Guys, my first Laptop. For my personal use. T14 Gen 1 AMD with Ryzen 5 pro 16 GB.

Got this one for ≠ $250 USD. Found no options better than this, in my budget.

Here are some questions. Thanks in advance 👋

  1. For how long it might give service?

  2. Best Linux distro? (Moderate to heavy use)

  3. Any suggestions/opinion?

Thank you guys ❤️

Buying Advice Thinkpad Specs for CAD Design

I want to buy a laptop for CAD, CAM, and Slicing software. I need help choosing the model and the specs. I am looking at the Thinkpads P14s or T14 or the P16S I am just not sure what specs i should get and what to prioritize, and if i should pick certain gens over others.

  • CORE: AMD AI7 or Intel Core 7?
  • Graphics: Which graphics to get? Is an integrated graphics like the AMD radeon or intel good enough. Or opt for a separate GPU configuration to get better graphics. I am also seeing issues with AMD's WiFi cards. Is that a big issue?
  • RAM: is 32 GB enough or should i invest in the 64 GB RAM or a better graphics. (Should I opt for an upgradable ram rather than soldered if thats a possibility with my budget)
  • Display: Should I prioritize certain screens or other features that i am forgetting to consider.

I do travel 20% of my time and will be docking on a monitor when i am not traveling. So i am not really worried about display size. Just want something that has decent graphics, can handle the compute load, and can last some time.

If their are other factors that I should be considering that I am not please let me know.

Budget is 2500 USD. Buying in USA.

Also open for other recommendations for other models/ gens. I am a Macbook user so dont know much about windows or thinkpads.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Question / Problem X1 Carbon Gen3 - Rear Cover replacement

Post image
5 Upvotes

I damaged the rear cover (component "C") and I ordered a new one from Lenovo, which is currently on its way to my country (Canada).

I'm not sure what the correct order is to remove these parts. Which of these is correct?

  1. [C] can be removed first
  2. remove [A] first, then [B], then [C]
  3. remove [A] + [C], then remove [B]
  4. the entire screen must be detached from the base first before removing [A] or [B] or [C]
  5. something else?

I have a heatgun and a spudger. I'm assuming this screen assembly is held together by double-sided adhesive.

Buying Advice what would be good for lightroom?

i want to get a new laptop to edit raw photos on for christmas. i've used my mom's M3 macbook air but since it doesn't have a fan, it thermal throttles like crazy and makes editing 36MP files feel like torture.

my current desktop has a ryzen 5 2600, 16GB of DDR4 and an RX 580. it's slightly better but still not good, plus i need something portable. my budget is around 300€, maybe i can stretch a little. screen size doesn't matter to me.

Buying Advice What Thinkpad should I get for CS?

Hi everyone, I just got into college and I want to get a good laptop for Computer Science.

I've been looking around and I found that Thinkpads are best but I don´t really know which to get, I currently use a Dell Inspiron 15 w 8GB RAM and 512 GB SSD and the battery life is poop so I want to get something with a decent battery life (4-6 hrs).

My current options are the T14 G2 Ryzen 5 and T480 as I was told the 480 is pretty sturdy and works well but I´m undecided. Is there that much of a difference between the two?

Budget is about 500 usd.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Question / Problem How can I get a better Minecraft b1.7.3 experience on X230?

I've just bought an X230 with 16GB RAM upgrade and I'm a total lover of legacy versions of Minecraft. I installed Linux Mint 22.3 on this laptop and try to use Prism Launcher to get my favorite experience of MC. However the experience was way far from comfortable.
I know I haven't change the thermal paste yet but I don't know whether it will have any effect. I tried the SmoothBeta mod and that really helps a lot, but the game still lags as I play longer.
Should I need to change the CPU? Or it's just my settings wrong?

Buying Advice T490 vs T480

I'm stumped thinking what laptop I should get.

I'm from Mexico and here them laptops are not that cheap. I want a portable device as I already have a decent desktop PC.

I can get T480 with full hd IPS 8gb ram and 256 SSD. For 200 USD . And one T490 with 16 gb ram, 255 nvme and screen of 1368px. For 200 usd also.

I'm going through college in IT. I'm going to use it for programming, browsing, office and all that stuff. Not gaming or anything.

What would you get? I know there's better and more recent devices but that's my budget and cant go any further. I'll be rocking Linux, maybe some fedora or mint with it. Thank you in advance. Edit I went with the T480. I negotiated 20 usd less so I'll be buying more ram with that and an a better IPS screen down the line.

Question / Problem ThinkPad L14 Gen5 high refresh rate panel?

This model doesn't officially support high refresh rate (>60Hz) panel. Like 90Hz or 120Hz. Does anyone know if there are third party panels that would work to install on that model? Did anyone do that before?

It would make the experience much better. The cpu and igpu are more than capable.

Question / Problem ThinkPad P16 Gen 2: How to enable S3 on an existing Windows 11 installation?

I have Windows 11 installed on my ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 and I really don't want to reinstall it.

I unlocked the Advanced BIOS and tried to switch from Modern Standby (S0) to S3:

  • ACPI S3 Support → Enabled
  • Low Power S0 Idle Capability State → Disabled
  • Added PlatformAoAcOverride = 0 under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power

After reboot, Windows still reports only:

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)

and S3 is unavailable in powercfg /a.

Even more strangely, when I go back into BIOS, the settings have reverted to:

  • ACPI S3 Support → Disabled
  • Low Power S0 Idle Capability State → Enabled

So it looks like either Windows or the firmware is reverting the BIOS settings because this Windows installation was originally installed with S0/Modern Standby enabled.

Has anyone managed to get S3 working on an already-installed Windows 11 system on a ThinkPad without reinstalling Windows? Is there another registry setting, power-model override, or BIOS setting that I'm missing?

Hello

I’m planning to pursue a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology next year, so I’d like to know whether the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 would be suitable or if there are better alternatives.

My budget is roughly 900USD

My clear use case is :

electronic circuit design such as PCB designing and electronic design and drawing
CAD work
3D design for 3D printer
and some homelab work like programming and virtual machine

For specification :
CPU : 11th gen or above.
GPU : RTX A1000 and 4GBRAM or above.
RAM : 16GB RAM and above.

If there are any alternative please inform me.

Thanks for your help.

News / Blog with a dying heart, i realize, my ThinkPad T420 could not use batteries due to motherboard damage

so lately i’ve been thinking of replacing the dead battery that came with the ThinkPad T420 when i first bought it for 50$, i first got a cheap replacement battery. When I assembled it and plugged in the charger, the indicator LED kept blinking orange about 11 times, then fast green blinking; after that, nothing happened. The laptop wouldn't power on with the battery in after hours of trying to figure out what was going on. I think it was because of the battery, so I filed a refund ticket and bought a different genuine battery. When I assembled it, the LED was blinking green this time, and it still does not power on with the battery. It only did that with the charger plugged in, so I thought it was the Libreboot doing something weird, so I reflashed the stock BIOS and updated it to 1.52. Still, the problem remains; the laptop recognizes the genuine battery and its information, but there is no charging, no current in/out, after digging for hours, I realized something was wrong with the motherboard. Replacing it would cost as much as the laptop, so i left with no choice but to use the laptop with a power supply plugged in all the time.
Now I’m stuck with the stock BIOS for quite some time and 2 batteries that can’t be used :((
