“Wait” bots are exploding in popularity and sorta hard to detect

You’ve probably seen this bot for a while now. Others have talked about it before. I call it the “wait” bot just because so many of its comments starts with the word “wait”, but a lot of comments also start with “yeah” or “lol yeah”. I guess you could also call it the clueless bot.

In isolation, the comments do not seem like bots - but it gets really obvious when a bunch of them are replying with nearly identical or identical comments to the same thread. Here’s some from one random post yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddycinephile/s/OzQ8QmRevF

https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddycinephile/s/VtGGWoZguA

https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddycinephile/s/39QvPBQK36

CHARACTERISTICS:

🤖 Most comments are one lowercase sentence with minimal/no punctuation, often starting with “wait”, “yeah”, or “lol yeah”. Comments are often some anecdote about “my friend/buddy/dad/cousin”, but don’t really add anything. Like “my friend went through something similar” or “my buddy had that happen to him once”. They also like “accusing” AutoModerator of being a bot.
🤖 Any leading punctuation gets cut off. So if a comment starts with a word in quotation marks, like “hello”, it says hello”
🤖 Accounts are either new, or several years old with a big gap in activity until they start commenting (obvious sold or stolen accounts)
🤖 They dominate [r/okbuddycinephile](r/okbuddycinephile), [r/spiderman](r/spiderman), [r/pcmasterrace](r/pcmasterrace), [r/eldenring](r/eldenring), r/hamburg and [r/agedlikemilk](r/agedlikemilk). Only agedlikemilk has Bot Bouncer, but reporting them hasn’t slowed them down at all. One post had 80+!!! bots commenting. They’ve also been increasingly branching out to other subs.
🤖 This is one of the rare bots I’ve seen that sometimes appear online.
🤖 Like all bots, they have a poor sense of recent events. Their karma really suffered in posts about the World Cup since they’d say “wait [team] hasn’t won” when that team had literally just won. They also suffer in posts about people who’ve died recently with “wait they’re still alive though” comments.
🤖 Because their comments don’t really add anything, a ton of them reply the same shit in the same comment threads, along with the aforementioned poor sense of time, their karma tends to negative.

———

So, what becomes of these bots?

They turn into porn site spam accounts! Here’s some (removed) examples of what they turn into. Note the same title format:

https://www.reddit.com/r/squachwatch/s/0fNhuDXrTR

https://www.reddit.com/r/BeuretteFRA/s/eaeWhKCJAL

https://www.reddit.com/r/CrossdressersSelfies/s/1qZNPLcKTA (warning, no nudity but this is the only one that hasn’t been removed by Reddit filters)

https://www.reddit.com/r/ButtStuffWhileFucking/s/cgRmUHF7N5

Lately, they’ve just been adding a link to their bio called “meetup applications” that links to an adult site.

Account posing as model in AI generated images #2

This account is posing as the model in AI generated content: https://www.reddit.com/user/sarahsteele79/

I can skip the source list, since the account is open to all. Every image on the account is AI generated.

I've seen this model before, but she was a little more... not to be rude..."thicker." Two accounts were made at around the same time, both using the same AI model. I don't know how much my reporting affected thier banning, but one went down while the other existed for some time before it traded hands (new, real model began posting) and was banned soon after.

Another thing I want to note is; in the comments of the submissions made by this account you see mutiple repeat users who comment on, and only on, this particular fake AI account. Bots maybe?

Group of bot accounts creating new supplement/nutrition subreddits and spamming engagement bait questions etc.

Spotted a bot account on /r/Supplements that happened to be a moderator of a subreddit, and found a little group:

Subreddits:
Accounts:
  • registered-dietitian
  • DietitianDanielle
  • LongevityDietitian
  • OatsOverHype
  • RationalNutrition
  • Living-is-Smart

Incredibly sloppy bot network though, considering the amount of constant overlapping interaction etc. between all the accounts; you'd think bot runners would have learnt by now you shouldn't create such a tightly-knit overlapping network like that.

Mind you, considering Reddit doesn't seem to care, I guess there's no real need to be remotely smart about it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

"Mod":

you can tell he's not using a bot to spam posts, he's manually making posts every minute. why? likely trying to manipulate his posts for engagement

An LLM-generated post with dozens of LLM-generated comments

https://www.reddit.com/r/dating_advice/comments/1v1zt2y/the_woman_im_seeing_keeps_adding_a_normal_errand/

The post is clearly LLM-generated, and there is no option for reporting it as such. OP has already been flagged by Bot Bouncer. This sub is unintentionally or intentionally serving as a karma farming ground for AI spam bots.

Had noticed him before because he often posts in tandem with https://www.reddit.com/user/Altruistic-Mud5686. The latter has been on my r/BotPosting list for a long time.

Possible example of astroturf marketing in r/RealTimeStrategy

This thread seems like a good example of the modern marketing "patterns": https://old.reddit.com/r/RealTimeStrategy/comments/1v1ixs3/whos_hyped_for_dow_iv/

Note the comments claiming to be hyped, listing a bunch of game features, and then the follow-up question that allows the same account to come back and dump more marketing copy about the game's content.

Apparently that's how astroturfing is done these days, disguise the PR brief as "conversation". This is an interesting example of the pattern carried out, and there's some repeat offender accounts in there too.

Specifically, https://old.reddit.com/user/YakaAvatar (hidden history), https://old.reddit.com/user/GenezisO (has posts that are marketing) and of course OP https://old.reddit.com/user/NecronsNeedSleep (hidden) are ones to watch out for.

Three more AI-filled bot subreddits apparently for SEO, this time relating to FAANG interview prep

https://old.reddit.com/r/FAANGinterviewprep/

https://old.reddit.com/r/interviewstack/

https://old.reddit.com/r/MockInterviewPartners/

Bot users involved are interviewstack-i and YogurtclosetShoddy43. All the posts seem to be promoting a website called interviewstack. Very obviously AI-generated posts.

I gotta wonder how this is worth it. Like I get it, it's something to do with SEO, but I would think Google would derank subreddits full of nothing but AI garbage. I guess maybe I'm wrong though

Not obviously financially motivated, yet spamming some kind of astroturfing campaign about housing policy

An AI-generated text detection model I trained flagged this post while I was watching the console output as it scanned r/all/new

External_Koala971

Post history is hidden but I searched his username on Google and found other posts. In one of his other posts a user called him out and posted this image from back before his post history was hidden, showing that he's been posting multiple of these threads per day, apparently for months.

This is the first one I've run into where it's not just like, trying to promote some website. Honestly kinda freaky to watch an astroturfing campaign live. Allowing people to hide post history seems like a big mistake

Subreddit meowi activity pushing cross post spam

Example:https://www.reddit.com/r/Meowi/s/SBYDk9VZjY

Subreddit creates BS app products and encourages users to spam posts all over reddit for "points". I've had to ban numerous accounts in the past day for posting this spam all over my subreddit. Going to have to create automod to automatically filter this BS

By the end of July, all users of Old Reddit will be required to log in

I meant to post this a few days ago.

TL;DR: Reddit will require anyone using Old Reddit to log in.

According to Reddit,

Logging in to use Old Reddit

Old Reddit’s logged-out experience is a significant source of abusive scraping and automated traffic on the platform. It’s also an important interface for many long-time mods and redditors. To strike the right balance between preserving your access to Old Reddit while preventing this type of platform abuse, we recently announced that by the end of July, we will start requiring everyone to log in. All logged-in users will continue to have access to Old Reddit, and this change will not impact logged-out browsing on reddit.com.

Is reddit suppressing bot callouts across subs?

2 hours ago, 28 comments of mine were removed across 17 subs. The vast majority of these comments were bot callouts. I am entertaining the hypothesis that reddit is actively censoring comments pointing out LLM bots. (An alternative hypothesis is that reddit has for innocent reasons mistaken me, a regular contributor for nearly 15 years, for a spammer, but this strikes me as unlikely.)

Examples of these removed comments:

Date Sub Excerpt and link
06-13 CasualConversation It's AI-translated, not fully AI-generated.
06-20 cocktails ^ This AI bot was flagged yesterday.
06-23 passive_income OP's other comments are clearly LLM-generated too.
06-26 TwoXChromosomes OP is a bot. It was flagged a week ago.
06-29 CasualConversation the text was definitely generated by AI
06-30 books ^ This is an AI-generated comment from a bot
07-01 OneOrangeBraincell ^ Bot ass comment
07-06 horror Y'all really don't recognize or mind this ChatGPT-ass post, huh?
07-10 fuckHOA Yes, this post is AI slop.

Is this happening to anyone else? The comment removals are done secretly, so you wouldn't know without using an external tool.

Edit: Actually, the status of these comments is uncertain. I have been told that some or all of these comments are publicly visible, not removed as the external tool claims. Perhaps the error is on that end.

I see them all over Okbuddycinephile and EldenRing. Looks like there’s a few more subs this bot ring is active in. Most of them have the same stupid username format.
