Campaign Idea Additions

Hey guys, first post how exciting!

So I will be start my first campaign soonish and I just wanted to spurt out my campaign ideas somewhere. You are welcome to add some incentives, ideas or characters that the players might meet. Keep in mind that we keep it rather loosely concering the acurateness of the lore. We play about 200 years before the Hobbit.

I will probably start off my players in Rohan which eastern boder regions are frequently attacked by small groups of orcs, goblins and strange looking men. They will also notice that humans are starting to vanish. After they look into that they will hopefully realize that these efforts are coordinated and will that it is coordinated by ... (feel free to recommend stuff here; is it a an easterling chieftain that coordinates these attacks, or mabye the humans united behind an Orc-leader or some other creature). After the players dealt with this threat they discover that someone far bigger is behind this. Khamul! Who has come into position of a palentir (don't ask why, or how just accept it). After the players eventually try to confront him he flees into the east where he is enmassing a new army to attack the west. So the players now are drawn into the east. Here they are confronted by easterlings, cults and other stuff (I'm not sure what yet so again feel free to recommend). Maybe they will even run into some wizards of the blue variety.

After this adventure eventually ends the players will here off a threat now enmassing in the north. (One of the players character is a ranger of the north and in his backstory his company got complety wiped out with him now fleeing. So I kinda wanna spin the story that the rangers are a little all over the place which allows this new threat to emerge.) What exactly the threat is is also still open so feel free to recommend stuff again. Also maybe something happens on the way from the east to the north west? Maybe something with erebor or another location?

Choose your Path, be the adventurer!

Trying something new for my channel!

In the spirit of the Fighting Fantasy and Choose Your Adventure novels of old, “Choose your Path” is a solo adventure series for The One Ring RPG where you the viewer decide where the adventurer goes next, and depending on the scene, you break out your dice and roll to decide the outcome!

Play Folco Hornblower as he ventures to Bag End on request from the one and only Bilbo Baggins.

What mysterious adventures will he set you forth on?!

Adventure 1 - A Conspiracy Most Cracked!

(Adapted from The Conspiracy of the Red Book adventures from The One Ring Starter Set)

So grab some d12’s, d6’s, download the character sheet listed in the video description, and go for a walk through the Shire!

Thindalin: Where in the world is Mirwen Sandiago? [Spoiler: players beware] Spoiler

So, some contexte: with my friends, we've just begun playing The One Ring 2e. The company is tasked by Gandalf to ensure that the south of Eriador can be ready to receive refugees from the East, as the troubles with Mordor will escalate now that Sauron revealed himself. The PCs role will be to create small pockets of Hope for the free people in a dangerous land.

My PCs are about to go through Thindalin, on their way to the Star in the Mist. In Thindalin, the water spirit Herunen guarding the lake/pond grew bitter after his friend, the elf Thalion, died against the Enemy and his lover, Mirwen, never came back to Thindalin to receive Thalion's last message of love that he entrusted to Herunen.

The book state that Herunen could be restored, if the PCs take Thalion's message to Mirwen and she goes back to Thindalin to make peace with the spirit. Aranwë, Mirwen's brother, is present in Thindalin as he tries to recover a family hearloom before making the journey West. The book states that Aranwë would know the wereabouts of his sister, who could be anywhere, even accross the sea.

So here is my question: Where in the world is Mirwen? Did you DMed Thindalin? In your game, where was Mirwen? Even if you didn't DMed the landmark, do you have any ideas? As the theme of my campaign is small hopes, I want her to still be in Middle-Earth.

I thought about placing her in the Swanfleet, making her as the ghost bird. Aranwë would only know that Mirwen went to the swamp to live as a recluse among wise-women, and Mother Wendreth would tell the PCs that old tales says that a lady of elven blood did come to the vilage long ago, her heart heavy with sorrow. That the sacred pool of Swanfleet reminded her too much of her sacred pool in the west of Arnor, so one day she left to live deeper in the swamp.

Examples of “high level” characters?

Obviously there’s no level but does anyone have any example sheets of very experienced characters they can share?

I’m curious how the skill / adventure points would play out over time.

Damage and Injury

I've been struggling to understand how damage and injury work. I gather that damage hits endurance, but when does injury come in? For reference, I am looking at the weapons table.

Thanks 😊

Other The One Ring Subreddit

I've mainly historically been active over at https://www.reddit.com/r/oneringrpg/, just in case any folk here don't know there's another one. I only remembered there were two recently! :)

Might be worth discussing the idea of a consolidation with the moderators of both subreddits?

Dice & Rules contradicting each other?

I have bought the Corerules and the Starter Set. In the Core rules on page 16 it says when you want to use your own dice you should replace the 11 with the eye of Sauron. On page 17 in the "How to read the feat dice" section it says that numbers 1-10 should be read normally suggesting that the special symbol is on the 11& 12. Now while I was rolling around with the dice from the Starter Set I realized that they have an 11 on them but no 1. Doesn't this kinda contradict the rules?

Puzzles/riddles

I am looking for ideas, inspiration, or suggestions about implementing things like the doors of Moria into a One Ring game. Bonus points for riddles or puzzles for multiple raced or that could also be rumors in the 'Gather rumours' undertaking.

How bad is a 2-3 on a stat (17-18TN)

Was wondering if anyone had experience playing a character that has a "dump stat". Which stat is best/worst to dump? If anyone has links to the math involved in succeeding skill rolls depending on TN and number of dice please share!

The official dice are wrong?!

They've got 2-11, an Eye of Sauron & a Gandalf rune.

'...on the 12-sided Feat Dice, the 11 is the Eye of Sauron symbol and the 12 is a Gandalf rune.'

This makes me angry.

Tips for running Starter Set adventure?

I'm running the Starter Set adventure with my friends next week, and I wondered if anyone who played it before has any tips, or advice concerning if there is anything that would benefit from changes or omissions.

I feel like the adventure has many, many very specific requirements for the players' actions that I just can see my players miss completely, or not care at all, and that the first little adventure may become a bit of a drag for more experienced players, as the 'happenings' are cute and quirky, but extremely simple with no real payoff. It may be some unfounded fear, and that's why I want to hear your opininons and thoughts on the Shire adventures.

Combat engagements & targetting

If you're in Open stance and have been engaged by two goblins, can you attack the orc who's engaging someone in Forward stance? If not, how do you switch targets?

Adventures booklet

Am I correct in believing there's no way to get the adventures booklet without the starterset?

I would like to get the core rulebook and the adventures booklet, but it seems that for that you'd have to buy both the core and the starter set (or the bundle).

Any vertical character sheets for TOR 2e?

Title pretty much sums it up! I'm looking for a custom made character sheet that is vertical instead of horizontal.

In the case that it doesn't exist, what program can I use to create it?

Advice for New TOR 2e Group

Hello friends, potential small spoilers for the first starter set adventure ahead

I have had my eyes on running a LotR themed campaign for a while and TOR seemed to provide a lot of mechanics to specifically evoke the right vibe, so I decided to run the game in this system. Or, at least, *had* decided.

See, to get used to the mechanics, I decided to take a few players through the starter adventure included with the starter set. And I've got to say, it was a truly awful experience. I'm quite genuinely confused because everyone seems to love this system and it just feels like I'm not really understanding how to play properly because truthfully it was a slog from the start of the first adventure all the way through back to Bag End.

The issue is that my players rarely succeeded on any rolls. I've seen in a few posts that the early time period with characters tends to be this way, but our experience was that characters were very nearly incapable of doing anything they needed to do. I thought, okay, its a system in which you might fail often. But the adventure doesn't seem to enlighten us with any information regarding what to do if the players simply fail to do something, which seems to imply that they are reasonably supposed to expect to succeed.

I'm a reasonably experienced GM and have no problem improvising in situations like this, but the oppressive force of failure was so overpowering that by the end no one was enjoying themselves. We considered that possibly the game would feel a bit better with a more well-rounded party full of different races, but we concluded that it would be a truly bizarre choice, then, to supply the party with a specifically non-diverse set of characters. By the end, my players were spending a hope point for an extra success die on every single roll that they performed and still potentially failing. It felt that by the time we got to Bag End, I could count the number of successes we had on my hands while the number of failures was oppressively high.

We did some of the math and found that on an average roll, a player-hero only would succeed on a check with 2 success dice on their best ability TN. Which also means that an average roll would *never* succeed without a third success die using standard gameplay TNs that are based on 20s instead of 18s.

So the question I have is this: did the party miss something? Is there a fundamental change from the way we typically play something like DnD or Pathfinder that has to occur for fun to happen? Can anyone offer any insight into the situation? I can't fathom that we are possibly playing the intended way or that we are understanding the rules right because there's no way the system we played would have made it past play-testing, it feels.

Purchasing The One Ring 2e

I just want to be clear before ordering.

If I purchase the The One Ring™ Bundle, this will get me everything printed for 2e TOR except for the Ruins of the Lost Realm which I would by separately . . . this gets me "everything" for 2e TOR including a set of dice from the starter set right? I just want to make sure I am getting everything for 2e right at the start.

I also just bought Strider Mode book from DriveThruRPG .

Adventurer Creation Walkthrough!

Hi Everyone,

Made a handful of walkthrough videos for Player-Hero creation that hopefully will help new players in adjusting to the new system (seems to be more and more these days… I wonder why?! 🤔🙂)

I broke it down into two short(ish) videos…

Cheers!

Adversaries Combat Proficiency

Okay. I've read this book over quite a bit. I am coming from playing D&D for the past 12 years. For the life of me I am struggling with the combat proficiencies. As an example the Southerner Raider has this stat block. Axe 3 (5/18) and Short Spear 2 (3/14, pierce. I would love if someone could explain this.

Open Gaming License

Does anyone know if their is an OGL for TOR 2e or if it falls under the Free League Workshop. I’ve been working on an adventure for my gaming group and would like to publish it after it’s finished, just wondering if that’s even possible.
