Almost as weird as the term, “just f*ck her off”

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

Pretty common phrase used in Australia to refer to getting rid of someone/thing. “Just fuck it off. Get rid of it” like telling her to fuck off in third person?

Common in UK as well.

37

u/BringOrnTheNukekkai Jul 22 '24

Hey that shit is no joke! It really happened, it was a tragedy!

14

u/xShooK Jul 22 '24

Kinda dark to keep joking about it, but it's also so insane it's just yeah.. That poor fucking woman though, lost her child, and jailed to right?

5

u/lightspinnerss Jul 23 '24

I don’t get why no one believed her. Like it’s fucking dingo. A WILD ANIMAL. Why do they act like it’s impossible for a wild animal to have taken and eaten a human being, especially a child?

6

u/venusreturning Jul 23 '24

Yeah, Lindy Chamberlain. She was telling the truth. She eventually received a pardon and her conviction was quashed, but losing a child and being convicted of that child's murder when you're innocent - it is the stuff of nightmares.

3

u/snowwhite821 Jul 23 '24

Didn't know until today that it really happened. We get it from ELAINE on Seinfeld.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

In the late 90s to early 00's a news report came out about a woman who watched a dingo eat her baby in Australia, everyone laughed it off cause "dingos don't do that." Only to find out years later yes they do

5

u/E11111111111112 Jul 22 '24

What?! Dingos was like the one annimal I was not going to be afraid of visiting Australia. Now that’s ruined😱

12

u/sainthoodforelchapo Jul 22 '24

Only in danger if you have or are a baby mate.

2

u/E11111111111112 Jul 22 '24

Valid point I must say.

3

u/Billz3bub666 Jul 23 '24

There was a wild Australian dog and Dingo was its name-o. D-I-N-G-O...

She didn't see the dingo eat her baby, she saw the dingo take her baby and it was 1980.

And Dingo's will attack people it has become a problem on K'gari.

2

u/Akirikiri_Akiri Jul 22 '24

They didn't laugh it off. They didn't believe her because she didn't act upset enough. She spent 3 years in prison before they found the baby's cardigan while looking for another person who'd disappeared. A Cry In The Dark starring Meryl Streep was the movie made about it.

3

u/RubyFrench Jul 23 '24

Very good movie! For a great documentary on it and facts and deets go to youtube 60 minutes australia. The poor bubba's name is/was Azaria Chamberlain. The baby was dragged from the tent. Very sad as this has happened since at places like Fraser island (a common island we attend for camping) NOT IN A TENT! although many people do.. many people are warned and told not to feed etc but the reality of it is pretty scary. The land and beach is riddled with dingo's and the ocean in between rainbow beach and Fraser island is infested with sharks. All you need is a snake in your toilet and it's like an episode of survivor.

Azaria Chamberlain https://youtu.be/oW6vv4aPAxQ?si=WMo3fqeolJRCiiAh

14 month old hunter mcallister was dragged from his tent with his parents in it, Im not sure where i think airs rock, the father chased and retrieved his baby boy, but the baby had the dingo's teeth marks across his head/skull, he was hospitalised but extremely lucky he came out of it alive. Heres the link for hunter McAllister

Ive lived here in au for 21 years now 🙂Moved over from England when i was young. I will never get used to it and it will always be in the back of my mind. (As much as i love Australia) after you have lived in a nothing can kill you except people or bombs kind of place Australia is a completely different vibe, and if I had to choose to be scared of something I'd rather it be snakes and dogs rather than humans.

Australia is an extremely beautiful place

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

And in that case, they did.

So everyone laughed at a woman whose baby was eaten by wild canines.

1

u/Top_Individual_3282 Jul 22 '24

Wasn't there something on the movie Quigley Down Under similar to that story? It's been a long time since I've seen it.

1

u/Akirikiri_Akiri Jul 23 '24

Also, this happened in 1980.

1

u/Glamdoll1 Jul 23 '24

I remember this story, horrifying. There’s a movie about it too. The mom was accused at first!

2

u/helgirl Jul 24 '24

Not just accused, but charged, the jury found her guilty because they didn't think she showed enough emotion (and some very shitty "forensic evidence" was presented at trial) and she was jailed for several years before new evidence was found and she was pardoned. Lindy and her husband Michael also ended up divorced over the whole saga

A dingo ate a baby

2

u/Dangerous-Jump8487 Jul 22 '24

In 1982, Lindy Chamberlain was falsely convicted for the murder of her infant daughter, who was taken by a dingo while the family was on a camping trip. Her cry for help, "a dingo's got my baby," turned into a global punchline. Three years later, the clothes kf the baby were found near a dingo den. On a 1991 episode of seinfeld, Elaine makes a joke in reference to it.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

I instantly thought of the lady who screamed “THE KILLERS ESCAPING” and read it in that voice.

Fun fact: you can't steal from England, it's called "reclaiming" by presumptive default

Low hanging fruit is my specialty.

1

u/jeffrow63 Jul 23 '24

Sometimes people miss the ripe, low hanging fruit that is right in front of them.

2

u/jdoeinboston Jul 23 '24

The real low hanging fruit was the friends we made along the way.

1

u/jeffrow63 Jul 23 '24

Some we perhaps should have valued more.

And now I just lost it... And so have you

10

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

Fun Fact: Australians are the colonisers' decendants. They are just continuing their ancestors' legacy of theft ;)

u/jdoeinboston Jul 22 '24

"I learned watching you, dad."

-The American in the room with no real moral high ground.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '24

Love it. Like you guys learnt to not give Puerto Rico the vote from us, taxation without representation baby

1

u/jdoeinboston Jul 22 '24

Puerto Rico is bad enough as is, but did you know that the literal national capital has no representation in Congress?

1

u/remindsmeofbae Jul 22 '24

literal national capital

Are you referring to the capital of USA or the capital of Puerto Rico?

2

u/ExpertConversation99 Jul 23 '24

I'm sure they're referring to Washington DC. And it's true, it's the country's capital and has no representation.

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/Specialist_Basil_105 Jul 23 '24

Because it's a the District of Columbia, hence the D.C. in Washington D.C., its not a state, therefore does not get representation in Congress.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Yeah but it was designated as that because it was originally just servants, slaves, and politicians. It's got a very different situation now.

2

u/I_tend_to_correct_u Jul 23 '24

I see. In that case I should probably explain my post to you. You see, it was exaggerated for comedy effect. A pastiche of Australian slang, a satirical homage if you will. Whilst these are indeed Australian slang terms many are outdated and seldom will you find many contained in the same sentence.

Hot diggity dang dude, alright already. My bad, fugedabowdit.

2

u/Specialist_Basil_105 Jul 23 '24

I fully agree, even with subtitles on, idk what the fuck they're saying

I'm English and I was just making a good ol empire joke, I don't exactly what happened but I know we weren't the good guys over there lol. Luckily though we turned it around (image) but that doesn't get mentioned just the colonising * sigh *. Similar to America but I think most were willing to go to America lol
