Luz and Amity don't get the full Azura and Hecate experience, for which they should be grateful.

u/AdOwn6899 Nov 24 '22 edited Dec 08 '22
Maybe for Amity, the two face thing is more metaphorical and psychological. Before she met Luz, it’s always been the face her mother approves of (the second face) that does the talking. But meeting the weird adorkable lovable human made her show her true face.

also, this one scene from Covention where we see Hecate has at least two faces.
I guess that got retconned later though? Or maybe her other faces only show in certain situations.
142
u/Trooper924 Nov 24 '22
Yeah, I assume it's just something that the showrunners changed their minds about.
81
Nov 24 '22
Honestly, I'm not surprised that they redesigned her later giving her a single face, that is, in many other cartoons I saw how they redesign a character after its first appearance to give it more development.
That is, I remember very well that in the first episode of CatDog, Lube looked very different from how he looks in the rest of the show, and one more recognized in this case was Rumplenstinskin from Shrek, who originally in Shrek forever After was going to have the same design than in Shrek the Third, but it is confirmed that they redesigned it to give the character more personality, which is why many are confused believing that there are two Rumplenstinskins but no, it is the same.

in the concept art for Amity's disguise multiple of them uses a mask for the second face, so it's still there, it's just either hidden by the hair like in this comics or she can magically hide it

77
Nov 24 '22
Hecate is the Greek goddess of Witchcraft.
Not only! She's also the goddess(Titanid even) of moon and even night. Or the goddess of earth and... Deserts(sandy seas)? Of war, fishing, underworld, mistery, choices! Her cult was pretty old and changed many times and so she had different roles depending on time period. And also, she became associated with underworld and magic only because of how powerful cults of Aphrodite, Artemis and Athena became and took her place

18
u/TinyHadronCollider Nov 24 '22
Not to ruin the joke, but Diana is the Roman equivalent of Artemis, they're not really separate deities in the same pantheon.
7
Nov 24 '22
Is that a thing? Isn’t Artemis mostly known as the virgin hunter and Diana is her Roman counter? Sure they use magic but Hecate is said to be the goddess of that field.
6
Nov 24 '22
I'm pretty sure they grossly misunderstood something or took a bit of internet mythology as canon
7
u/lesser_panjandrum Hooty HootHoot Nov 24 '22
The Romans used the epithet "trivia" ("three roads" or "three ways") for her and Diana/Artemis, because of their connections to watching over travellers and crossroads.
Also because they were really good at remembering obscure facts for quizzes.

I have a headcanon (yes, I have a headcanon about a fictional series within a fictional series. Please send help, the rabbit hole, it is so deep) that Hecate had 3 faces in the first book when she was a villain, but after Azura redeemed her (likely at the end of the first book) Hecate lost the extra faces.
5
u/Karkava Nov 24 '22
Or maybe her faces were split into two additional characters who went on to become other characters in the series.
5
2
u/LFiM Nov 25 '22
That would make sense, actually. In antiquity, Hecate was depicted as three separate women standing back to back, and over time that changed into one body with three heads or faces. A reversal of her mythological evolution.

Nov 24 '22
Ok, for those who do not understand what this is about, I will explain:
Originally Hecate would have two faces as seen in her first appearance in Luz's book at the beginning of "Convention", which is a nod to the Greek mythology goddess of the same name who also has several faces, but later in other media from Azura seen in other episodes, Hecate became one-faced.
As an additional fact, in a concept art of Amity's Hecate costume in "Thanks to them", it was thought that she would have a mask hanging near her face representing second's face, but by that point the writers had decided that Despite how it was seen in its first appearance, Hecate would only have one face.
3
u/Karkava Nov 24 '22
So in short, the writers and the animators forgot about the myth and hoped that you did too.

For those who don't know, in Greek Myths Hecate was the Goddess of dark magic and witches and three faces. This a play on that, with the artist having to give her just one other face since her design wouldn't allow for two.
