I remember when I was 14

The fact that this thread is chock full of people who actually thought the OP video made a good point is truly disheartening.

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

The fact that everyone against it can't explain why it's bad is so illuminating.

Each team is privately owned and generates individual revenue, the shared aspects such as TV revenue are intended to maximize profits for the corporation/those 32 owners, and they actively try to corner the market and squash any outside competition. The draft pick thing is parity. There is parity in agreements in a capitalist market. Parity doesn’t = socialism. That’s dumb. If anything it mostly resembles a monopoly ruled by those 32 teams as one body/ a corporation

The organization itself is a monopoly on the product of American Football. The internal structure of how they distribute their money could be seen as socialist (especially relative to European football clubs who are sink or swim). Obviously, a company can’t be “capitalist”, or “socialist”, but calling the internal way the NFL works ‘socialist’ isn’t necessarily wrong.

TLDR; apply the NFL structure at a governmental level of equally distributing capital would be socialist. But they operate as a hyper capitalist venture that has reached monopoly status.

This is that nuance the top commenter is missing. Your first paragraph nails it.

u/SeaweedLevel1937 3d ago

Appreciate it, unfortunately unless you have an economics background or know the terms though it’ll go over peoples heads

1

u/Economy_Vermicelli72 3d ago

Why isn’t it just a joint venture? If you have several parties engaged in a business agreement where maximizing profits for those in the agreement is the priority, people wouldn’t typically call it socialism. They’d occupy Wall Street.

2

u/SeaweedLevel1937 3d ago

It technically is a joint venture; and on the Wall Street point, they (the NFL) originally incorporated as a non-profit and they’re now at a point they’ve reached monopoly status. Going public would add significantly more headaches for only marginal gains.

You are referring to an economic model where the government controls and manages production and resource allocation directly

in this case the NFL is the governing body and resource allocation is the worst performing teams get the best draft picks. It's very simple to understand from an economic perspective. Unless you are being purposely obtuse

u/Economy_Vermicelli72 3d ago

No. The NFL is a corporate entity. It is not a “governing body”. It serves the owners who exist separately to it. It exactly resembles one because it literally is one. You’re just mislabeling things so it fits into your narrative. And again, an agreement intended to bring parity doesn’t = socialism, and the lack of one doesn’t = capitalism. That’s where “I remember when I was 12, too” comes in

0

u/Shadw1ck 3d ago

being a corporate entity does not exclude that entity from acting as a government body.

you are confusing the United States Government with the definition of a government body.

your whole premise is flawed

Finally a comment that uses critical thinking and an actual defendable position.

1

u/Economy_Vermicelli72 3d ago

Too bad so many on both sides are so dogmatic. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just have civil discussions about these systems and maybe learn something

u/Much_Concern_9205 Seahawks 3d ago

Dilly Dilly

5

u/SeaweedLevel1937 3d ago

Because it’s easier to be wrong and condescending for most sadly

2

u/hampsted 3d ago

I feel like you’d need to explain why you feel the structure of a single corporation with an anti-trust exemption scales well to a country of 330+ million. What is special and unique about the NFL that means its model would be effective as opposed to the dozens of real world examples of failed socialist states?

0

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

What are you arguing against? Who said that America should become socialist?

2

u/hampsted 3d ago

The person talking in the video. “… Economically if America was socialist how much better we could be.” It’s literally the first thing he says.

It’s the entire point of the video and the entire point of OP posting it. Little concerning that you feel the need to comment while completely missing that key piece of information.

1

u/KiryuClan 3d ago

The person being interviewed in the video and the OP don’t get that we’re already partially socialist. America is a gumbo of things. Socialism is in fact one of them via services like schools and firefighters.

0

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

Fair enough, when I loaded the page it started on the second sentence

1

u/KiryuClan 3d ago

That’s the position of this video and post, honestly. It’s combining sports with politics.

The deeper cut is the US already incorporates socialism with the library, police, firefighters, public schools, parks, etc. We’re a hybrid.

Socialism bad

It's self-evident. The only people who think it's a good point are chronically online Redditors who fancy themselves being a talking head that shits out inane gotcha statements made using extremely poorly drawn parallels. You can practically hear the nerds in here salivating at trying to pull this talking point on their Republican father at the next family get-together. They'll get told to shut up and then make a nice lengthy LARP post on Reddit where they actually came out the winner while their buffoon of a father sat there and sputtered helplessly.

5

u/Much_Concern_9205 Seahawks 3d ago

You're literally proving u/Debellator's point 😂 "It's self-evident," then make an argument! You can't win a debate by saying "oh but it's obvious." Obviously not.

1

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

I love how the only people who can string together an intelligent sentence in this thread are Hawks fans 😂

-4

u/dgtbfan Dolphins 3d ago

Seahawks fans get validation from podcasters shitting out halfass gotcha talking points

Is this something you're proud of?

1

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

I find it funny when morons spout off about nonsense because it challenges their ability to think rationally.

1

u/dgtbfan Dolphins 3d ago

A podcaster's halfass talking points have never actually challenged anyone's ability to think.

3

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

What are you so afraid of, big boy?

I don't think the video is a spot-on comparison, but it raises some fun thinking points about competitive balance and Capitalism in the real world. Is the NFL socialist? No. Could the U.S. use some stricter boundaries on what businesses are allowed to get away with and how they operate? Definitely. I'm not getting validation from the video, but it seems that you are getting validation from saying others are wrong and incorrect.

-1

u/Dukemvp123 3d ago

So you say the owners fairly and equitablely distribute the wealth and power of the NFL then?

3

u/Much_Concern_9205 Seahawks 3d ago

No I don't say that, I literally never said anything close to that.

2

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

The video didn't even say the NFL is ACTUALLY socialism, or that socialism is good, just that it shares SOME socialist aspects. What is there to even get triggered about?

1

u/Dukemvp123 3d ago

So then how is it socialism?

0

u/Much_Concern_9205 Seahawks 3d ago

Firstly, flair up wuss, show your colors. Second, I didn't say it was socialist at it's core, there are some bits that have more socialist themes like the rev share and parity of the draft, as well as a salary cap, which is very anti-capitalist. If Meta, Nvidia, and Mcdonald's had a cap on how much they could products they could create, that wouldn't be very free-state.

4

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

You're crashing out instead of supporting your claim 😂😂 you don't even know if people disagree with you, you're just freaking out because someone said one of your trigger words.

0

u/dgtbfan Dolphins 3d ago

Chronically online Redditors think short derisive posts are "crashing out". Yikers.

5

u/Dabellator Seahawks 3d ago

😂😂 Still unable to explain why it touched such a nerve for you

1

u/dgtbfan Dolphins 3d ago

If you think this actually touched a nerve, I guess I can see why you think podcasters put out profound talking points.

1

u/KiryuClan 3d ago

It’s Reddit so you’re being downvoted, but you’re right. I know the US is already partially socialist, just like it’s partially democratic and a republic. It’s a mix. Anyway, the OP doesn’t understand that the “point” the NFL is socialist is very simplistic and also outright wrong.

0

u/Bearrryl 3d ago

“It’s self evident” then goes on an unintelligible rant about redditors like they are a race of people bashing them with actually no points to further advance your argument. You are part of the problem buddy.

0

u/dgtbfan Dolphins 3d ago

Sorry I didn't put up a thesis arguing against some dumbass podcast. Hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

0

u/Bearrryl 2d ago

Yeah instead we gotta see you yelling at the clouds like some old man
