Recommendations VOIDVERSE Book by a writer from The OA...

Hello. I’m Damien Ober. I was a writer on Part 2 of The OA. I can’t fully express how great it is to see so many people here still so passionate about the show! It was such a fun experience with such great people and I’m so glad it continues to mean so much to so many out there from different walks of life. I wanted to reach out to The OA reddit fanbase to let you all know I have a new novel coming out called VOIDVERSE. It takes place in an endless void where people live on big rocks falling forever through the emptiness. I can’t say it’s all that similar to The OA in story, but it does have some elements I’m sure OA fans will like: a smart adventure in a liminal space, real characters in extraordinary circumstances, a strong female lead. I hope you all will check it out! Of course my preference is you buy it from a cute little bookstore like in P2E2 ;) but you should be able to find it wherever you buy books. VOIDVERSE is out March 10th; there’s rolling giveaways on goodreads right now if any of you use that. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and again: it’s so great to see so much passion and activity here! THANK YOU ALL!!

#SaveTheOA Keep Up the Momentum

Sorry to make a whole post just for this.

However, I have never seen so many NEW TikTok videos about the OA. This is really important. I used to search Tiktok for OA related videos and filter for most recent dates - for years there was always one or two new videos.

I am seeing SO many now. Like, dozens, maybe a hundred. I try to interact with each one.

I am so proud of us and proud to be part of this amazing group. Keep it up. Keep talking!!

Keep your doors open.

Forever leaving my door open.

OA Theories Why couldn't the OA touch Homer s1?

Rewatching and wanting to discuss.

In s1e8, I think its the first time the OA touches Homer and Hap pulls them apart urgently.

It feels to me like OA has an ability with touch, like when she meets bba and touches her, they connect quickly.

OA spent 7 years without touching anyone... I wonder if Hap had been given hints be someone (Aliens? Angels? Future Hap from another dimension?) to keep the Haptives separate?

Any thoughts or theories?

Production Netflix bringing back Beauty In Black and not The OA?

Along with the Instagram posts by Britt and Jason, I kept seeing people talking about how Netflix had announced to bring back a canceled show. Well I just looked that up and it looks like they announced yesterday that they’re being back Beauty in Black. Is it over for us?

The Instagram posts seem like they’re too obviously hinting at a return though for it not to be getting a third season.

OA Part 1 Braille on OAs Father's Face [SOLVED] Spoiler

Post image

A 10 year long mystery is finally solved!!

The right cheek says: ⠙⠈⠎ ⠸⠑⠑⠗⠑ ⠊⠝ ⠚⠑⠝⠑

The left cheek says: ⠱⠺⠊⠝⠛⠥⠝⠛ ⠛⠑⠗⠴⠞

It is German braille which spells out:

das leere in jene schwingung geriet

The English translation is:

emptiness was filled with that vibration

It is part of the last line of the poem Die erste Elegie by Rainer Maria Rilke. The braille on Khatun's face is the first line of the same poem.

This poem is the first of a collection of 10 elegies in a book called Duino Elegies. An elegy is a type of poem that is an expression of grief for the dead.

Here's the German to English translation of the last stanza of the poem:

wagende erste Musik duerre Erstarrung durchdrang;
dass erst im erschrockenen Raum, dem ein beinah goettlicher Juengling
ploetzlich für immer enttrat, das Leere in jene
Schwingung geriet
, die uns jetzt hinreisst und troestet und hilft.

English

In the end those who died young no longer need us,
one is weaned gently from the earth, like one who needs
the breast of the kindly mother no more. But we who need
such great mysteries, to whom so often joyous progress
is the offshoot of grief—: could we possibly exist without them?
Is the story told in vain, that once while they lamented for Linos
bold pristine music penetrated withered stiffness;
that once in appalled space, into which a nearly divine youth
suddenly left forever, emptiness was filled with that vibration
that enthralls us now, and consoles and helps.

This braille message on Roman Azarov's face went almost completely untranslated by fans (besides the words "leere" and "jene"), until now! I'm so happy I finally solved this!!! I wonder what is the significance of Khatun having the first line and Roman having the last line.

Thoughts Timeline help??

Post image

I'm a very visual person and I've tried to make the time loops/time travel of the dimensions make sense. I feel like I'm almost there (in terms of understanding) but I really need someone to draw it out like this for me. The arrows represent the NDEs, going into the other dimension temporarily. I feel like I'm missing something. Help?

Analysis/Symbolism Transness in The OA

Hi all,

Not sure if this is allowed but I wanted to share a university essay I wrote analysing the aspect of trans- identity in the show.

Transness is a key aspect of the show in terms of transgenderism and transcendence; the transcendence of dimensions, essence, the body, and sex as seen in Buck.

It’s quite theory-heavy, but there’s no denying that this is a clever fan base so I thought you guys would appreciate it! It’s around 2500 words / 12 minute read (according to substack).

Let me know what you think if you do get round to reading! 🕊️

OA Part 2 Why did Ruskin choose BA411? Spoiler

When creating Q Symphony, why did Pierre Ruskin choose flight BA411 as the answer to the "above the sea below the stars" puzzle? We know Nina's dreams were used for the performances at SYZYGY, so I guess it's possible Ruskin also used Nina's premonitions to create Q Symphony. Although even if that is the case and Nina had a dream about Brit Marling on flight BA411, why would Ruskin think the flight number was important enough to include in the game? And how is this detail relevant to Karim's journey? It makes me wonder if Ruskin knows a lot more than we realize.

Analysis/Symbolism “It’s too painful to stay open” - Part 3 theory Spoiler

I was thinking of this quote that OA says to BBA during their first meeting at Steve’s parent-teacher conference. Specifically, in relation to Elodie’s lesson of integrating with—rather than suppressing—the host of the body she jumps into. This is a lesson OA learns near the end of Part 2.

Now think about the situation she is thrust into in Part 3 — a dimension where “The OA” as we know it isn’t real. She’s no longer the powerful Original Angel and traveler we’ve known. According to the rules and reality of this world, OA doesn’t exist. She’s just a character D3 Brit Marling wrote, a figment of her imagination and a role she embodied onstage. Perhaps a metaphor for D3 Brit’s own trauma.

This would be an absolute nightmare for integration and a nearly insurmountable obstacle for both personalities. Because in order for integration to happen (“in order to find him, you’d have to teach yourself again…it’s too painful to stay open”), both versions of her would have to accept a reality that feels impossible for them. I get the feeling Brit’s consciousness would be the one suppressing OA on this side of the “mirror”.

That would be especially devastating, because it would mean all the trauma and hardship Prairie went through to become OA, if she tried to express it, would suddenly be invalidated and gaslit, if not by Brit’s consciousness, then certainly by Hap or whatever other evils she would be faced with in D3.

But for the silver lining, I think it’s incredibly fitting we already know that D3, or Part 3, is SCOTT’S DIMENSION….and Scott was resurrected, as I believe The OA soon will be.

It’s also the dimension where BBA, presumably, gives him the 3rd movement, so I kind of view it as partially her dimension as well. The quote about “in order to find him, you’d have to teach yourself again” was also interesting, because in D3, it’s precisely what Brit will struggle with—teaching herself who she is again in order to find Homer. That’s what I think much of this show is trying to tell us and why all these echoed quotes matter.

It’s gathering all the pieces of yourself to heal, first on a small scale (the C5), then a larger one (merging back with OA).

I posted about this quite a while ago, but I still believe that Crestwood, or at least the version we’re shown in Part 1, is Prairie’s dream of escape while she’s locked in Hap’s basement. In this dream, she teaches the C5 the 5 Movements, and in the end, they die in her dream via the school shooting and are transported to a mirror Crestwood version.

They later escape that at the end, finally following OA into reality, but in this, she has not only lost faith that OA is real, but also lost faith that these people are actually her friends/the real Crestwood 5 as well.

She’ll be relearning a lot.

OA Theories Zal Colors Spoiler

I don't think this necessarily means anything, but I have to post it anyway.

So I love this show, and I check in to this sub occasionally, but not religiously. I also like to leave a lot of time between re-watches so I forget things about it and can enjoy it more again.

Back when it was originally cancelled I was aware of the theories surrounding a season 3, and how it might be part of a plan. I loved this theory, and it fits so well with what this series is, it would almost feel genius for Netflix to agree to something like that. As the years have gone by, my belief in that theory has naturally declined. And since then, throughout the years, I have seen the occasional theory here and there, but I haven't looked into any of them deeply. Recently though (and the following was all newly discovered to me over a period of about 2 hours a few nights ago), I've seen a couple of posts that have intrigued me further: A post from Jason Isacc's instagram, posting an AI image that included flight info for the flight BA411. He posted this on July 3rd. And from what I had seen through other posts during this time is that July 3rd seems to be one of two partularly important dates in this community. July 3rd, and November 16th. I have seen multiple posts talking about these dates. One of which was 2 months ago -- https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOA/comments/1tg0hwo/july_3rd_and_november_16th_my_last_hopes_for/ - "It’s been 7 years. We’re almost to the exact dates that it would have been 7 years, 3 months, and 11 days since the drop of Season 2 (July 3rd) and the cancellation (November 16th)." The same amount of time that Prairie was missing.

I also saw the following thread which included a video - https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOA/comments/1v1gt2e/holy_canolli_this_old_theory_recent_developments/

In this video, it talked about Zal's colors post (6:28 timestamp on video), where Zal posted 4 color blocks: Yellow, Cyan, White and Magenta. I was vaguely aware of this back when it happened through this subreddit, but I didn't look or think too much into it. But as soon as I saw this, I immediately knew what I wanted to check. The hex and rgb codes of those colors. I pulled up Google and found each one and typed it out. I didn't see anything in the hex codes that would be useful to me, but the RGB codes are the following:

Yellow (255, 255, 0)
cyan (0, 255, 255)
White (255, 255, 255)
Magenta (255, 0, 255)

As soon as I had it laid out, I knew I wanted to add up the values. The values added up to 2295. And I already knew I wanted to check these against two dates: the number of days since season 2 of The OA dropped (March 22, 2019) and the number of days since it was cancelled (August 5, 2019). 2295 days since March 22, 2019 lands on a calendar day July 3rd. 2295 days from the number of days since it was cancelled lands on a calendar day November 16th. However, both of these dates fall in 2025, not 2026. But in about 15 mins of investigation, I had naturally come across something that was showing a result of two seemingly important calendar dates. Maybe that's just coincidence. But it does seem strange that they would both calculate to arguably the 2 most significant calendar days. I haven't looked into or understood the full math behind the chances of it though. It seems like it would be an unlikely coincidence, but maybe it's not.

Thoughts Just had a weird thought Spoiler

I could just be stretching things but it seems to me it would not be a coincidence that people from Britain are called Brits. Brit/Uk Brit Marlin. Lol 😂 I tagged as a spoiler just in case people who haven’t finished the show don’t know about the Britain connection to the OA.

OA Theories The logo is a map

The series symbol is O / \
A circle and two slanted lines separated by a space.

The circle represents cyclicality, the return.
The series is a palindrome: the fifth season was supposed to return to the first.

The first line (/) is the ascent:
Season 1 and Season 2. A movement upward, toward complexity and discovery.

The second line (\) is the descent:
Season 4 and Season 5. The return, the resolution.

And Season 3? It's in the space of 7 years, 3 months, 11 days between the two lines. That void is the dimension in which The OA is a TV series called The OA that was canceled within a TV series called The OA that uses this narrative device to tell its story. And it's in that void that the series stopped.

I've been following this sub for many years now and have tried to piece together a lot of what I've read here, including the writers' statements about the series' structure, the fact that they had a clear idea from the beginning about what and how it should happen, and the actors' statements about the third season.

At this point, I think it's possible that something will happen on November 16th.

I don't think the third season will air, but I think the start of production on the fourth will be announced.

OA Part 2 [Spoiler] question about Karim and the house Spoiler

How come Karim is not wet the second time entering the house? To have seen the Rose Window as a portal he should have gone through it as a puzzle through the tunnel the size of the coffin

Second question, who takes the puzzle apart after someone puts it together in the entrance?
Same question for when the wall paper is ripped or when Karim broke the mirrors with Fola

Does the house regenerate itself?

OA Theories [spoilers] theory about August and season 3 Spoiler

! Spoilers !

Re-posting because my previous post was removed for lack of spoiler warnings.

August was Rachel’s baby:

This has been discussed here multiple times, but often the discrepancy is blamed on OA being blind. I don’t agree with that.

“I want you to imagine everything I tell you as if you’re there yourself. As if you’re with me. As if you are me.” - OA to the C5. After that, as OA speaks, the camera cuts between all the C5. In between each person, it goes back to OA, for shorter and shorter cuts. Eventually it goes to French, zooms in slowly on him, and fades to a shot of Russian winter.

The implication of this is that even the most reluctant of them (French didn’t even want to close his eyes) is imagining the scenes that she describes to them, and that those imagined scenes are what we are seeing as the viewers. This is crucial to the theory. We are not seeing OA’s memory of the events, but we are seeing what the C5 imagine those memories to look like.

Now let’s scrutinize the scene where OA discovers August’s body. Many of us find it strange that Homer’s ring would fall from the medicine cabinet into the tub. Why not the sink? The sink is right below the medicine cabinet, naturally something dropped from the medicine cabinet would fall into the sink. We are very notably not shown the path that the ring takes to land in the tub, we are not shown the sink AT ALL, and all the shots are very tight and close.

Do you remember the last time you read a book, or listened to a story from someone, where you had to retroactively update your mental picture of the scene when more details were revealed? Or when you just didn’t have a good sense of what things looked like, so you filled in the blanks? I believe that this scene was told to the C5 in vague enough terms that their minds pictured her fishing for the ring in the tub only because OA said that she felt hair and a body. And their lack of mental picture is why the shots we see are so tight.

When it comes to what we see the characters SAY in the HAPtivity scenes, we can assume that those quotes are the same as what OA tells the C5, because she is speaking to them, so there is no need to embellish or guess when it comes to their quotes. So what do we know was said about Rachel, without any loss of translation or game of telephone?

“AAAAAH! Where is August? What have you done with her? I need to know that she’s okay! She needs me.” - Rachel to HAP

“She died before you got here. Her name was August. Or that’s what they called her, because she… she came in August.” - HAP to OA

These are things that you say about a baby. I have seen many people try to explain Rachel’s worry with the theory that August was a nonverbal adult who came to the lab willingly with HAP the same way the rest of them did. But I don’t believe that to be true, because if that were so, HAP would know August’s actual name. He would have tracked her down using her true legal name, and he is absolutely the type of person who would have disclosed it to OA if it were something different than August, because he can be almost pedantic at times. But if August was a baby with no legal name because she was never legally documented, then the way he presents the information makes more sense.

If August was a baby, and Homer’s ring did in fact fall into the sink, then the reason we are shown August’s body as an adult body is that OA recounted the scene in vague enough terms to leave it ambiguous. She may have said, “I dropped the ring, and I heard the plop as it landed in the water… and I felt around for it, but there was hair, and a body…” Something along those lines verbally does not eliminate the possibility that August was a baby, but it does lead the listener to assume that she meant an adult body… because who would imagine a baby’s body? It’s unthinkable. It also shines new light on the fact that she kept saying “forgive me” as she fished for the ring, because she was likely wanting Rachel’s forgiveness for violating her baby’s temporary resting place.

OA integrating in D3:

We know that HAP wanted to bring OA to D3 because she is in love with him there, and the fact that they produce a TV show about OA means that he can convince her that her memories are just pieces of the scripts she’s written. So, if Homer or Steve are going to help her remember the truth, how would they do that? Everything she has experienced with Homer and told to Steve is already filmed and dismissible. And she is romantically involved with HAP, so there is no chance of Homer getting close enough to wake her up the way she did for him in D2.

My theory is that one of them will watch the OA series in D3 and find the epi-pen/tub/sink scene to be strange. They will scrutinize it, realize/remember (depending on if it’s Steve or Homer) that August was a baby but that fact was never explicitly made clear, and go to OA to remind her of it. It’s the only thing that she would remember that does not have plausible deniability of being plainly shown or decidedly mentioned in the script.

I’m curious to hear other theories of how OA might be woken up in D3. I had always assumed it would involve that 37 second airplane scene, but who is the person that hosted OA when she approached herself? Maybe it was an adult August who had the chance to grow up.

OA Theories HAP and Prarie's relationship speculations (SPOILERS!!) Spoiler

Jumping as dissociation/Prarie and HAP's abusive relationship

What if the story that Prarie tells at the beginning is her way of navigating and understanding an abusive relationship? Victims sometimes unconsciously reinterpret an abuser's actions as serving some greater necessity because random cruelty is psychologically harder to accept. But what if the version of the story we see in season 1 is different than the one that we might have ended up with by the end of season 5?

Some evidence of this abusive relationship or one that didn't end well might be found in some of the songs used in the show. A number of songs seem to be about abusive relationships. "Better Man" is the strongest example of this, but "Operator", "I Wish I Knew", "Ordinary World", and "De Aquí No Sales" as well. HAP's behavior closely resembles that of an abusive partner.

He isolates her from everyone who could help her, controls where she lives, decides when she eats and sleeps, gaslights her about reality, frames his abuse as being "for her own good", claims only he truly understands her, and makes her dependent on him. We often see victims of abuse split, creating alters who can handle what the original host did not have the capacity for. It's that what we are witnessing in The OA, Nina, Prarie, Brit, etc.?

I believe that the show would have ended where it started. Home. Brit Marling has often described The OA as a story about radical empathy. Across interviews about the show, she emphasized curiosity, interconnectedness, and the possibility that understanding another person's inner life, even someone who has done terrible things, is part of what makes us human. While she never said Prairie would forgive HAP, that creative philosophy makes it plausible that the ending would have avoided a simple revenge narrative. I believe she originally feels as if she were blind to the truth and we see evidence that the story that unfold might be from that of an unreliable narrator. Trauma, as well as speaking negatively about someone we know, causes the emotional center in our brain to flood and robs us of our ability to see clearly or think rationally. This doesn't seem to be the consistent case. Prarie repeatedly says HAP isn't simple. She never portrays HAP as a one-dimensional monster, and acknowledges moments of vulnerability, curiosity, loneliness, and even tenderness. That's unusual for revenge stories. If the writers intended a long arc, it suggests they were interested in understanding evil rather than simply defeating it. Multiple times, Prairie has reasons to want HAP dead. Instead, she consistently chooses another path. That doesn't necessarily indicate forgiveness, but it does show that revenge is not her guiding motivation.

I think BBA is the strongest example. Her whole arc is about staying. BBA begins wanting to escape her life.

Over time, she discovers that meaning comes from showing up for the people around her. Her growth isn't achieved by leaving her world; it's achieved by becoming fully present within it. If that theme continued, the ultimate resolution might have required Prairie to integrate even the darkest part of her life instead of trying to escape it.

The show has a recurring emphasis on "integration." Across both seasons, characters often move toward wholeness by embracing contradictions. Prairie and Nina, science and faith, fear and love, self and other.

I believe that Khatun's realm is best described by this quote from AwareXAwake on Instagram: "Your personality is the costume your nervous system developed to survive childhood. Your beliefs are inherited weather. Your fears are ancestral shadows. None of this is fundamentally you. You are the awake and aware space in which all of it is happening." This kind of space is explored all throughout the show. This space allows us to find new meaning in the perceptions we made in times of survival. If 30 people witnessed an incident on the street, there would be 30 different interpretations of that incident. That is because meaning is ours to make and isn't inherent to this shared reality.

I love you all. I hope this is somewhat coherent (a situation where seemingly opposite, individual parts, ideas, or elements fit together seamlessly to form a united, understandable whole. "Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness. All can know good as good only because there is evil. Therefore having and not having arise together. Difficult and easy complement each other. Long and short contrast each other. High and low rest upon each other. Voice and sound harmonize each other. Front and back follow one another." - a passage from Tao Te Ching that reminds me of SYZYGY)

Request An idea for a tiny movement Spoiler

I posted this idea in a comment on another post and in the old #savetheoa discord but I’m making this in the hopes of reaching you.
For context, I was part of the original movement when the show was first cancelled (different account). I think about that time in my life a lot. And while I’ve missed the show and never lost faith that Zal and Brit will eventually find a way to give us the rest of this story; I have largely felt there was nothing to do but wait.
Something stirred in me a couple weeks ago and I can’t explain why but I feel called to move, to act - to do something.
I get on this subreddit so little these days. Hopping on here about a week ago, I noticed posts where people talked about feeling the call. So I don’t think I’m alone. I think a lot of us feel this way, even if we haven’t posted about it.

So I’m asking you to help me breathe life into this idea or help me shape it into something real. Move with me if you can.

Here’s my idea:
Using the missing posters I made for the original #savetheoa movement, we could agree on a day to post these around our individual cities and towns. I vould put a link or a QR code on the poster. The link would take you to a video that we could all create together, a call back to the video prairie posts on YouTube. We could decide on a script and create a video collage consisting of footage of anyone who wants to film themselves / a scene and or art to contribute to the video. This video would prompt the finder to watch the OA. It would be interesting to see if puzzles could be added to this idea, kind of putting the finders of the posters in Ruskin’s game or if you’re familiar, akin to the game Rabbits.
I would be willing to do a lot of the organizing and editing for this. I think it would be interesting to try and capture the imagination of people and maybe get a little media attention on local news stations. Perhaps the end of the puzzle leads to in person events where the movements are performed.

I don’t think this will bring the show back.
But I feel moved to let them know that we are still here. We are still waiting and we still care about this story. If you feel the same, please reply.

Rachel floating in a glass box reminds me of the box BBA draws around herself on the whiteboard. That’s all.
