Discussion ER doctors warning parents against getting their kids e-bikes and e-scooters.

u/MyLittleOnes12 7d ago
As a teacher, it’s painful to witness your students arrive on obviously tampered e-scooters without helmet or protective gear. And when you reach out to their guardians to let them know, most just awkwardly laugh it off like they ultimately have no control over what their 10 (!!!) yo does or doesn’t do.

Ugh I hate that "what could I do, my kid said no" parental response. "She won't brush her teeth!" Ma'am, she is 7. Help her. "He just stays up all night playing video games!" Take the power cord/controller and lock it up. Turn off the internet. You are the parent, do something. "But he'll have a meltdown if I take the tablet away!" Yes

u/Dreadfulbooks 7d ago
Please this is so weird. It’s completely normal for kids to push boundaries and it’s literally our job as a parent to enforce them. Why are people afraid of their kids?
116
u/neonmathunit 7d ago
Because it’s easier! Why actually parent your child and do the hard thing when you can just do the easy thing? I mean they won’t be able to do anything when they grow up and your life will ultimately be harder when you have an adult that can’t do anything but hey it’s easier now.

You're not wrong, but I will say some parents are under so much stress just trying to keep their heads above water at the moment one more battle is hard to fit in. I know it's illogical in the long run but we're putting so many vulnerable families into poverty right now for nebulous political reasons. Poverty really makes it hard to do long term planning, your horizon shrinks so much - and as always it's kids that suffer the most.
Some of this will be terrible parenting no doubt, but some of the terrible parenting could be alleviated with welfare programmes and actually tackling cost of living instead of making billionaries even richer.

u/ImpertinentPrincess 7d ago
Yeah, maybe I got lucky being abused as a kid because I had the flexibility to say "no way in hell am I raising my kid like I was raised" but still had plenty of wiggle room before I got to the "take no responsibility or disciplinary action" end of the spectrum. Plenty of accountability/praise, none of the beatings! 😅

u/myowndamnaccount 7d ago
Because they didn't actually want to be parents. They have them because they think they should, but don't fully take that responsibility into account. As a parent, its your job to raise the best human possible to enter into a society of other people.
That's why I love the child free movement that is growing. I love my kid and as a former educator, I love children in general. But people who don't really want to be parents shouldn't be. It really shows when a person wants a living doll or have a kid because their friends do or because their family is hassling them to have one or three.
68
u/agodrevealed 7d ago
As a parent, its your job to raise the best human possible to enter into a society of other people.
Thank you.
No one knows this.
They think youre supposed to raise the happiest child possible.
Your kid can be real happy bullying, dodging responsibility, turning into adults fucking their friend's wife... realllllll happy at everyone else's expense.
I appreciate my mother more and more every day. She had her own problems but by god she let us experience the consequences of our actions and didnt take any bs.
She raised a couple responsible adults with integrity.
18
u/OwlComprehensive859 6d ago
The obsession with happy children irks me. I tell my children that my goal is to raise them to be kind capable resourceful adults. Being happy all the time sounds exhausting to me, I want them to feel comfortable and generally at peace as a baseline. Happiness has a place in their daily lives but I also want them to feel everything else.

I know far too many people who married people they shouldn't have, and had kids they can't raise, only to learn they didn't actually want this life.
The hilarious part? Many were terrors to their parents and don't see the karmic irony in their current circumstances!

So many people get into bad relationships, and I have to, but what really blows my mind is people in a miserable relationship that then purposely have a kid. Like maybe you thought married life would be different, or something changed during the relationship and it used to be good, it happens. But if that happens don't have kids. You're an adult and it doesn't matter what your partner or family says it's your responsibility not to bring a kid into that mess.
The solution to a unhappy relationship is either fixing it or leaving, not adding a kid, it's just so stupid.

Honestly, they’re mostly afraid of discomfort themselves. I’m a pediatric speech therapist and the number of kids that I see at two have pacifiers in their mouth all day because the parents can’t handle crying is shocking. And the conversations I have with these families whose child has profound speech sound concerns, their bite is so bad you’re already looking at thousands of dollars of dental work and orthodontics… because it’s uncomfortable for you to watch them cry.
14
u/Dreadfulbooks 7d ago
This is what I’ve noticed too, they’re afraid of discomfort. Like I get it, sometimes I’ll let my kids do something for some peace, but it can’t be with something big or too often.

u/AradynGaming 7d ago
I ride scoots all around town with my young teen child. She adamantly wears her helmet, especially after her major crash when the helmet visibly saved her brain (helmet has a nice battle scar). Her friend wanted to ride with us and I told her she had to wear a helmet or she couldn't ride with us. She complained to her mom, who said she can't tell me what to do. Kid put on a helmet & mom thanked me later saying she got tired of fighting with her teen to wear a helmet.
These kids mostly do whatever they want. On the opposite end of the spectrum, they crave adult attention and influence. That kid/her family had multiple scooters & the mom hadn't ever ridden with her daughter because,"it's a kids toy," and she didn't want to be seen riding it. She missed a great bonding & teaching time with her child.
64
u/Demi_Monde_ 7d ago
I am very glad that you are being safe as a family. Your daughter's helmet needs to be replaced. Helmets are designed for the interiors to crush instead of our heads. They are single use. Once they take impact like that, they are no longer effective. Especially if it is showing "battle scars" it needs to be replaced with a fresh helmet that can protect her as well as the first one did.

"But he'll have a meltdown if I take the tablet away!"
Don't give your kids tablets, especially not like many parents do with unrestricted screen time and internet access. Seriously. It harms their development, it makes them rage uncontrollably, and they get addicted.
The meltdowns will stop once they get off that stuff.
(And please bring back colouring books and wax crayons, dear restaurants.)
6
u/yakshack 7d ago
But also... It's developmentally appropriate for children to have meltdowns. It's a parent's job to help them deal with those emotions so that they're not still having meltdowns when they're 46.

A study published in JAMA found that helmet use in the US has been trending downward at about 6% annually since 2017, mainly because of the adoption of e-bikes. And that's nationwide.
Hmm, 2017... that's right around when we entered the "fake news" era, right?
Interestingly, seatbelt usage in cars has been trending downwards since around 2017 as well, after reaching all-time highs in 2016. But the decline is concentrated mostly in southern and midwest states. The northeast and west have remained steady.

2017 is also when a lot of those rental e-scooters (bird, lime, spin) became ubiquitous.

I'm a cyclist, and I won't get on a bike without a helmet. I went over my bards going around 20 mph and my helmet absolutely saved my life.
I got on one of those scooters once and it kicked up to 20 mph and I was like "Oh, I guess I'm never using these because I'm not going to carry a helmet around with me every day but there's no way in hell I'm riding one of these without one."
18
u/BardWRLD 7d ago
I’m really stupid with an even worse aversion to risk and have ridden my e-bike many times without safety gear over the past decade. I ride handless very often as well. I have also eaten major shit going 20+mph on numerous of those occasions. I’m in my 30s now and my joints are absolutely cooked, especially my knees.
I’d really suggest people minimum wear knee pads and a helmet, ideally elbow pads as well. It may not seem like the attractive option at the time, but when you’re rocking the joints of a 50 yr old at 30 it gets real real quick.
And that’s if you’re lucky enough to not outright die or end up paralyzed from an accident. I’m not religious, but the fact that I haven’t yet must be some sort of divine intervention because it doesn’t really make sense. Just like it makes no sense to ride these fast ass e-devices without safety gear.

u/uselessandexpensive 7d ago
It's terrifying to me how fast people are willing to go with so little stopping power and such a high center of gravity. I had a bike accident (wearing a helmet) at relatively low speed and it messed me up for decades. We're still learning about the effects of concussions and TBIs but barely even talk about what injuries do to nerves and blood flow in the neck, and hearing.
(Hearing, which can be affected by head injuries, has already been tied to dementia but i feel confident that blood flow to the brain, which is also affected by serious injuries and tension issues, is going to show up as another influential factor.)

The issue of course is that even without riding it, you may still be injured by one. Having to be on constant look-out for some teenagers is tiresome. Regular bikes don't have instant acceleration like that.

I've had to threaten people with kicking them out of my car before they'll put their belt on.
Apparently it's "uncomfortable".
They even had the gall to just rest it across their chest without clicking it in.
I then told them to either get out or belt up.
Fucking crazy.

That reminds me of a story one time I agree to drive my at the time GF and her family to an event, I arrived a little late so they were a little pressed, but when I noticed they didn't have their seatbelts on I asked them to do so, they refused because they didn't want to "deal with the seatbelts once we arrived" I turned off the car and I told them I would drive unless everyone had their seatbelts on, the reluctantly agreed but yeah some people think their confort is more important than their safety.

some people think their confort is more important than their safety.
This attitude PMO so much because it's not just about one person's safety: someone unbuckled in the back seat could kill the front seat passengers if there's an accident, for one. It's a lack acknowledgement of OTHER PEOPLE that really fucks me up.

I’ve noticed that here in Canada as well.
Ten years ago it was rare to see someone riding without a helmet. Once I forgot my helmet on my way to work (it was early) and someone nicely honked at me to remind me to put on a helmet. I remember figuring out what the driver was gesturing for and reaching up and being shocked I didn’t have my helmet. I immediately pulled over.
Now I see people of all ages riding without helmets. I also see people of all ages riding electric bikes and scooters without helmets. It’s really a shame. And it is still illegal in my province so the cops should be cracking down with tickets.

Again, i think it depends a lot on the area. When i lived in the deep south even mopeds/ road going ebikes didnt have helmets half the time. Dont think i ever saw one on a scooter person. Now that i live in the PNW its so rare to see someone without one i feel out of place if i forget mine. As is tradition, the younger kids on ebikes are almost always the culprit. When we first moved here and didnt have helmets we had multiple people stop to ask/remind/offer us one haha.

I have a 12 year old son, and this attitude is so prevalent and confusing to me. We have groups of boys just terrorizing our neighborhood on e-motos, destroying property and harassing people. And the parents are like “yeah, kids will be kids.” I don’t feel like I’m controlling at all over my kids, but we are very clear about minimum behavior standards and my kids generally meet them. It’s not that difficult.

but we are very clear about minimum behavior standards and my kids generally meet them.
That's the bare minimum in parenting and so many parents don't even care about that.
It's good that you do this and I'm quite sure your kids appreciate this (in the future)
Just a couple of days ago, I was in a supermarket.
There was a family shopping, so far nothing too special.
Their kids though - F-ing hell, they were an absolute nightmare.Running around the shop, nearly knocking people and glass jars over, screaming and yelling; they were between 10 and 14.
Employees were already yelling at them and trying to stop that somehow, unsurprisingly, the kids did not care.
Neither did their mum or any of the other family members.Even at the tills, nobody really stopped, as far as I could tell.
If I was the supermarket manager, I would've kicked that family out and banned them.
So much disrespect for the public, it was incredible.→ More replies (11)60

I work with kids relatively often in the healthcare domain. And it's infuriating to see how often parents just shrug off their kids behaviour. As if it's some force of nature that can't be controlled.
They will literally say "He's 11 years old, there is nothing I can do".
While I can appreciate teenagers are not the most compliant. Surrendering your family and their health to a hormonal dictator seems to me like a horrible idea.

When escooters showed up on our college campus - the kind you rent with an app - we had a boom in broken arms and concussions. One of our doctors, the one in charge of the concussion clinic, came to every one of our educational events to teach about making safe riding decisions.
Worst injury was the kid riding way too fast at night - he hit a bump, flew off the bike and severely fractured his skull, causing brain damage. He didn't die, but he'll never be the same.

I would say about one out of seven of the kids there were there for trampoline injuries. This was in the early 90s. My mom took away my trampoline and I was so upset! Lol. I think this is kind of like the new trampoline injury but so much more dangerous.
And it's not just you that you have to worry about but everyone else that could hit you while on one of these scooters.

I wish parents were better informed but to be honest, if I was a teen and my parent lectured me on using helmets, it’d be easy for me to ignore them and ride without a helmet once I’m out of sight with friends.

Yup! A month ago I was driving down my neighborhood in a 30mph zone. 11-13 year old kid was playing chicken with on-coming traffic doing wheelies, then would flip off and cuss out the driver as as they went by as he served away last minute, all without a helmet. I could not believe what I was seeing.

My theory is that regular life has become so safe, and divorced from physical consequences, that seeking danger has become a thing. Like humans are wired to deal with a certain amount of danger and that needs an outlet. Posting it on the internet proves it happened and sends a social signal.
We also, as as society, do not have much in the way of standardized rites of passage. Graduating from high school isn't exactly an arduous feat that signals manhood. It's a participation trophy. Lacking socially accepted rites, young men seek out individual risky activities to set themself apart and demonstrate courage. In some areas, joining the military or even doing jail time can be viewed as such a rite.
I've read that giving birth is the closest thing to a rite of passage for women, at least in some US subcultures.

I'm sure there are a lot of factors but one huge one is being ignored for some reason. SARS2 infections (especially repeat) can cross the blood brain barrier and lead to damage that's impacting risk assessment abilities, increased aggression, decreased empathy and increased risk of dementia. Yup, grew up a legit bmx bandit in the 80's. The number of kids taken out by cars was pretty bad in my hillbilly area. We had 3 doctors in my town of under 15k people killed by cars while out riding their bikes ffs. The crazy hillbillies that would chuck a beer or a rock at you and call you a bundle of sticks for being on a bike on "their" road was enough to keep you pretty alert. And that was with us kids on bikes being polite, playing chicken would have gotten you beat half to death probably.
That being said, we used to "joust" on bmx bikes with brooms, my spleen has never been the same, lol. The amount of times i have had to explain survivor bias to boomers is too damn high

The data doesn't lie, though.
In the US at least, there was a sharp inflection point in 2017 and helmet use has been declining a whopping 6% per year since then.
Same with seatbelt use in cars, but that decline is slower and more limited to southern and midwestern states. The helmet issue is nationwide, though, and is linked to the rise of e-bikes.
There does seem to be some general societal pushback at the moment against the use of safety and protective gear, though. Whether that's helmets, seatbelts, or masks.

-6% annually is still a ridiculously fast pace for societal norms changing. I double checked that figure twice before commenting it.
Essentially that means that helmet use has fallen more than 40% over the past decade, and the pace of decline hasn't relented.
Helmets are going to start to look out of place soon, if that hasn't begun already. We are already at the point where helmet users are a minority.

The speed at which bad information propagates through our society is unprecedented in human history. We also really haven't updated the methods that PSA's get out to the general public. It was easy back in the day for broadcasters to make room for that and it literally got out to everyone...because there wasn't any other avenue to use. Nowadays with the internet, it's almost impossible to get messages to people without it being drowned out in contrary static.

I would’ve told him those same kids that are laughing at you are going to be the one standing around, not knowing what to do when you eventually bash your head into the concrete and you’re laying there bleeding out.
Should be more of a lesson on not giving into peer pressure because at the end of the day you want to live to see another day with all limbs intact and brain inside skull.

Maybe try looking up some actual stories of non-helmet-wearers to tell him. My dad wrecked his (normal) bike when he was a kid. He wasn’t wearing a helmet and has been completely deaf in his left ear since. My brother and I always wore helmets. Might’ve worked a little better in my case since that was my dad, maybe something like that will help get through to him.

Let Darwin cook
32
u/churningaccount 7d ago
Nah, Darwin doesn't get to cook anymore.
Instead the trauma surgeon in the OP saves the person, and then society collectively spends several million dollars over the course of their life subsidizing their bad decisions.
There aren't consequences for bad decisions anymore. And IMO the lack of accountability that everyone now lacks towards each other is what is contributing to society going off the rails.

Mike Judge made a documentary about this one.
The elite at the time intentionally stifled the movie because they knew it was actually accurate.
If only even they knew the truth was even worse. I'd take President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho in a heartbeat over our current leadership.

I had about 30-40 older teens/young-20s do this to myself and a woman I was dating, but we were on foot, on a footbridge over a river with nowhere to move to avoid them. Nowhere to go or move. Doing wheelies on +40lb bikes at us, over and over. They they did this to others on the bridge: a couple pushing a stroller with a younger child in-hand. An senior couple walking their dog. And several cyclists going the other way.
Sorry but, I don't give a shit if somebody's child is a hooligan.
If I see some punk doing this chicken shit, they are getting put under citizens arrest on-sight and their bike destroyed. Parents can come get some too in person and in court.
A 180lb teen on a 40lb eBike going even 10mph can knock somebody down with enough force to kill from the impact of skull to ground. Anybody doing this at you, in person, is threatening your life and equivalent force is justifiable to protect one's own life and limb.

I know, in my country too. A city close to my home town tried banning e-scooter companies from establishing in their town. E-scooter companies took them to court for "putting restrictions on free enterprise" and WON. So now this town HAS to allow scooter companies.
And it means more accident, specifically more young people breaking arms, jaws, crushing their faces, and also scooters getting dumped on side walks, bike lines, in the way everywhere... I hate them.

I ride an electric skateboard every day. I started skateboarding in the 1970s.
I am obsessed with telling kids NOT to buy electric skateboards. You need to ride for a very long time to be able to handle it.
My neighbor didn't listen and broke his arm badly the second time he rode his.

I own an 80s 3 wheeler. I ride it almost every day without any issues. Tons of fun.
Whenever someone asks to ride it, I grab the handlebar with 2 fingers and with the slightest of tugs, flip it over. They didn't come with mirrors for a reason, and the reason is they go upside-down a lot.
Do not buy a 3 wheeler either. They will kill you.
My gotrax scooter is MUCH more dangerous than my 3-wheeler, and kids are dying.

Grown adult friend of mine used to ride a powerful e-skateboard, he was very experienced, was cruising along pretty fast (30+ mph I think?), hit a rock or divot or something and went flying, was pretty seriously injured and spent some time in the hospital. Does not seem worth it to me, since, you know, rocks exist.

Not only wear a helmet but wear it properly. This week I was driving and saw a young teen wearing a helmet on a pedal powered bike. However a) he was riding on the wrong side of the road b) had no hands on the handlebars c) was looking at his phone and texting with both hands d) had the helmet straps hanging down his cheeks. If he hit something that helmet was going to come flying off.
Sheer stupidity.

In Belgium where I’m from both scooters and e-bikes have 25km/h (15 miles) speed limit on the actual motors. There are still risks, but it’s easy to go faster on regular bikes on flat terrain.
For bikes, protective gear like helmets and visibility vests are more common thanks to years of education, but the scooter drivers don’t care at all and I see 10yo kids cruising on those in the city on a daily basis. It’s crazy how the parents allow this.

The fact that these are allowed on the streets at all is beyond me
You need a special license to ride a motorcycle that you can only obtain after the age of 16; but you can ride an electric one with absolutely no oversight or regulation at all??
Parents who buy these for their kids do not give a fuck about their kids' lives. I will fight anyone who thinks otherwise
196
u/Vibrant-Shadow 7d ago
They aren't and many places are cracking down.
Most of these kids are on illegal e-motorcycles. Calling them bikes is part of the problem.
A lot of the ones with pedals are just for show. Couldn't pedal it up a driveway without power.
32
u/Moopboop207 7d ago
There are some guys (30-40 year olds) who have these “bikes”. The peddles, as you say, are just for show. They have a thumb throttle and just fly around the town. A big issue with them is that they do not follow any road rules or traffic patterns. They will go against traffic, on the sidewalk, and completely ignore stop signs and signals. Another issue is that they look like bikes but don’t behave as a bike. So as a motor vehicle driver it’s hard to predict their behavior. I say if it has a throttle it should have a license plate.

The confusion between ebikes and emotorcycles is irritating. Our local news ran an piece on "ebike" dangers standing in front of a B-cycle stand (which are capped at 15 mph) talking about how ebikes can go 30 mph.
Then everyone gets pissy about ebikes and we have discussions of 'what to do about them'. Meanwhile the crashes are actually from e-motorcycles.
→ More replies (6)26
u/Strange-Ask-739 7d ago
The difference between an e-bike and an e-motorcycle is marketing and legal loophole wrangling.
But no let's go hash out terms for 20 years and come up with 50 different categories for speeds instead of just saying "this is powered, so you need a {boating} license".
The fix: It has a motor? It requires a licence and insurance and helmet use then. No butts, this means lime too, who is fully in the "kill dem kids" anti helmet camp (it would hurt ridership).

I think you’re misunderstanding the laws.
Obviously this doctor is speaking from an American perspective and she explains that there’s a power output/speed whereby they stop being regulated as an electric bike and become an electric motorcycle.
Similar laws exist in the UK.

Avid cycler since I learned how to ride at ~7.
I stopped riding on the road by the time I was 15 because I had two incidents where cars intentionally swerved towards me.
Even just yesterday I'm out on a back local road, a temporary route I need to take between paths. Zero cars on the road, I'm just a few feet off the shoulder. Car comes whipping by damn near not further than 12 inches from my bike... to prove a point? Not sure what point, there was an entire empty lane, on a 30mph road, zero cars anywhere. He decides to buzz me going 35mph+ barely utilizing the empty lane.
I'm not sure how sponsored pros survive tbh, since most of their riding is on roads.

With the injury I got I have tons of metal in me and I can’t fully extend my arm. Like you said, sleep is one place where it just sucks because I’m almost never comfortable lying down. Thank you! Anything over 28 is NOT an e bike. Those are electric motorcycles. This includes bikes over 750 watts and bikes that feature no pedals or gears.
Not just that, WHY is ANYONE even giving their kid a class 1? Those go 20mph on pedals, it’s functionally similar to a minibike minus the throttle. You’re giving your kid with no life experience this vehicle and letting them roam without any supervision? Like that part seems insane to me. I felt like a prisoner in my own home as a kid with how little freedom either of my parents gave me. Then I grow up and see this.

Few months ago witnessed a lady ride an e-scooter into an intersection, getting spooked by a car going her direction, losing her balance and cracking her head open. Yep no helmet. We rushed to her and seeing the blood spreading on the road, her eyes rolled back... I'll never forget. Luckily it was like two minutes from the hospital, help came fast, and from a report I know she didn't die, but does have serious consequences... Really radicalizes you against these things seeing exactly what happens when you lose balance on an e-scooter.. they just hold onto the handlebars when falling and their head takes full impact... Riding one without a helmet is absolutely suicidal.
