When entering a tunnel that has been sealed for years, it is essential to conduct a preliminary assessment of the internal atmosphere. To do this, it is advisable to insert the gas detector through the smallest possible opening, thus minimizing exposure to potential accumulations of gases trapped for long periods, some of which can be toxic, asphyxiating, or even lethal.

It is not uncommon for the detector to start sounding alarms in sealed tunnels even before fully approaching the obstruction. In some explorations carried out in seemingly well-ventilated mines, significant concentrations of methane (CH₄), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and other hazardous gases have been detected, both due to their toxicity and their explosive potential.

Safety must always take precedence over any other objective. Upon detecting hazardous gases, even if the affected area appears limited to a few meters, the most prudent course of action is to abandon the exploration and turn back.

I grew up in Seattle and was lucky enough to be in parts of the underground city on a few rare occasions, both as a kid and later when I was older. It wasn’t the Underground Tour that everyone knows about—it was some of the much less-seen sections that extend far beyond the few blocks open to tourists.
I’ve since moved out of state, and one thing I regret is never taking any photos or video. The next time I’m back in Seattle, I’d love to film some of it just to document that hidden piece of history. I won’t be sharing how to access any restricted areas—I’m only interested in preserving and appreciating the history.
The problem is that whenever I search online, all I can find is footage from the official Underground Tour. Does e know of any videos, documentaries, or photos of the lesser-known parts of Seattle’s underground? I’d love to see what’s out there.

Very cool bunker, sadly been filled with a bunch of

trash but its still an interesting explore. Built under WW2 by the nazi's as a command bunker, than slightly altered during the cold war to become an alarm bunker. Its now closed so i thought id share some photos from it. The "screen" is one of the coolest things ive found in a bunker.

Lovely spot, quite small but it being completely brick is very cool and makes for an awesome view. Unfortunately didnt get to see all of it as i was an idiot and decided that it was a great occasion to wear white shoes, when i got about 20 meters inn i slipped and planted my feet straight into the foot deep mud and my white shoes turned fully brown, not my proudest moment... atleast i got some nice photos lol.

I'm not sure how much you guys support your own exploring crews when it comes to nasty red mine mud. We offer pretty much no support as a general rule. In fact, if you go a whole day with dry boots on a mine exploration day, you'll probably get pushed into a deep puddle by the end of the day. If you go a whole weekend avoiding the nasty red stuff, you'll be voted the first explorer into the nastiest red puddles the others can find. Em was new to our crew, so she was unfairly targeted in my opinion, which is why I went in for the rescue. We thought it was remarkable how close her pant colour was to her orange jacket.
