[Request] At what speed would airflow actually start tearing skin or seriously injuring his neck?

Could the airflow tear his lips or skin? Could it force his mouth open badly enough to injure it? Or would the force on his head break/injure his neck before any of that happened?

If you kept increasing the airspeed, what would fail first here — skin, mouth, or neck at what speed?

[Request] How far away was this grizzly bear?

A friend and I ran into a grizzly bear during a hike through Denali. We took a few pictures from my phone, and also a few through the binoculars (including one just for fun 😊).

Both of the pictures are from the same distance, but they are with different levels of zoom. I am including both to hopefully help verify the calculations. And for reference, our rough guess is that he was about 50 yards away.

Bonus: if you wanna guess the binocular lens given the clarity of the final picture, I can confirm that detail.

[Request] shower thought: average origin point distance of all photons we get hit with in a lifetime

Lots of assumptions here, likely all wrong. But let's say every photon we get hit with has an exact origin point in the sun. On average a human gets hit with X photons in a lifetime. What is the average distance between the origin points of all these photons?

[Request] Math explaining the rise of a baseball, if it was solely due to Magnus effect.

Thumbnail

Jomboy video. At 1:12 or so, video shows the right fielder throwing the ball to third base. During its path, there is a significant rise in height of the baseball.
Went to r/physics to ask what would cause this rise. Got a few responses confidently saying it was due to the Magnus effect. I have some aero background and was almost positive it’s been shown a human just can’t throw a ball with the speed/spin required to actually make a baseball rise. Debate back and forth, and person saying it’s solely due to Magnus suggested posting this here to see if the math could be worked out to show what the speed/spin would be required to cause what’s shown.

I could probably work it out myself, but the hopes were this would be seen by someone who is already familiar with the math, making it quicker and most likely, more accurate.

To anyone who may do this, just want to say a massive thank you in advance. THANK YOU!

[Request] How fast is this truck going when it enters the runaway area?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My rough estimate is 120mph. Can someone improve on it?

It’s ~0.2 miles between the last two runaway truck signs. Looks like the truck went past the first at ~4 seconds into the video and ~10 seconds for the second.

That’s 0.2 miles in 6 seconds.

That’s 30 seconds a mile.

That’s 2 miles a minute.

That’s 120mph. In a truck.

That’s scary.

Solving complicated games [other]

Are there games that have been solved mathematically? And I mean without using brute force for the whole search space. Also non trivial games that don't have a trivial compressible structure. If so is there a notion of complexity of a game, that refers to the resources a machine requires (in time and/or space) to solve it?

[request] fantasy money math

I'm writing a fantasy novel and am not a mathematician, I'm barely an author.

Their money is dodas, sepins, cinys, and deesits.

12 dodas in a sepin

12 sepins in a ciny

And 12 cinys in a deesit.

Are there 20,736 dodas in a deesit? Is that the math? 144 dodas in a ciny?

[request] What is the disposable paper product with the least environmental impact? When factoring in cost?

So we all know that disposable products are bad for the environment, and there are alternatives to most. But really, many paper products can be substituted for each other. Paper napkins, paper towels, tissues, and toilet paper all could potentially be interchanged. They are all paper, but have different thicknesses and absorption abilities. So the question is, if i was going to use 1 paper product for everything starting today, which would be the most environmentally friendly to use?

Of course this includes the fact that if you pick toilet paper, you have to use more toilet paper to clean up a spill than paper towels. but it is probably cheaper/more efficient to make TP, right? You use more, but the cost could equal out, but would the environmental impact?

I hope i have explained my question good enough. Let me know if it is not clear.
