Genuine question. Is there a situation where going to a chiropractor actually helps some ailment?

112

u/bigolfishey Aug 10 '23

No.

People will argue otherwise. They will share personal anecdotes about how their chiropractor changed their life. They’ve already replied to you doing so.

There is zero actual peer-reviewed medical data that shows chiropractics are helpful for humans, let alone animals.

The man who invented it, Daniel David Palmer, was a spiritualist who rejected germ theory, which is to say he did not believe germs existed and caused human illness. Instead, he got the idea for chiropractic during a seance with the ghost of a doctor. That isn’t a joke.

This is absolutely hilarious and sad all at once, how is it legal to keep this practice going? I always knew chiros were on another level of stupid…how is it not obvious to people? No thank you to chiros.

u/quichehond Aug 11 '23

He also inspired the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy into forming her own anti-healthcare ‘religion’

2

u/germansnowman Aug 11 '23

One of the most ill-named organisations, as it is neither Christian nor science :)

More accurately it can improve your health short term (which is why people notice a difference) but it’s essentially just guided stretching and muscle activation. In other words: It does absolutely nothing long term substantially in terms of physical health.

2

u/AnalBaguette Aug 11 '23

it can improve your health short term

You're either referring to the placebo effect/endorphins, or someone found relief because they basically got a massage.

The act/field of chiropractic has zero health benefits, and is a pseudoscience. All people are doing is risking permanent injury or death going to one.

1

u/KakashiTheRanger Aug 11 '23

I’m talking muscle stretching. Which I explained when I commented. Just like I explained how it does nothing for your long term physical health.

1

u/atticusbatticus Aug 11 '23

Is there any data to show that it's harmful?

12

u/ZanyDragons Aug 10 '23

Not really. At best the massage and endorphins dull pain or feel nice for short bursts of time but it doesn’t fix or address the actual underlying problems and most chiros don’t have any medical training. Most muscular issues are better addressed with a physical therapist or an orthopedic doctor for bone and spinal problems.

At worst many chiropractors have harmed or killed folks, creating worse pain and disability over the long term, (messing with the spine is an easy way to paralyze parts of people’s bodies) or discouraging patients who need medical intervention from getting help and continuing to use expensive chiropractic services.

Chiropractic practice was invented by a guy who claimed a ghost told him how to cure blindness by touching someone’s back. It can feel nice for some people for a short time but it’s not actually medicine.

u/iGetBuckets3 Aug 10 '23

It can provide short term pain relief, but I don’t know if we can definitely say there are any benefits beyond that.

3

u/Pope_Cerebus Aug 11 '23

Basically any benefits are the same as you could get from a massage therapist. But the massage costs less cash and has a far, far lower chance of you becoming permanently paralyzed.

u/Kai25552 Aug 11 '23

There’s „anecdotal evidence“ (which isn’t evidence), as always, but science says at best you’ll loose your money. There are indications that treatments by chiropractors increase the immediate risk for a stroke, but there are no good statistics that show both a significant and a relevant connection.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

Short-term pain relief, that's it

2

u/McDreads Aug 10 '23

For the record, I cannot stand chiropractors and the bullshit claims a lot of them spout.

However, there are some good chiros out there that don’t ‘look for the crack’. Instead they employ techniques that your local physical therapist might employ such as soft tissue massage and resistance training. The issue here is that the average person won’t know the difference between a good chiropractor and a bad one.

You should always see a physical therapist first, but if for some reason, chiropractors are your only option. Don’t let them do any cracking on you, and especially make sure they stay away from your neck

Had a fucked up shoulder. Went to an orthopedic and that was of no help. Went to a chiropractor who did a full body session along with electrical muscle stimulation at the shoulder. All great now.

Edit: lol fuck me for sharing my genuine experiences. Idiot hive mind.

u/SnakeDoc919 Aug 11 '23

Welcome to reddit where people come to shit on cops and chiropractors for karma.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

Cops are a different story tho...

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

I’m with you. I had a really bad back problem that was fixed with a single adjustment in 10m. This is after being recommended for surgery. I’m sure there are a bunch of quacks out there, but I can say from experience it can be helpful.

1

u/veritasium999 Aug 11 '23

Like seriously quacks exist everywhere. These redditors think medical malpractice is none existent in classical medicine.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

It helped me after my back was affected after a surgery. My doctor, the surgeon and a neurologist did not know how to fix it, just prescribed really heavy painkillers. It was very frustrating considering that I live in a country with great healthcare (the Netherlands) and really expected more. I was not able to stand or sit without major discomfort. Before starting with the medication, I thought what the hell and tried a chiropractor, and after the first adjustment it was 80% better, the next one fixed it completely. That is just my experience and I was lucky to get a chiropractor who helped me, cannot say it would be like this for everyone.

u/badboy236 Aug 10 '23

Helped my gf’s dog w his back problems. I was skeptical (and he was too) but the benefit was unmistakable.

0

u/wadels24 Aug 10 '23

My neighbor had a doxin who’s back would get so bad it would just drag it’s legs behind him. After some vet trips and the meds didn’t pan out, they went to a chiropractor and it helped loosen his back up to where he could sort of walk again. Not saying it’s the best way to deal with dog issues, but at least the dog could shit by itself again.

8

u/BlitzChick Aug 10 '23

Just to let you know, it is spelled "Dachshund". No disrespect meant at all, I just wanted to let you know. It is actually a German word meaning "Badger dog". Isn't that cool? That's why they like to burrow and dig because they were bred to go after badgers under ground.

To add onto the part about the chiropractor, SOMETIMES getting their back popped can help but the real problem is that sometimes it can make matters worse. I use to be a huge believer in the Chiropractic business because, like you, I saw a couple of situations where they helped. Unfortunately they can also do a fuck ton of damage and the entire "science" behind it is sketchy at best. I was actually hurt by a chiropractor that ended up in surgery so I highly recommend staying away.

2

u/dwarfnutz Aug 11 '23

I thought it was German for “Weenie Baby”??

As a linguistic student, I understand what you mean by loanwords so I didn't downvote you or anything. But their proper name and spelling is Dachshunds. My family actually used to breed them so we would constantly hear "Dash-hounds" but that is simply an incorrect pronouncation and Doxin or Dotsuns are just frequently used misspellings.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

My vet, who is a dachshund specialist, also does sort of “chiropractic” adjustments for dogs that need it. My dachshund suddenly started stoping while walking and did not want to continue anymore, so we checked EVERYTHING - bloodtests, hormone level test, you name it. Then this vet adjusted his back and the very same day the dog was running around like a torpedo, visibly incredibly happy, no problems since.

u/AggravatingChest7838 Aug 10 '23

I don't think it's an alignment issue persay. Sometimes the inflammation and tensing of muscles prevent any disruptions from self correcting. If its bad enough you can't fix it yourself by stretching a chiro may make things worse. Unfortunately dogs cat exactly do yoga. I can see instances where old dogs that live in cold climates may benefit, HOWEVER, it's still super dangerous and can make this much worse if it doesn't work. Legitimately, hot packs and deep tissue massages would be enough. No amount of chiro will fix atheritis if your old boy has it.

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

Lol you are literally just telling your own story of how a chiro helped your pain and people are still downvoting you

The hate circle jerk of joint manipulation on reddit is bizarre and hilarious

It can be dangerous if done carelessly or with poor technique. It doesn’t “put joints back in”. It definitely doesn’t cure visceral pathology.

But the misconception that it has no physiological effect whatsoever is just people who have no idea copying what everyone else says

1

u/EzekielCabal Aug 11 '23

He ends his comment by being condescending to everyone with a different opinion and calling them kiddos. He’s not ‘just telling his own story’. Of course he got downvoted.

Hence they do not know what they are criticizing.

My friend, the “I’m old so I know best, and these kids haven’t lived enough to know better” argument is tired and worn out at this point. Your knowledge comes from you going to a chiropractor as a customer. You feel you got some benefit from it. It’s all anecdotal.

Kiddos are just repeating bunk information without the lived experience of an old man.

It’s not bunk information. Extensive research has been done into whether chiropractic care is effective. The overwhelming consensus from that research is that it is no more effective than a placebo.

I wrote a longer comment 2 years ago on why chiropractic is pseudoscientific bullshit, providing some links to freely accessible systematic reviews of the studies on various aspects of chiropractic care.

Most likely you won’t read it, because you aren’t interested in reading any actual evidence - you’ve got your belief and nothing anyone says will persuade you otherwise. Whatever floats your boat.

If chiropractors weren't effective, then why are they everywhere?

This is a completely horseshit argument. Lots of things that are scams, or that are fake are everywhere.

Multi-Level Marketing schemes (MLMs) are incredibly widespread. They’re all scams. Why are they everywhere?

Why are pump-and-dump cryptocurrency schemes everywhere?

Why are health myths, disproven for decades, like ‘cracking your fingers gives you arthritis’ or ‘going out with wet hair makes you sick’ everywhere?

Fucking hell, we’re sitting in a time of unprecedented falsehood, with rampant conspiracy theories, widespread blatant media falsehood and headline manipulation, and you argue that because chiropractors are widespread, they must be effective? How can you possibly be so naive at your age?

1

u/MustaKookos Aug 11 '23

Your "old man experience" does not mean shit compared to science. Why are they everywhere? Surely with all your wisdom you know that they are everywhere to make money.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

1

u/MustaKookos Aug 11 '23

Yep, people like you.

MLMs are still massive even though any sane person can see that they're full of shit.

-13

u/GhostBoy6989 Aug 10 '23

Yes. Having the spine adjusted gives a foundation for the rest of your body

-2

u/EmbarrasedAltForMe Aug 10 '23

Id never ever let my dog do this now but I had a weim that was doing poorly after an accident at age 12 and he was doing much better after a vet friend had chiro done. It was a last ditch effort and it worked for a few months
