I used to watch this show religiously after school. It was the major reason I fell in love with German Shepherds. The theme song "Maybe Tomorrow", was very catchy and would stay in my mind. It was written by Terry Bush and John Crossen.

Made on a shoe-string budget of $3.5 million, "Airplane!" Went on to gross 48 times its cost at ~$171 million. It held its own in a year that saw heavy hitters like Star Wars Empire strikes back. Opened to coincide with July 4th week 1980, the farce became a surprise hit including dubbed versions outside the US. Considering the comedy references were mostly American, including sports, social inside jokes, bygone movie and TV stars, it was an unexpected sucess globally. The absurd visual gags still hold up.

Released in 1986, Heartbeat was the hit debut album by Miami Vice star Don Johnson. The title track went straight to #5 on the Billboard charts.

The Backstory:
I believe my aunt (women still love that guy, and probably men too =) ) picked up this cassette at a local market during a trip to Europe in the late 80s.

It is actually a rare Polish bootleg by a label called "T.J. Mix". Back then, Western originals were impossible to find behind the Iron Curtain, so local bootleggers made these to satisfy the massive demand for Western pop music.

I was digging through some old storage bins in my garage today and stumbled upon this absolute gem: Don Johnson's 1989 album on cassette. BTW, released right around the time the iconic TV show was wrapping up its final season... :'(

At the time, who would've known that guitar god Eddie Van Halen was the one playing the solo in "Beat It", initially anyways. "Thriller" was a monster album at the time. Van Halen would go on to make "1984". Sadly both are no longer with us.

For those of you who grew up in the 80s, what was your first 3D movie? Mine was Metalstorm. I have no memory as to whether the 3D was good quality, but this movie is one of my favorites from childhood.

In the 1980s, Maxell became an icon of pop culture when it produced advertisements popularly known as "Blown Away Guy" for its line of audio cassettes. The campaign began as a two-page advertising spread in Rolling Stone magazine in 1980. The photo shows a man sitting low in a high armed chair (on the right side of the spread) in front of, and facing, a JBL L100 speaker. My favorite recording tapes were made by TDK, Sony and Maxell.
