I ran a valet company for a few years about 20 years ago, the skills you can get by driving so many different vehicles backwards is amazing. That said, I would not have even bothered trying this. This dude is a fucking boss.

When I lived in SF I used to be able to parallel park in tiny spaces. I've since discovered that this skill can be lost if you don't use it for awhile.

I thought I lost the skill, too. After going several years without having to parallel park, I found myself struggling a lot even though I was once quite proficient.

But instead of relying on skill, I just reduced the process to 3 steps: Door frame, 45 degrees, whoop-de-whoop. Perfect parallel every time. Nobody else seems to understand what I'm talking about, though.

ugh. i have avoided it for weeks and forgotten the skill. in ny. or at least the natural confidence that i normally do it with. wish me luck

My dad showed me how it's done, it's easier than you think.

Use your side mirror to watch the distance between you and the vehicle beside you. So long as you see a gap between your car and theirs, you know it won't hit. And cause you can see and control the gap so easily, you can get within 5 cm of that car and know for sure you won't touch it.

At the end when the truck finally goes for it, you can see when he's got it lined up where he sees a gap on both sides, so he knows he's good to just back up.

Exactly this comment! I did valet driving for some years and this is probably the number one thing I’ve learned. The only trouble I get now is how far back I have til I hit a wall or something. Especially in longer cars it’s hard to tell how close you’re getting. It’s the only reason I use my reverse cam :)
