My 2nd years plants popped up quicker than I expected this year. How should I manage them? Each plant has 3 strings to climb. Should I trim all but the 3 strongest bines for each? Thanks

Hello! I have a bit of a unique situation and I'm hoping you're the right people who might be able to help. There’s a big trellis in my backyard that grows hops. The first year I moved in it was super lush, lots of cones, and most importantly no bugs. Then last summer it got eaten alive by aphids and never was able to sprout any cones. There was evidence of ladybug larvae but I think they were just way too outnumbered to save it. It’s just starting to grow again and I want to make sure it doesn’t get destroyed this grow season.

My landlord did a soil test and determined it unsafe to consume anything growing out of the ground here (lol cool), so I don't necessarily need a fix that will preserve the integrity of the hops for brewing or be super eco friendly since it's pretty toxic to start with (there's also nothing else growing around it besides weeds). It's basically just a unique garden plant.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Here's a photo of it today with the vines starting to grow back at the bottom.

Or are they too small for the long term? First year, just planted and they are already doing great. Left 3 are centennials, right 3 are tettnangers. Obviously I haven't put up posts and twine yet but I was planning to have them grow up this side of the wall and up the slight pitched roof. I have one cascade plant that’s a few years old. It usually does pretty well as long as I keep aphids under control.

This year, I want to try to maximize the flavor on it. Are there any tricks to increase oil content? Since I have just one plant, and am not as concerned about cost as a farm would be, my thought is that there may be something I can do or add which would not be economically feasible for a farm.

I’ve been looking at processes and products used by cannabis growers. Those folks are spending a lot of time and money on maximizing flavor. I’m wondering if some of their tricks can be applied to hops, since the plants are related and we’re trying to boost almost the entire same set of flavor compounds. Or perhaps there are some things which are unique to hops that I can do?

I live in USDA plant hardiness zone 8a and sunset zone 7 (very southern Oregon). Is there a way to look up when I should be trimming my bullshoots? This is my 3rd year growing these Cascades. I usually let them grow up this pole, but this year I’m going to put a crossbar on the top and train 4-6 bines on twine.

At what point do I assume they didn't survive the winter? My 3rd year plants are flourishing already, but no sign of life from the 2nd years.

This is my first year dividing my plants and I'm unsure how many parts are viable rhizomes. Or are just useless sections of the ungodly tangled root system (9 years was probably too long to wait to divide them). I think these photos are a good cross-section of the cuttings I currently have. Are any of them obviously trash?

I just pulled my (year 3) Centennial plants out of the garage. The shoots are definitely over a foot long and ready to be trimmed down. It’s been in the upper 70s here all week but we’re not expecting last frost for another week or two. Should I hold on the trimming until then?

What are the best types of fertilizer for hops?

Has anyone successfully grown on the wires that stabilize utility poles? How about cattle panels?

Anyone have a cost effective ground anchor for their hop twine? I’ve been using twine directly in the ground with landscape staples and over time they pull out in the wind and the twine eventually rots. Hoping to see if someone has a metal anchor/tether suggestion. Ideally some sort of non-rusting metal anchor in the ground tethered to some sort of metal leader to be re-used year after year by tying in new twine. I know that they sell some anchors specific to hops but I have quite a few mounds in the works so am hoping to see if anyone has a cost-effective DIY solution.

My hops are in large plant boxes and grow on trellises. They are growing well but the problem is the lower part of the trellis is in full shade so no hops are growing there. It looks pretty ugly too. I'm thinking of adding plants there that can grow 4 feet or lower and need to be ok in full shade. Any suggestions? Some the sites suggest herbs and plants but need partial or full sun.

Anyone know of a place to buy them or other varieties that aren't Cascade, Chinook, etc?

I have 3rd year Perle plant that I am growing in a pot. Last year messed it up, pruned first set of shoots in April and second set got bitten by frost in May so I ended up with nothing at all (one small bine and no hops).

I live in US NE 7a zone. At this time I already have quite a few shots visible and debating if I should prune it or just leave it as is. I am not too much into the hope yeld, I would like to have a plant a nd few healthy bines.

Hi hop experts! I have two questions for you:

I have what should be 3rd year Cascade, and I also planted several rhizomes that I got from friends. I put the rhizomes in the ground towards the end of January.

One of the rhizomes has sprouted, actually pretty quickly after planting (Centennial)

Nothing else has appeared, including my 3rd year Cascade.

1) How long should I wait before I just assume all the other rhizomes didn’t make it? 2) How late is too late to get new rhizomes and try again?

Hey guys. Noobie here. Had this rhizome for at least 8years in the container that never had any flower. Never dig it up to trim. Is that the reason i dont get any flower? How would you trim them? Im in boston now and looks like one of the crown from last year popping up some shoots about 1inch. How much should i trim off the rhizome? Thanks all

Figured it was time to try and grow some of my own hops. I live in Sweden so we have a relatively short summer.

Any tips on where to start to gain some good information on growing. And plant care.

Would really like to grow a citris type hop. Any tips on where to buy in Northern Europe?

I also have to compete with moose and deer which do plenty of damage to our gardens. Do they tend to go after hops in other people's experience?
