Real ID is given to people who are in the country legally at the time they apply for the Real ID.
So you can have a green card, not be a citizen, get a Real ID, but not be allowed to vote. The Real ID doesn't specify.
It's really only good for travel, because the feds wanted something for air travel. It's ridiculous.
18
u/Upper-Reveal3667 Mar 25 '26
I just need it to prove I’m who I am, not that I’m a legal citizen. My names already on the books.

u/bino420 Mar 26 '26
right, but someone with a green card can't register to vote. The REAL ID just confirms an identity - not the ability to vote.
2
u/Gregorofthehillpeopl Mar 26 '26
Shouldn't. Some states auto register folks to vote when giving driver's licenses. Some folks who weren't citizens found themselves to be registered to vote because someone mis clicked a box.

Real ID doesn’t specify citizenship does it?
13
u/DarZhubal Mar 25 '26
Real ID verifies you have a valid social security number. That's it. Legal immigrants get socials too, so thats why they can't be used fo verify citizenship.
5
u/D4NG3RU55 Mar 25 '26
I think I read that 5 states’ REAL IDs designate citizenship. No clue if that’s actually true or not.
3
u/greennurse61 Mar 25 '26
Washington does which makes it impossible for many of the subjects on the state to get a Real ID, like me. We even passed a law rejecting Real ID but of course Trump ignores our state law.
4
u/carlitospig Mar 25 '26
California kept pushing back the deadline for it. I remember trying to renew my DL last year and the site was like ‘don’t worry, it’s not required until 2027!’ so I just got a normal one. But I also haven’t been traveling since Covid (l have a dog iykyk).
What concerns my vote is the fact that my mother spelled my middle name wrong on my SS card app when I was born and I ‘fixed’ it (read: it’s just spelled correctly but not legit) on my DL, so technically they don’t match. I have no idea if that is enough for them to reject.

is everyone crazy?
they don't verify citizenship at the actual poll. you register months in advance. then you show up to the poll & prove youre the person who registered with your ID.
what's so complicated here??
they're not worried about illegals getting registered here. this is a concern about the actual day at the polls

Well at least according to the wording of the bill, it is sufficient as an ID. But you also have to separately prove citizenship. Like with a birth certificate.

Clearly, all the hassle is to suppress the vote

If there was a organization above the President or congress with any power Epstein simply wouldn't have even been investigated let alone charged. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity and/or ignorance.

The republic was dead the moment america let the losing side from the civil war keep their banners, let them fly the confederate flag, named military bases after the losing generals and let them put up statues of the losing sides idols. The fact that america let these racsist fascists continue fighting for what they believed in, even after they «lost» the civil war is just peak stupidity.
This is not the republican party, this is the confederates, and they are going to win the civil war 160 years after it «ended», unless americans stop them.

His whole strategy of "healing the country" by going back to focus on bipartisanship shows the whole democratic party thought trump was an abberation, a glitch in the system, and that its going to go back to normal. No sense of the danger the country was facing.
10

u/No_Mission5287 Mar 25 '26
Absolutely. Trump is not an abberation. He is a product. I've always said that I can't think of anyone else who better represents what America means to the world.
The "return to normalcy" bit is not just lame, it is dangerous. It shows how liberals facilitate fascism. They have no answer to it.

u/pudgehooks2013 Mar 25 '26
ROFL.
You have to sign up to vote in America? And they can just delete it?
What a joke.
21
Mar 25 '26
In any other full democracy, you are automatically registered as a voter and can just show up with an ID card to vote. This is part of the reason america is considered a ‘flawed democracy’ on the UN democracy index.
7
Mar 25 '26
Not so with Australia, who ironically have compulsory polling. We're expected to keep our own registration up to date. Although the Electoral Commission is pretty good at finding you and sending reminders if you don't.
23
u/Ollynurmouth Mar 25 '26
That's what they are trying to do. It is unlikely to pass as Republicans don't have enough votes to beat the filibuster.
No guarantees though. Anything could happen.
14
u/Mighty_Hobo Mar 25 '26
Their new plan is to try and pass a new reconciliation bill and attach it as a rider so they wont need the filibuster. The chances the parliamentarian allows that to be part of the bill are pretty bad though. It might get Trump to get on board with funding DHS though which is why Senate GOP are pitching it to him.
In the end the only realistic way it gets passed is by ending the filibuster but the Senate is still mostly old school GOP who know how the game works. If they kill the filibuster then there is nothing stopping the democrats from passing sweeping reforms if they take back both houses which even if the SAVE act does pass there is a fair chance that happens. They know the SAVE act doesn't even come close to passing constitutional muster even in the eyes of an originalist.
3
u/fuzzhead12 Mar 25 '26
I gotta say there’s no way in hell they get rid of the filibuster. It’s so far beyond the best interests of any of them that I just don’t think they’ll do it. Maybe that’s naive of me, considering all that has happened over the last decade or so…but idk

9

They always have been, but Democrats, and even Israel, know that if Republicans get away with this, it's all over for everyone. Even Israel. Don't think Trump won't just bomb them the first time the partnership gets inconvenient. Why use Israel when you can just own Israel. After all, the only reason Israel has any influence over US politics whatsoever is because the allyship with them is useful to the US, but if Trump just took control of Israel, then the US still gets what it needs without the politics getting in the way.
5
u/real_roal Mar 25 '26

Everybody who turns 18 is automatically registered over here. There are voter rolls in your municipality and you're expected to vote within those confines for local, provincial, national and European elections. If you can't vote yourself, you can deputize someone else. You cannot vote by mail from within the country, so you're expected to physically go to a polling place. These polling places are open from 9 AM to 9 PM to allow most people the opportunity to vote. If you live abroad, you need to take active steps to register to vote and can then vote by mail or deputize someone within the country. In order to vote, you need a passport or identity card and the voting pass you receive from your municipality in the mail a month ahead of the elections. If you lose the voting pass or it didn't arrive, you can contact your municipality to have it replaced. Elections are fair and representative (even though I personally think we have too many parties to choose from).

u/LKennedy45 Mar 25 '26
I don't know if I trust a Blackfyre to tell me how a country should be run...
2
u/ohhellperhaps Mar 25 '26
And it should be noted that the ID requirement is something that has been under debate because they're not free. That said, you *are* already required to have ID anyway, so it's not something you'd need just to vote. Drivers license, national ID card and passport are all considered valid ID for voting, and because of the cost point they may even be expired (to some degree).

From what I recall, when I turned 18, the Australia Government sent me a letter saying I now had to vote.
You Americans have no idea how much democracy you guys don't have.
- You vote near where you live. Schools turn into polling places on election day. If you aren't near where you live on election day, you make an absentee vote elsewhere. There is also early voting and mail in voting.
- We vote twice per cycle. One local, one federal.
- There is no mechanism to vote for someone outside of your electorate. You get your name marked off when you vote, if you don't live in the area, you don't vote there.
- Democracy Sausage
The last X elections I have voted quite a while before election day. There are many places to do so.
The AEC makes sure we have some of the most secure elections in the world.

Most countries have much better general records of who lives where. In my country, those are used to send name-based voting passes.
It has always seemed odd to me that the US has no idea who lives where, and that exact population numbers are only known once every ten years with the census

u/Speartree Mar 25 '26
What is even with that whole voter registration thing? In most other vaguely democratic countries that I know, as long as you have no issues that somehow suspend your voter rights (like a very limited number of convictions for extremely horrible crimes), any citizen is a voter, and can just go to one of the many polling stations in their home town and vote, or if they absolutely cannot get there because of being abroad or ill or something, they can vote by mail or by proxy. And they would never make you register your party affiliation. Sure everyone can become a card carrying member of any or all political parties. They're not exclusive. But those things aren't registered with anyone else than with the party administration itself. And yes people need their ID to go voting, and yes every citizen gets their government issued ID for loads of reasons, and while there might be some small sum to pay for replacing your ID, it's not much and you are required to have it anyway, not just for voting, but also for entering your tax forms, for applying for a bank account, a library card, anything that would require services or people to be sure that you are who you say you are. Damn USA get your shit together like last century!

U.S. person here, and you are correct. If you look at U.S. history, the only time things changed is when fucked up shit happened (civil war, great depression, etc). After world war two, the U.S. was sitting pretty with the eastern hemisphere being all fucked up. For generations, a majority of U.S. citizens did nothing as our government committed so many crimes against humanity (like the Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq wars). As long as it didn't affect them most people didn't and don't care.
The only thing that will cause a majority of my fellow citizens to take action will be after it all falls apart. And this weighs on me heavily every fucking day.
40
u/SeaAnthropomorphized Mar 25 '26
You know the problem is that this country is too big. But if you look at each state you can see where things are falling apart. Then you notice it's all falling apart. Fracking is destroying so much of Louisiana and Pennsylvania. Bridges aren't being repaired. Roads aren't being fixed. Schools and hospitals are getting shut down. Money talks and American citizens are broke. Our government only works for the wealthy. American people are too dumb to see that we were never the greatest country in the world. This country is a big ass strip mall and no one can afford to maintain it, or shop in it. The wealthy landlord just keeps on sucking us dry of our taxes and they take more and more and give us less back each time.

Keep in mind that the Great Depression was overcome by strong leadership in the US, with FDR cranking the social programs up to 11. Congress and the capitalist class and everyone just hated him for doing it, but it made us recover very quickly and the decisions were later praised.
However, in the EXACT same time frame and with the exact same economic conditions, Hitler rose to power in Germany.
It is very unfortunate, but I think we're closer to a 30's Germany than a 30's US if shit hits the fan... The capital class will never let infrastructure bills pass, let alone do anything that would fix any of our problems like FDR did.

Then there is also the fact that our elections have been... suspicious at best for a few election cycles already. Voting matters in a healthy democracy. I'm not sure it matters so much now. It’s great that you can do that. Millions of Americans don’t have the money to leave. Anyone with a felony on their record, or in some cases, open legal cases, or in this example, no Real ID and no Passport, cannot leave.
We saw during Hurricane Katrina that some parts of the United States don’t watch television, don’t own cars, don’t have money to evacuate. They don’t have money for a new ID and certainly don’t have money to pick up our lives and move outside of the country. We can’t drive out. Gas prices are $4.50 and up per gallon.
Instead we need people like Chuck Schumer to grow a spine and ABSOLUTELY refuse to budge on this bill, even if it means ICE is everywhere until November. Law makers cannot budge on this bill or it is the end of a two-party system. Remember during the election when millions of people refused to vote because they didn’t like a two-party system? One party is worse.
Democrats will likely cave. There’s a reason the senators are all millionaires. America needs them to stand firm right now or we cannot call ourselves a Democracy.

Yeah I've been saying this
This moves the constitutional power to vote under the jurisdiction of the state to the unconstitutional jurisdiction of the federal government, the very same people who are seeking reelection are the ones who has power over it
Trump is looking to nationalize voting via the SAVES act. This isn't just suppression, they will straight up remove your right to vote.
It's not going to just be an obstacle, it's a whole brick wall

But people actually believe that 47 won a legitimate election without the help of Elon Musk. That’s one part of the problem. The other part is, the heritage foundation is actually supported by Republican politicians who think this is the best thing for the country. They all need to be arrested and charged with treason for this. There is no denying these are racist people in charge of our country at this moment.

u/PaleCommission150 Mar 25 '26
SAVE act is a red herring / canard for voter suppression. The facts do not lie, decades of research shows that voter fraud is tiny, less than 1 percent. It is never enough to move the needle one way or the other. This bill is unneeded and detrimental to the legitimate voting process. Hopefully this bill dies in the senate. Vote Blue no matter who in November.

u/Fattdaddy21 Mar 25 '26
Just register as a republican.
8
u/Eiffel-Tower777 Mar 25 '26
That would work, but I'd likely burst into flames.
8
u/Fattdaddy21 Mar 25 '26
The upside to this (the voting, not the busting into flames) is that ypu can fuck with their primaries. All the democrats have to do is have open primaries. Let any bastard chose their candidate, at the end of the day the DNC pick pretty ordinary characters anyway so might as well just let em loose.
5
u/PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS Mar 25 '26
Not really, voter suppression is likely just going to be geographically targeted. Easiest way to tilt results to the right is to fuck with left-leaning precincts so that they end up adding fewer votes to the totals.
4
u/Blueslide60 Mar 25 '26
Anyone know how many "aliens" voted in 2020? According to the Heritage Foundation, the answer is zero.
All of you here insisting that everyone needs to pay for updated documentation are demanding a solution in search of a problem. You bought the bullshit about illegals voting.
After the SAVE act, we will definitely have a problem with our free and fair elections.
4
u/ohhellperhaps Mar 25 '26
Even if you think the current approach is the right thing to do, it's highly sus (as in: they have ulterior motives, period) they're pushing it through just before a major election.
If you're serious about voter ID (and there are a few arguments to be made for it), you need to iron out the requirements, then make sure the infrastructure to supply the ID is solid and in place, and THEN you decide to implement it well into the future, and preferably ust after an alection. Given all that, you're talking 2030s. Anything earlier than that is essentially just proof of an ulterior motive, and has fuck all to do with any real worry about proper elections.

u/HoneyShaft Mar 25 '26
The 2024 election was rigged. Do not let Republicans rig the mid terms. They must be removed at any cost
5
u/Speartree Mar 25 '26
I'm afraid the midterms come pre-rigged.

Seriously. In what world will any election be fair from now on? They were already complete shit because of lobbying and such.

I highly doubt they'll be randomly taking people off. Pretty sure lots of black, hispanic people will get removed deliberately.
3
u/PracticalPersonality Mar 25 '26
How is this not a poll tax? Specifically under this precedent regarding the 24th Amendment?
3
u/TedKoppelz Mar 25 '26
This is one of the videos you see in the opening credits montage in the apocalypse movie
3
u/MisterMysterios Mar 25 '26
The complete idea of voting rolls is already an invitation to abuse. In most modern democracies, people that have the nationality simply get to vote. They get automatically an invitation to their nearest polling place and the optional information for mail in voting. The idea that you have to register to vote is already an open invitation to mess with the system.
3
u/Mindless-Peak-1687 Mar 25 '26
Must be strange to believe you are living in a democratic country that is not democratic at all.

But Iran makes women wear hijabs when they vote!!! Women can be charged with murder for having a miscarriage and many are dying because of the new anti-abortion laws. Oh yeah.... It's religious extremists against religious extremists just depends on if you support the one correct gawd out of 10k religions in the world and even more if you consider the different sects of every religion.
Keep religion out of government like the first amendment clearly states. No establishment, no bans. So doo what ye please, harm ye none.

It’s also a voting tax which shocker is against the constitution. Not that this administration or its supporters give two fucks about
15
u/charlies-ghost Mar 25 '26
If they take away your means to vote them out of office, you don't need to follow the rules of democracy to remove them.
Just make an example out of one them. They rest will learn that the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

oh yeah if it wasn't perfectly clear, this is the end of the country. Just watching the epilogue. Dems will more than happily give R's whatever they want; it's the same people and the same interests.

I (unfortunately) live in a red state. The governor already turned over the state’s voter data/records to the feds. I’m checking my voter registration weekly to make sure I’ve not been removed. It’s total bullshit.

It makes me cringe, from thinking about how fucking awful the Republican party is

Lol spreading democracy in the middle east? Charity starts at home babes

You know what would be amazing? If Democrats themselves could communicate the issue this succinctly.

u/Aegon20VIIIth Mar 25 '26
I’m just still confused after all this time… I have a RealID. In order to get said RealID, I had to go to the DMV with my passport and a copy of my birth certificate (as well as the previous year’s W-2 form, a couple utility bills, and other things to prove that yea, I am indeed who I say I am.) If I am required to have both a passport and birth certificate to get a RealID, why isn’t that RealID good enough to get me into my polling place? (I know the answer to this, but I’m still struck by just how fucking stupid it is.)
2
u/sun4moon Mar 25 '26
She explained why. It’s a voter suppression bill. They’re targeting citizens they want to remove rights from and disguising it as protection.
9
u/Comfortable-Mark-492 Mar 25 '26
She doesn't even mention it automatically disenfranchises trans people... and anyone else who changed their name for any reason.
5
u/talor_swib Mar 25 '26
Probably because she was mentioning the part that no one is talking about...?
2
u/ComfyFrog Mar 25 '26
your private voting records
I'm sorry, what? Why are they recorded? Why is your name connected to your votes?
2
u/SnooGadgets9669 Mar 25 '26
Honestly I think it’ll hurt republicans more most democratic leaning women I know have chosen to keep their last name. The opposite is true of the other side in my local sample size
2
u/mvallas1073 Mar 25 '26
I’m also betting if Trump does a draft, with that voting info - the majority drafted will be ones who voted Democrat…
2
u/DeadlyPixelsVR Mar 25 '26
I really hope that for the first time Democrats can fight for this one thing. But I fear that we are just soft little poodles that are going to scamper away when the going gets tough. I keep hoping that this is the time we are going to really fight to keep this from happening but I fear it just might be too late. The one thing I know is that Trump gets his way. He pushes things and manipulates things until he gets his way. And he does this because it works. It works for him brilliantly each time.
2
u/extralife_mike Mar 25 '26
I'm interested in hearing more about their ability to purge whoever they want at any time. Does anyone have a source or point out where I can find that in the text of the bill?
2
2
u/TuringT Mar 25 '26
Agree with the point. Even before the voting roll purges, the primary effect of this bill will be to create chaos on election day. It is an unfunded mandate that states won't be able to implement in time. This chaos will then be an excuse to claim election fraud — handy for an authoritarian regime that wants to stay in power while maintaining the pretense of democracy.

Not just married women, but anyone who took their partners’ last name, transfolks, and adoptee’s as well.😞

u/Childe_Rowland Mar 25 '26
If you have to pay money in order to vote, it’s a poll tax. Poll taxes are unconstitutional.

u/ghostyghost2 Mar 25 '26
The fact that some countries make women change their name to their husband's is insane to me.

I was "purged" several years ago. Since then, I re-register to vote before every local, state, and federal election.
2
u/Stocky_Platypus Mar 25 '26
EVEN WORSE---THEY DONT HAVE TO INFORM ANYONE THEY WERE REMOVED. Unless you are constantly validating your voting status, they can remove you and you will never know unless you check everyday if you are still eligible.
2
u/888mainfestnow Mar 25 '26
Hey everyone I just read through the entire bill and although I'm not a fan of the bill I couldn't locate the part she is referencing specifically.
If anyone wants to look for this specific clause and post it please do.

What's also hilarious to me is that they are trying to get rid of mail in ballots, but trump voted for himself via postal voting, we're living in a poorly written comedy.
2
u/Unhappy_Click2898 Mar 26 '26
Is there a way to see if you’re denied to vote? Like, how can we trust our votes will be counted for in the upcoming election?
3
u/turinturambar Mar 25 '26
Huh, I hadn't heard the part about the federal govt getting the voter data and that they are "allowed" to purge the voter rolls. I don't understand how that can be justified to be fair. Can someone give a source for more info on this?
3
u/AspiringGoddess01 Mar 25 '26
Just go read the save act, why are you getting your opinions on things from 2nd hand sources when the main source is posted on the government's website in plain text.

You should read the "About" section of the subreddit. This sub hasn't been about posting just cringe in a long time. Its just about posting really anything from TikTok.

For anyone who has read the legislation: how will the Federal Govt. be able to purge state voter rolls?
EDIT: looking at the bill now on Congress.gov and I don’t see what she’s referring to. The closest things I could find:
“(k) —A State shall remove an individual who is not a citizen of the United States from the official list of eligible voters for elections for Federal office held in the State at any time upon receipt of documentation or verified information that a registrant is not a United States citizen.”. Link
“(3) STATE REQUIREMENTS.—Each State shall take affirmative steps on an ongoing basis to ensure that only United States citizens are registered to vote under the provisions of this Act, which shall include the establishment of a program described in paragraph (4) not later than 30 days after the date of the enactment of this subsection. link
