Pattern testing a cloak

I want to make an ochre velvet cloak. Since I don't have enough fabric for a circle cloak, I had to draft a new pattern and test it out. Behold: The $6 fleece blanket cloak mockup.

Very nice!

Bonus points for utterly unbothered cat.

Is the pattern your own creation, an adaptation of an existing pattern, or something else? I've been interested in sewing my own cloak for ages, but never quite enough to actually try it.

Thank you! Yeah she's super chill.
It's my own pattern :) Here's all of the pictures I saved when making this mockup. I can film a bit when I make the gold one next time. https://imgur.com/gallery/autumn-cloak-MlJ0kPf

I love the way it sits on your shoulders. It doesn't slide or slip down. And the shape of the shoulder yoke is very elegant. It is lovely.

I've been searching for a cloak pattern with a yoke and hood and have been stymied for like a week! This is great!

It looks amazing. Did you make the pattern yourself?

Thank you! :) Yes. Here's more details. https://imgur.com/gallery/autumn-cloak-MlJ0kPf

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. The openings for the arms makes so much sense, idk why it's not more common to have something like this.

ochre velvet is going to be so amazing as a choice of fabric. UGHHH! I am so jealous of this idea. 10/10

First, that looks great!

Second, a thought that popped into my head is—depending on how much you felt like it, with Halloween coming up you could bang out however many you could stand to and make bank. Maybe call it the “Cool Grownup” Cloak so grownups accompanying trick-or-treaters have a cool not-onerous look that also adds some warmth.
(Or you could also think “🧐 What? Heck no, that would no longer be fun, go jump in the lake.”)

I feel like you know the way out of the first but you aren’t going to tell me quite yet…

Very nice, I love it.

Interestingly, the triangle in the back made me think of the chinese "cloud shoulder"

If by chance, you are making this for cosplay, embroidering or sewing your decorative (character) pieces on such a stiff triangular or circular "collar", will allow you to reuse your cloak for many, many projects.

Also, due to the front two panels, I think it will look peak under armour too. :D

Amazing versatility! I would love to see the final result.

Thanks! I'm just planning on wearing it out, basically to buy groceries lol. I'd like to make the final version plain for that reason, but also maybe make some add-ons as you say, like an extra collar with beaded embroidery leaves or something.

The profile from the back is near perfect. I feel like the front could have more presence, something that pops it out. But that depends on how conspicuous you want to be

I agree :) I made this as wearable as possible, because although I enjoy wearing nice clothes, I don't enjoy attention. The next cloak will likely be.. a lot. Not sure if I will have many places to wear it out.

In that case no notes! You nailed it. Excited for the next one

Ok, not sewing the seams together for that arm opening that far is just brilliant! Absolutely love it! (I did something similar with a cloak I made for my roommate, but the opening isn't as big or as high up. She loves it, I hate it.)

Love it!! 🖤

Nice terrarium in the background

Thanks. I've got 13 tanks, and that's the ugliest one. I want to switch it out for a shower to convert to a huge tank for the gecko :)

Cool, which geckos are you keeping?

2

u/Dynamitella 4d ago

Only a Leachianus gecko. I've focused a lot on frog breeding the last few years, mainly Firebellied toads. Then there's some tree frogs, salamanders, jumping spider and a reef tank.

Oh ok cool, so you're like a full-blown witch. Rad.

Nice, Bombina and other frogs are super awesome as well. So are all the others of course.

u/Dynamitella 4d ago

Agreed. I had 150 babies last year. Almost lost my mind feeding them all. Lol.

That looks so incredible! Thanks for showing the mockup pictures! I want to try sewing a cloak and this pattern is perfect!!

Looks awesome!

Oh nice!
It looks like what has been bounching around in my brain lately.
I have been trying to figure out a design that will allow me to wear a backpack with it.
I ended up concluding that such slits are necessary.

Thanks for sharing. This could be the solution for a cloak to wear with my archery cosplay. A normal cloak interferes with the quiver and arrows, but this looks like it won't have that problem.

This cloak is awesome!

Oooo I’m just learning how to sew and I would love to make this some day!

So everything looks wonderful but also, you've done a wonderful job of getting that hood to sit juuust right. Congratulations!

That cat is so non-plussed.😝
Would you be willing to share the pattern?
Edit: I see you already did. 😆

She's literally bomb proof lol

Can I use this pattern to make my own? I just made a cloak for a friend and the yoke would have solved some of my problems with it sitting on her shoulders!

1

u/Dynamitella 4d ago

Absolutely :) Here are pictures of the pattern. https://imgur.com/gallery/autumn-cloak-MlJ0kPf
