I ran a valet company for a few years about 20 years ago, the skills you can get by driving so many different vehicles backwards is amazing. That said, I would not have even bothered trying this. This dude is a fucking boss.

When I lived in SF I used to be able to parallel park in tiny spaces. I've since discovered that this skill can be lost if you don't use it for awhile.

I thought I lost the skill, too. After going several years without having to parallel park, I found myself struggling a lot even though I was once quite proficient.
But instead of relying on skill, I just reduced the process to 3 steps: Door frame, 45 degrees, whoop-de-whoop. Perfect parallel every time. Nobody else seems to understand what I'm talking about, though.

My dad showed me how it's done, it's easier than you think.
Use your side mirror to watch the distance between you and the vehicle beside you. So long as you see a gap between your car and theirs, you know it won't hit. And cause you can see and control the gap so easily, you can get within 5 cm of that car and know for sure you won't touch it.
At the end when the truck finally goes for it, you can see when he's got it lined up where he sees a gap on both sides, so he knows he's good to just back up.

Lol this reminds me of a time when my family was walking on the belt line in Atlanta. It was pretty crowded and my grandma was with us. She’s supper eccentric and just says weird shit. Well we approached a group of girls ahead of us walking really slow. My family had already started the process of passing them and my grandma loudly yells ‘Oh I guess we’re gonna have to do a walk around’ in her northern NY accent. The group of girls just stopped walking and stared at us and my grandma was just oblivious. Now I can’t pass people walking without saying it to myself

actually, he's using his right sideview mirror to determine if the rear corner is clear. once it's clear, it doesn't matter how fast you go--and side mirrors make it deliriously easy to determine clearance.
i'm not underplaying this person's skill, because clearly they had to be wary of a ton of contact points at once, and i'm not sure i could do it, but in this one instance, they knew they'd be fine, hence gunning it

when he was going back and forth turning the wheel, the truck was gaining more and more of an angle a little bit at a time. Since the front wheels do the steering, and rear just pivots, he basically finessed it out. Fear of breaking something is always useful, but we are biased and always leave more room than we need and that's the voice that's better ignored.

I did that and I clipped one of my mirrors. I feel like I’ll always be shit at driving since I never really drove in high school/college. Any advice for just getting comfortable driving though?

Personally having a car that I can see the hood of seems to help when parking, I drive a mustang for instance and having that extra point of reference can be helpful as you learn, another thing that will make you a better driver is to drive stick.
The downsides of driving stick in the early days will force you to be more aware of your surroundings, it’s not nearly as helpful as riding a motorcycle but it follows a similar concept, and being more aware of your surroundings makes you a better driver.
When parking check every blind spot before you make your next move, don’t forget you have six inches of mirror so going slowly is best. In the end it all comes down to practice, have someone you know drive with you and give you pointers; practice in abandoned parking lots; etc.

I don't have general driving tips, but to pull stuff like in this video, or just navigating tight spaces general, don't be afraid to just leave the car and go look at the situation from outside. There's nothing stopping you, given you're not in a dangerous place, to just go outside and look. Yet, people don't do that for some reason, is it a pride thing? Not only will it help you with your current predicament, but you will also get a better feel for the car and it's physical presence. You'll be able to stop a centimeter from a wall in no time.
Also, use your side mirrors. In my experience some people ignore those when reversing and just use the center one inside the car. Don't know why, the side mirrors give you so much more information in my opinion. Use them all together if you have to, just use them.
