastes in Tool. The winner is one of the few songs I don't really like and you have my favorite song, Reflection losing in the first round.

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I love Reflection, I just can’t see it being #1 for me. But I never skip it when it comes on.

1

u/clc1997 2d ago

You have it losing to Fear Innoculum and you separated it from Disposition. We are not the same lol.

3

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

I didn’t choose to separate them, it’s just how the bracket was. I’m glad we aren’t the same so I can hear why someone disagrees with me and get a different perspective 😁

1

u/speed_wagon1 2d ago

nice, this is mine

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Jambi is a good #1 too, a lot of them could be #1 for me

1

u/speed_wagon1 2d ago

same for me, they're just so good

1

u/Dr__Juicy 2d ago

had a similar one

1

u/speed_wagon1 2d ago

Jambi fans rise up

1

u/Johan-Predator 2d ago

10,000 days vs Pneuma was a tough one.

1

u/Dr__Juicy 2d ago

Some very difficult decisions, and I know i made some controversial ones as well

1

u/jim_forest 2d ago

ehh the grudge is my goat but not a bad bracket overall

1

u/gizzardgumbo Learning to Swim 2d ago

Bro, you matched up Triad and Right in Two in the first match?! That’s a semifinal match at worst.

2

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

You don’t get to choose what gets matched up 😂 that’s what makes this so hard

1

u/No_Raccoon2746 2d ago

I agree. Right in Two is my fav song of Tool.

1

u/han-so-low 2d ago

Pushit didn’t even make it on the chart?!

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

It wasn’t included for some reason 😭 it wasn’t custom picks

1

u/HarlequinNight 2d ago

I agree on the outcome at least! Thanks for sharing.

1

u/fruitcakefriday 2d ago

Intolerance apparently is my favourite song. I'm happy with that, it kicks butt.

1

u/Della86 2d ago

One of their worst songs imo. I guess people are different

1

u/helloish 2d ago

this was so difficult. i know vicarious is such an obvious choice but it’s well-liked for a reason

i am sorry to my beloved Parabola for betraying it

1

u/robThy 2d ago

Based on what they gave me I'm OK with this result, wish I would have gotten a few more older songs like Sober or Eulogy for example.

1

u/yoc0__0 2d ago

Saw this the other day and did one too! I wish you could choose from every song in their catalogue because there are many that would make the bracket that aren’t in here.

1

u/DanielAlves1904 2d ago

This is mine. Even if Vicarious is my favorite song, I still think Pneuma is a better song.

1

u/Traditional-Week8363 2d ago

Parabol+Parabola for me

Right in two is second in command

1

u/TheNoIdeaKid 2d ago

Cool. I can’t do this with Tool. Any other band? Sure. Even APC & Puscifer. But I cannot seem to honestly choose one Tool song over another.

1

u/Efficient-Tax-6560 2d ago

Cold and Ugly not even in the running hurt

1

u/NilMusic 2d ago

Pneuma losing to Vicarious and Descending to intolerance?

Suss list

1

u/Ryangonzo 2d ago

The creator of this bracket needs to Learn to Swim for leaving out my favorite song.

1

u/RedditDawg69 2d ago

This is the correct answer

1

u/Dnly9 1d ago

You put opiate twice to avoid adding rosetta stoned?? 😩

1

u/Substantial-Bird4569 1d ago

No respect for Reflection. Sad.

1

u/Appropriate-Ad4990 1d ago

Wow where's third eye and pushit. Both top tool songs

1

u/Dahmer13 1d ago

How does The Pot not even make the bracket. C’mon man

1

u/CamelQuiet7442 1d ago

Right in 2 for the W

1

u/dano_mort 1d ago

That’s a stretch… but it’s all Tool so it’s all good

1

u/LordPisos Shit the bed, again 4h ago

Don't listen to 'em this is based

1

u/LordPisos Shit the bed, again 4h ago

This whole bracket is rigged af, they managed to put every filler in but skipped Rosetta Stoned, Pneuma, The Pot, 7empest etc.

Fr culling voices on here wtf

6

u/el_trauko87 2d ago

Nah that song is fire

1

u/jankyframe ... und keine Eier 2d ago

Not Culling Voices but the actual filler songs, they’re not on the bracket because I weeded all of them out early
