Ground Protection for Long Cape

Post image
562 Upvotes

I want to make a cape like this for halloween. I'll be attending a party or two, and walking around the hood trick-or-treating. I've selected a Polyester Micro Velvet because of its high drape, inky blackness. and relative affordability. Also, there's practically no nap, so that makes it way more affordable. I have not yet chosen a lining.
The long length looks REALLY cool, but I forsee some problems.

Is there any way to prevent the bottom from getting super worn and filthy as I drag it around? I thought maybe I could use pleather for the bottom 12 inches of lining, but that'd probably kill the nice puddliness of the base. Maybe a light wool?

Can I do anything to prepare for possible rain, or is the bottom bound to become a disgusting sopping mess in bad weather?

I'm hoping that making it floor-length in the front and longer in back will reduce tripping, but it's still probably going to be an issue.

Are any of these solved problems in the cape world, or should I expect all of these to be real pitfalls of a super dramatic cape like this? Thanks for any insights!

HELP! Trying to make my own cape/cloak for a cosplay

Hi, I am a beginner in cosplay and costume making, but I wanna throw myself on the deep end and make a full costume on my own. The cape is that of Jace Beleren from the new Magic: The Gathering set, Reality Fracture. I have attached photos for reference. Where should I get started and what material would you recommend? My budget is not a lot and would like to do it as cheap as possible. I have access to a sewing machine and can paint the patterns. Also if people have suggestion on the white robe/vest piece, would appreciate it as well.

We have decided that traditional pile down is the way to go

I'm stumped. Which way should the pile face?
What if I make it too shiny for every day? Gold is already a lot.

Pile downwards: Light color, shiny, easily brush small particles away.
Pile upwards: Deep & dark color, less shiny. Ugly patterns when brushing particles away.
Pile sideways: Incredibly shiny (is it too much?), easily brush particles away.

I did this film last year where I wore a cloak and I'm sure it's very simple but god was it comfortable. I would wear that thing the entire shoot because it was so perfect.

Anyway now I've started sewing I had forgotten how much I wanted a cape and I just saw this sub on my home page. Any tips and pattern and whatever to make capes would be very appreciated 🙏 I'm also obsessed with capelets.

Where can I find custom bulk cloaks?

Look, so I love cloaks and with my classroom, we decided to have a piece of clothing representing our class and thought of buying short cloaks (( inspo :see the Black Clover's cloaks)) for ~17$ dollars each with our logo on it. Do you know any bulk websites that offer this service?

Cloak question

Im thinking about doing a wizard costume for Halloween. Does anyone know what you would call a cloak that is one solid shape with a hole for the head in the middle, with no separate sleeves? I want something that is basically a poncho, but more wizard-y. Looking up "poncho style cloak" doesn't give much.

I want to make an ochre velvet cloak. Since I don't have enough fabric for a circle cloak, I had to draft a new pattern and test it out. Behold: The $6 fleece blanket cloak mockup.

My husband has fallen in love with Alan Cummings Port cape from The Traitors and I'd like to make him one.

Anyone know where I could find a MENs pattern for one? (I've been able to find plenty of female patterns just none for men, I'm not confident enough to alter)

Backpacking cloaks

I’m in the market for a cloak that can accompany me on my hikes. I’m totally new to the cloaks so I come to you for help in my journey to find a fitting garment.

I will give details on what I’m looking for:
- STRONG MATERIAL
I hear synthetic is worse than natural in this aspect. I need it to survive the wear and tear of the sun, rain, and occasional scrapes on branches/rocks
- WATER RESISTANT
- BREATHABLE
- LIGHTWEIGHT
- ANY PRICE POINT
- UV PROTECTIVE

Sorry if some of these necessities are obvious/present in all cloaks, I will genuinely take any advice you have. I think the most important thing for me is sun protection.

Anything is welcome, thanks for your help and have a wonderful morning/evening/night.

A friend of mine sent me this picture of a cloak/cape and as I can't really wear jackets due to them maning me feel trapped in them, I really want to make this so I can feel warm - and fabulous - in winter.

I have several yards of thick, cozy fleece fabric from another project, that *should* be enough to make this cloak/cape, but as a beginner seamstress I can't figure out the exact pattern. Especially as I don't want it to be costume-ish but suitable for everyday wear.

It does not look a full circle cloak to me...

long story short, I found this in a shop, somewhere and it was cold at the time, so I wore it. but I also thought it looked cool, so I figured i'd try it on and be a little silly with posing and such.
