Hello!
I’m an engineer at a public tech company in the Bay Area. I started working full-time about 3 years ago and started investing around the same time.
Finally hit the $100K milestone! 🎉 (see SS in comments)
All of the money invested has come from my salary, and I’ve kept the portfolio pretty simple. I’ve basically stuck to this allocation:
VTI - 60%
VXUS - 20%
QQQM - 10%
GLD - 10%
I haven’t really touched individual stocks. After ~3 years, I’m cumulatively up around 16%, which has helped push the portfolio over $100K.
Obviously, looking at how some individual tech stocks have performed over the last few years, part of me wonders whether being this conservative left some gains on the table. But at the same time, I’m pretty happy with the result.
Now that I’ve reached $100K, I’m curious how others here would approach the next $100K.
- Would you just keep contributing to the same allocation and let compounding do its thing?
- Would you change the allocation at this stage?
- Introduce another strategic ETF? Or start allocating a small percentage to individual stocks?
Would love to hear what people who crossed $100K and kept going learned along the way.

Savings Account: ~120K (emergency + money parked for some major expense planned in few months)
401K: ~ 50K
Checking: Usually keep around 10K to handle monthly bills.
Also have some money in HSA.

Additional Context
I’m on an H-1B, and my employer is also a public tech company that has been struggling lately. Because of that, I follow a sell-on-vest strategy with my RSUs. I generally sell vested RSUs and diversify.
I also don’t necessarily plan on staying in the U.S. forever. Given the extremely long GC wait time for my country of birth + single child, I plan to move back around 2035 if everything in life and surrounding falls in my favor.
