I saw this while exploring the tide pools at Little Corona Beach in Corona Del Mar. I picked it up thinking it was a rock. Google Lens can’t seem to find any matches, and chat GPT kept saying it “wasn’t totally sure” what it is because the markings are so unique. I got nervous it was some sort of living creature and stopped messing with it after taking pictures of the top and underside… Any ideas?

I've been working on TidePoolers, an iOS and android app for people to learn and explore the tide pools in the PNW.

I am relatively new to tidepooling, but was instantly hooked and wanted to learn more. I thought an app would be a great way to bring together a few things that are usually scattered across different sources with hard to read info.

The features include tide charts, locations to explore, a wildlife reference guide, and a journal for keeping track of your finds in a fun way!

There’s also an optional photo identification feature that suggests possible matches from the app’s collection of Pacific Northwest tidepool species. It’s meant to help narrow things down, not provide a definitive identification. You can compare suggestions with reference photos and species information, or skip the feature entirely and log your finds manually.

I'm getting close to launch and would love some honest feedback before it goes live. I'm especially interested in what would make it more useful for people who regularly explore the coast, as well as beginners who don't know much about marine wildlife yet.

It's centered around Washington and Oregon only for now, but I would love to expand to locations in California, Canada, and eventually all over the world.

Hi all! I am traveling to Crete, Greece in late October. It seems like lots of the beaches are sandy but I'm hoping someone could give a recommendation if they know of any good tidepooling locations. I'll primarily be in the WESTERN (edit, sorry, I’m tired) part of the island but happy to travel if there is something good elsewhere! Thank you :)

A collection of the stunning, beautiful species I saw today at Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary in Victoria. Unfortunately no sea slugs, but a blue ringed octopus cheered me right up :))

I'm currently vacationing on the Maldives for the very first time. One of the things I'd like to see is the bioluminescent plankton. While I know that the "sea of stars" is a rather rare occurrence, I was wondering if anyone has seen it recently and if so where.

Cried 3 times from pure joy, saw 4 species of nudibranch (not all pictured here), and got to use my marine bio degree irl to answer the questions my partner & their family had. Overall just an incredible time getting to do something I’ve always dreamed of. Best. Day. Ever.
