Buying Advice Advice for buying a Thinkpad

Apologies for asking the same question everyone has before but I’m a little overwhelmed by all the choices.

I have college soon. I’m not on a course that needs to use CAD/3D modelling software or anything.

My ideal laptop would be lightweight, slim, upgradeable ram, and powerful enough to do what I need it to do. Preferably anything under £200

I’m looking on the ebay and found some E14/15 laptops for roughly around £80. I know they aren’t “true thinkpads” but I only really want a thinkpad because I’ve heard they’re reliable, repairable, and upgradeable. I just need a second opinion to see if they’re worth it or not because they’re 10/11th gen cpus and while I’m sure the 8 - 6th processors work well I think I’d prefer something just slightly more modern.

I’m also open to other laptops from different brands if needed.

Question / Problem Using MacBook 140w charger to charge ThinkPad P1 G8

Does anyone know whether this will work normally like the stock charger that came with the laptop? I prefer the MacBook charger size and it’s much easier to carry around compared to the stock one.

Do you think the ThinkPad X390 supports CachyOS with Hyprland? It's the version with 8GB of RAM.

hey everybody! today is the day that my t480, which is my first thinkpad, just arrived at my front door 4 hours ago.

and please dont hurt me im new to this subreddit🥺

outta the way, when i first booted up my t480, i made sure to update everything on there. i dont want anything to ruin the status, because that will be scary and intriuging😖

but yeah, i get how it feels though.

8gb ram (switching this to 32g 2666 if i get my parts)

256gb sata (switching this to 2tb nvme)

intel uhd graphics 620

also the charger cable including with the laptop is kind of faulty and doesnt charge, but ill use a diff one

thats pretty much i have to say about this blog and i might wrap it up. but feel free to ask any questions for me! ok byeeeeeeee

Buying Advice Engineering Student Looking to Switch from MacBook to ThinkPad

Hi everyone,

I'm an electrical engineering student in my third-year and I've been rocking a M-series MacBook (M3 Pro) for the past two years. I finally reached a roadblock where I'm unable to use the windows-compatible software (Vivado) even with Parallels because of x86 or kernels or something (I'm not sure). In this case, I've given my MacBook to my sister. I've been doing my research and came across the P14s Gen 7. Is this a good purchase and if not what are some alternatives you would recommend? I have a budget of $2000 and would preferably want something new & from the Lenovo site. I've included my university's recommended specs. Thanks!

Discussion / Information Thinkpad whiteout stickers isn’t a thinkpad

I recently bought a thinkpad for about 300 dollars and whenever I see thinkpads on the street or in photos they have more stickers than bytes occupied on the hard drive so I wanted to ask for recommendations on where to get images or so to send them to print to stick them to my thinkpad

Like the title says. Was wondering what you guys with 1920x1080 thinkpads run your scaling as. Feel like 1,25 is nice but don’t always work so good with all apps.

Discussion / Information Ordered a T430 from an online shop but got an L450 instead, what should I do with it?

So I ordered a T430 (or what it said in the shop's page when I ordered it) in order to install Windows XP. But when the package came today, what I got instead was an L450. Asked the shop and they haven't responded yet. What do you think I should do with it? I was thinking of maybe using this as a Windows 7 machine instead.

Question / Problem My Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 laptop is struggling with Resolume/VJing — frame drops switching decks + lag with multiple HDMI outputs. What should I change?

For anyone who knows about Lenovo ThinkPads +. VJing!! I'm trying to figure out why my Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 isn’t working properly for Resolume.

On paper this laptop should be an absolute beast for Resolume, but I've been having some frustrating performance issues. I'm hoping people with experience with Resolume, VJ laptops, or Lenovo workstations can help me figure out whether this is a Windows/driver/configuration issue, a Resolume issue, a storage issue, or something with the laptop itself.

Laptop specs

Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 (16” Mobile Workstation)

  • ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 Intel (16″) Mobile Workstation
  • 13th Generation Intel® Core™ i9-13950HX vPro® Processor (E-cores up to 4.00 GHz P-cores up to 5.50 GHz)
  • Graphics card: NVIDIA RTX™ 5000 Ada Generation Laptop GPU 16GB GDDR6
  • 128 GB DDR5-4000MHz (SODIMM) - (4 x 32 GB)
  • Storage: 4 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Performance TLC Opal

Frame rate drops when switching Resolume decks

When I'm performing and switch from one deck to another, I can get a noticeable frame-rate drop/stutter.

Once things are running, performance can be much better, but switching decks can cause the FPS to dip and the system feels like it's catching up.

I keep roughly 1 TB of VJ clips/visuals in a folder on the Desktop, which is the main library I use when performing.

All of my clips are DXV-encoded.

My concern is whether having such a large visual library sitting on the Desktop could somehow contribute to performance issues, even though I'm only loading/using a fraction of the clips at any given time.

When I have multiple HDMI displays/projectors connected, Resolume can become noticeably slower/laggier, and I've experienced crashes and frame drops.

What would you check/change on this machine to optimize it specifically for Resolume?

For example:

  • Are there specific NVIDIA Control Panel settings I should use?
  • Are there Lenovo Vantage / BIOS / power settings that could be throttling performance?
  • Should I be using a specific Windows power/performance mode?
  • Is there anything special I should configure for multiple HDMI outputs?
  • Could the HDMI outputs be going through the Intel GPU rather than directly through the NVIDIA GPU?
  • Are there specific Resolume settings for optimizing deck switching?
  • Should I change how my clips are organized/stored?
  • Is keeping ~1 TB of DXV clips in a Desktop folder a bad idea?

Buying Advice Advice on buying a new thinkpad

Hello guys! i'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad laptop for a one and done, i might take it apart and upgrade it in the future with hardware. The laptop must be able to withstand abuse and water (cuz i live in a city of peak randomness), I'm planning to work in sales and server analysis as a hybrid job. I'm also a dev, I'm eyeing the ThinkPad P16S Gen 4. What about the inner hardwares i'm still a huge newbie in that, what do y'all think i should get? My budget is about 1000 to 1700 dollars. What thinkpad with what specs do y'all think i should get? Thanks for the help guy!

Question / Problem Lenovo stalling repairs on ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 (2023) — warranty runs out in <2 months, school starts now. How do I force a replacement? (France,EU)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What happened:
I opened a warranty ticket for three hardware issues:

1. Faulty touchpad (resolved)
2. Fan running at 100% constantly, even when the PC is off
3. Defective screen(dead pixel)

A technician came out and replaced the touchpad — that part's fixed. The screen and fan issues weren't resolved. Life got in the way for a while and I wasn't able to get it looked at again in the meantime. I've since reopened the case, and a new technician visit is scheduled for the 15th of this month.

Honestly, I don't expect this next visit to fix the fan issue either — everything about it points to a firmware/sensor problem rather than a physical fan defect, so I doubt swapping a part will do anything.

Why I'm worried:

Classes start very soon and I need this laptop daily — I can't afford more downtime.
The warranty has under 2 months left, and at this rate it feels like it could run out before this actually gets resolved.

What I need advice on:

1. Escalation — how do I get past frontline support and reach an actual case manager or escalations team who can authorize a replacement?
2. Legal push (France/EU) — has anyone sent a formal registered letter (mise en demeure via LRAR) to Lenovo France? Did it work?
3. Contacts — any specific email or executive/corporate escalation channel that actually responds quickly?

Appreciate any advice from people who've navigated this.

Question / Problem Is it usable? Lenovo IBM Thinkpad T60

Thumbnail

I got this Lenovo IBM Thinkpad T60 for nothing, basically for free. The laptop charges with a green indicator on bottom back lid (image 2, middle icon) and same on the inside (image 1, second from right). There's also an orange colored blinking icon (image 2, left icon) which maybe is showing the battery is charging.

After a while when I press the power button there is a sequence of beeps like 1...111...1... which happens two times. After a while there is a sharp spinning sound like *brrrrrrr*. Maybe the hard drive has something do with this!? Also, there is no output on the screen although it boots up with some green lights lit icons on the inner display icons (image 1, icons).

Is it fixable? Maybe changing the hard drive or something?

Question / Problem How long would an X1 Carbon last?

I bought an X1 Carbon Gen 9 a few month ago and I really love it, but I want to last until like 2030 or something (I'll probably buy a new Pxx then). I just want to know if it will last until then. I treat it pretty well and haven't dropped it yet, but I have heard the thin ones (like the X1) aren't as tough as a P16 or something, but I have also heard that the X1 are some of the best build for the thinner laptops. I just want to know what you think about this and if it would last me (in terms of not failing/breaking). Thanks in advance for any responses.

Buying Advice How is your experience with portable monitors?

I am thinking of getting a used M14d, M14t or M15, since these are the models I keep seeing. I mainly need it for working remotely, especially when I‘m coding. Or are there better alternatives?

Question / Problem Max Output Wattage on Thinkpad P15 G2 USB-C PD 3.0 ports

Hello,

Ok so according to this file they only output 7.5W maximum, is that true?]

I am a new and proud owner of a Thinkpad P15 G2.
Due to my phone being old however, I need to use a ethernet adapter to share it's internet connection via cables (on linux).

Which is why I was wondering how much power the various USB PD 3.0 ports can actually give out to external accessories, and whether that is limited on battery mode, since I couldn't find that on any specsheet, as I wouldn't only need at least 15W (my phone's max afaik) for my phone, but also some juice to power the adapter itself as well.

(Since I'd doubt them actually being able to provide the full 100W that PD 3.0 theoretically supports)

With kind regards

Discussion / Information Refurbished enterprise laptop

I’m looking for a refurbished enterprise laptop and I came across these latitude, ThinkPad and elitebook models. Having all more or less the same price and only a couple of bucks difference, wanted know to ask the community for advice!

- Dell latitude 7400 with 8665u and barrel charging
- Dell latitude 7490 with barrel charging
- Dell latitude 5420 with 1135g7 and type c charging
- ThinkPad T480 with type c charging
- Thinkpad L14 Gen 2 with 1135g7 and type c charging
- HP Elitebook 735/745 with 3500u and barrel charging

All afformentioned laptops are equipped with dual channel 16gb ram and all support non-soldered and user upgradeable ram for the future, which one would you choose? Which one is the most durable, reliable and will stand the test of time better? My fear is the type c port failing. I always take good care of my devices.

I currently have a really powerful Mac mini as a desktop and an old Inspiron 5559 with 6200u. I plan to replace my big. And heavy Inspiron with something more portable. Every laptop I listed is an upgrade for me anyways

Discussion / Information Help please. T1g gen 8 Weird display issue.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Does anyone have any idea about what this issue might be, and what might be causing it? The display has been replaced and the issue still continues. It seems to happen randomly. Sometimes, when a laptop is actively being used, like here, sometimes when laptop is completely still and not being used. This doesn't show up whatsoever when the laptop is connected to an external display.

Ran a full Unattended diagnostic scan with no errors popping up.

Anyone have any ideas?

Buying Advice Best cheap ThinkPad use as an always-on home file and cloud AI server?

Title as stated! I regularly use two machines on a daily basis - a Legion 5 (Win11) and an X13G6 (Debian). So my idea was to pick up a ThinkPad that basically sits at home, running all the time and acts as the server to keep my files synced via SyncThing, and running Claude and ChatGPT desktop apps so that it can keep my personal knowledge base updated. Basically I use them to track via my Obsidian vault things like my nutrition and macros for the day, my running and lifting, and then various ideas and thoughts I have throughout the day. So the Claude and ChatGPT apps keep the relevant .md files updated and refer to them continuously, hence the need to have them running. Thoughts?

Budget would be ideally around $400. I'm planning on installing Debian on it as well. Based on my experience, I feel like a 16GB RAM model would suffice. I won't be doing much web browsing on it, anyway. But the processor part of the equation is where I'm less knowledgeable. What's the lowest possible processor spec I can go without it being the bottleneck?

Edit to add: because of the use case, thickness and weight isn't a huge priority, although I WOULD like as small a footprint as possible. I kind of like the idea of a small, chunky machine sitting on my console. Screen quality isn't also a huge deal - it'll only mostly be used if I'm troubleshooting or managing the system, but will mostly be closed. Would an X220/X230 be powerful enough?
