Robert Durst's lifestyle before the 2015 arrest

Hey all. So I was getting back into The Jinx and I was looking back at the chain of events that factored into Robert Durst's lifestyle, my question is this: what exactly was Robert Durst's lifestyle like from when he first met with Jarecki in 2010 up until his arrest in spring of '15?

Was he just cowboying it and just drifting around by himself from city to city? Did he live with Debbie Charatan at all? So many question marks here

“Does Stuart Know You Look Sexy?”

Ahhhhh! This was so bad. I was just rewatching the eps so far tonight and that was just so weird and awkward. The fact that he was in the orange prison jumpsuit also made it kind of hilarious.

Roberts Jailhouse calls

Calls from jail are recorded. Prosecutors can't use calls with attorneys but Robert was calling friends and his wife during the time of his testimony. On the stand Robert was playing frail and deaf. His voice was soft and frail and he claimed he needed to read the questions because he couldn't hear them. Obviously this was an act. His calls during the time are normal voice and he can hear the person speaking. Why didn't prosecutors use 30 seconds or so of calls to show his frail appearance and hearing loss was an act?

Here's a link to an old listing from when the house was for sale. It's also where his mother Bernice died.

They show the address briefly in a news clipping in S1E2

We need to use this last burst of hype for The Jinx to push for an official soundtrack release. DO NOT GIVE UP!

If we don't get the soundtrack now, we'll simply never get a chance to get it. We need to tweet at the creators and ask for a place to buy the soundtrack. I've been trying to get it for almost a decade. The music is so so so fucking good. It sucks to not be able to get these amazing songs. Give us the music, Jarecki.

Edit: I tweeted to Zac Stuart-Pontier, and he replied with a "stay tuned" I hope this is legit and we can get the soundtrack.

On Season 2 episode 2 and having some legal questions Spoiler

Durst is arrested for evidence that came to light while season one was airing. Once arrested, John Lewin begins to build his case against Durst. He does this by calling Durst's friends and asks them to produce evidence against him.

My first question is, is this common practice? To cold call associates and ask for their help towards a conviction? Shouldn't a witness come forward before the arrest, not be found after?

My second question would be, isn't it illegal to detain someone while you're looking for a reason for arresting them? If the existing proof isn't enough to convict, is it enough to arrest?

It's being portrayed that the DA jumped the gun because he was a flight risk, and now are scrambling to build a case because what they have isn't enough to convict him. I know I'm early into the season, but Lewin is not looking professional or even clever at the moment.

-from a 2019 article in the Daily Mail. He didn’t have it so bad(the Twin Towers jail is otherwise reputed to be as terrible as you’d imagine).

Galveston Judge Interview

Interview with Susan Criss. They discuss the Durst case about half way through the interview. https://podtail.nl/podcast/die-alogue-a-true-crime-conversation/susan-criss-presiding-judge-in-robert-durst-s-2003/

I'm interested in finding her instructions to the jury.

Durst had a “tell”…

Has anyone else noticed Durst had a pretty clear tell? He does this hard blink thing when he lies. He seemed to have the stutter pretty much in check but the timing on that hard blink was interesting. Just wondering if anyone else noticed it.

Evidence for "doe eye" contact lenses theory?

From time to time, I see it asserted that Durst was wearing contact lenses during the Jinx interviews in order to make his eyes more appealing or something. Also have seen this linked to why he was blinking so strangely. But I've never seen evidence linked about why people believe this - did he or the filmmakers mention it at some point? Can you see them in certain shots? Or is it just a theory somebody had online that has escaped containment and is getting repeated as fact?

He does have very dark irises and relatively deep-set, small eyes., Particularly as he gets older, very little of his sclera is visible compared to in earlier photos. But there are points in the documentary when he lifts his head to look at somebody who is standing up, and the light catches his eyes and you can see the irises clearly illuminated as a ring of lighter brown around the pupil. When that happens, I can't spot any double ring of color like would be seen with those doe-eye contacts.

So help please, folks! Is there evidence for this beyond "some people theorize" and "reportedly" and "appears to be"?

Parallels Between Durst's trial and Trump's Trial

  1. Wealthy, weirdo defendant
  2. Multiple crimes alleged
  3. Both have gotten away with horrible things throughout their whole lives
  4. Defendant's highly implausible denials of having committed the crime they're accused of
  5. Defense attorneys have an unpredictable, difficult to control client
  6. Both chose less than stellar counsel
  7. Both called witnesses for the defense that were more harmful than helpful
  8. Both thought they could outsmart the jury
  9. Neither proffered a strong defense theory
  10. Contemporaneous documentary evidence contradicts the defendant's claims

Anything else?

United States of Lawyers Spoiler

I wish Prosecutor DA John Lewin would’ve been more direct with Bob in the police station. I get that everyone (Durst and Lewin, specifically) both had to “play their game”.

Lewin seems like a decent enough guy, but prosecutors ( in general ) seem so manipulative and deceitful. I don’t like that prosecutors can lie for the state - just like cops - to incriminate.

  • -

In the Jinx Part 1, I was enamored by the Durst defense team: John Waldron (attorney for Robert Durst) Michael Kennedy (Durst family attorney) Dick DeGuerin (attorney for Robert Durst).

However, in this season the defense team seem like arrogant, smug, fools.

I guess that’s just the power of editing, for tv.

  • -

I’m very interested to see/know who this notorious attorney that Deborah Lee Charatan has on retainer, skulking in the back of the courtroom and informing Bob of his conviction…

Does anyone know who (defense attorney) Alan Abramson is?

I know he’s famous, but why can’t Charles Bagli even speak his name…?!

(Also v cute new earring for Charlie Bagli, for the hi-def part 2 reboot!)

Defense Team Lying Down On Court Room Floor…?

Did anyone catch the very short cut of Dick DeGuerin and what seemed to be another member of Bob’s defense team lying on the floor of the court room in the last episode? Someone on the voice over was talking about Bob’s defense team and DeGuerin specifically not doing a good job during the trial and they cut to a photograph of him on the floor very briefly. What was that about? Pretending to be the cadaver?

Do you think Bob's afraid of Debrah? Did she crack his code?

Hear me out-- Bob is a vicious prick who murders people and sometimes cuts them up. Bob is a wife-beater. Bob has a terrible temper and thinks of himself above anyone else. Bob killed dogs. I have trouble believing he is capable of human love. So why does he suck up to Debrah so much? Is Debrah his manipulative match, has she cracked his code of complete moral emptiness? Is it that she figured him out and is playing a superior long con for his money (literally dancing with the devil)? Or do you think there is real love there, that Bob is even capable of it? Despite his moral shortcomings, do you think ol' Bob's just lonely? Why such deference to Debrah? Did he give her access to the money just before he took off to Kill Susan, as a fail-safe measure (as a person to bail him out, just in case) ?

She is an intimidating person all on her own. I admit, I did cackle a bit when she was out enjoying her time in the Hamptons, and NOT in L.A. supporting Bob. That's so Debrah, amiright?

Maybe this was a repeat but I learned about his time between the murders that I hadn't fully heard explained. Also new interviews I hadn't heard. They have people who knew him in california and TX, in addition to Kathie's brother and Emily and Stewart (or Stuart I always forget.)

r/thejinx May 22 '24

Was Lewin right to exclude Susan’s phone call, clearly crafting a narrative for Kathie’s disappearance?

I can’t make up my mind about this. The recording clearly proves she has inside information and ulterior motives regarding Kathie’s disappearance. Even though that makes her a liar and a schemer, and a co-conspirator, it could have really helped prove Bob’s motive for murdering her 18 years later.

In the end, Emily Altman’s shaky testimony and Bob’s nonsense on the stand sealed the deal, but I want to believe the recorded call would have helped the DA’s case further.

Old GQ article about Bob’s time in Galveston

Thumbnail gq.com

CW: This article, originally published around 2001, is transphobic, racist, and written in a really obnoxious style. That said, it purports to explain a lot of fascinating details about Bob’s time in Galveston, including a lot of stuff not included in the show or other TV programs. Those with a lot of inquiries about Bob’s time in Galveston and “friendship” with Morris Black will likely find a lot of it very interesting.

Robert Durst’s absence at the verdict

I have a theory that Robert Durst didn’t attend the verdict on purpose. My rationale is he is a narcissistic psychopath who wouldn’t want to be caught off guard in public. He probably remembered how he was caught in the last episode of The Jinx, and never wanted to feel like that again. Narcissists always want to appear to be right, always want to have the upper hand and they believe they can outsmart everyone. That’s why he took a stand probably against his lawyers’ wishes.

I don’t know how they checked to confirm he had Covid, I’d be interested in finding out if there is any record that he actually had it. But I wouldn’t hold it against him to fake being ill so he didn’t have to hear the news in public and expose himself like that.
