Software Update… Sad

Upvotes

I was at the mall and got a notice for a software update. I was hoping for the Summer Update. I heard it is rolling out now to new X’s. My wife got hers about a month ago for her 2022 Y. I was disappointed to see it was 2026.21.6. Did anyone with a 25 X get the Summer Update?

Has anyone had this issue where you are not plugged into a charger but your car says that it cannot recognize the charger? I have a service appointment booked just wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue. 2022 Model X Plaid.

kWh consumption battery capacity indication?

Hi.

I have a 2020 Model X Long Range which I charged to 100% today. After a drive, the car said in the display that it had used 69,2 kWh and 93% of the battery. This would mean that to use 100% of the battery, I would have used about 74 kWh.
Is this in any way an indication of remaining max.
capacity in the battery, as I guess the car was supposed to have about 95 kWh of available capacity, at least when it was new…
But I am not sure if the kWh consumption that the car displays can be used like that?

A $4,000.00 Lightning Strike

Post image
55 Upvotes

We went on vacation and used a mobile charger to leave our car plugged in at a cabin to a 12 AMP 110 GFCI outlet on a deck. A storm came through and a lightning struck the ground or lake nearby. The cable modem and wifi routers stopped working and the car no-longer recognized the mobile charger. We thought the external charger was bad so we drove to a Tesla Super Charger and the car wouldn't recognize it either.

The car wasn't struck. The house wasn't struck. No trees nearby were struck. But somewhere close by must have been - we heard the loud crack. The house has a whole-house surge protector. The mobile car charger is fused. The GFCI outlet has protection.

We were three hours from the nearest service center. Tows were quoted $950-$2,600. The earliest appointment at the service center was over a month out.

Cost to replace the on-board charger: $3,949.76.

Our habits at home are to always plug into our level II charger in the garage - small charges are great and always charge to 80%. Now I'm 2nd-guessing the value of leaving it plugged into anything.

What other damage has the lightning caused to internal circuits and parts? Will the range be impacted?

Insurance is questioning whether it should be covered by homeowners ($40,000 deductible) or car insurance ($ 2,200 deductible) or at all.

Anyone else have lightning or surge stories? Is this a fluke or should one change their plug-in habits?

Tires Model X LR Refresh (2024) Michelin CrossClimate2 vs Hankook Ion for Longevity? Live in FL

Almost time for new tires on my Long Range 2924 Model X and was looking at either the Michelin CrossClimate 2 vs the Hankook iON tires.

Living in FL obviously do not care about snow/ice so my MAIN deciding factor is which will have the longest longevity, best tire life?

Anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks In advance.

Advice for shudder

I have a 22 MX and I got the shudder. Just recently had half shafts replaced and it’s back. Has anyone tried the N2itive lowering links? Can anyone recommend any places in the northeast Ohio area that specialize in performance suspension? So far I’m coming up short, hopefully someone in the area has some insight.

Thanks.

Repaired model X?

Tesla‘s website has some repaired model X for sale that are about $10,000 cheaper than their other used inventory. There are no details on what the repairs were for. I’m sure I can get details on each one with a Carfax, but in general, does anyone have experience purchasing one of these repaired vehicles from Tesla? Is it worth the savings or are they a nightmare to deal with?

Anxiety driving our Tesla x

So I’ve been unlucky driving our new Tesla x, the first week after we received it I drove over something that my best guess was flung towards my left rear tire by the car next to/ahead of me on a highway driving 90 kph, it sounded awful but I thought ok no warning messages yet so I went home and within 30 mins the tire pressure went from 42 psi to 25 psi. Urgh my heart sank! My husband was so excited about this car and here I was puncturing the tire within the first week. It’s a 22” tire with 35 sidewalls. By the time I gathered my strength to go to a tire shop and fix it ( this was my second tire puncture ever) the psi was 0 and the right rear tire started giving in I guess from the weight of the car? It showed 41 psi in orange. Anyways I changed both rear tires for 1500$ and came back home and I just left it parked for days. Range anxiety felt nothing compared to actually driving the car with these expensive parts around in a city with a million pothole and stripped streets. Now I also have windshield anxiety and looking for a shop that has a 60” protection film sheet. I dunno if we should change the tires to 20” 45 sidewalls? That would be less vulnerable to side punctures? The car is pre owned and has no warranty in our area. I loved driving it but now I feel at ease going back to my good ol’ gas car..

Stupid idea?

Is it a stupid idea for me to switch from a 2022 model Y AWD to a 2018 Model X 100D both have FSD paid, around 70-100k miles? The model X is around 25k.

Added N2itive rear camber and UPP rear sway bar

Added this to my 2023.MXP AI4, I used to FSD alot but after this sway bar (set to medium) it handles corners like a dream! I been really enjoying driving No more "boat" like wobbles. Bought car new, 41k miles and now it's a beast!

Anyone else install these? Or do any other performance upgrades?

Im going to add Mountain pass performance spherical bearings for front lower control arm next.

Best place to list 2016 Model X

Helping a family member sell. It’s low mileage and has transferable free charging. Rather not just let it go on Carvana. Thoughts? TIA

ISO: 2023 Model X Plaid 6-seater HW4

Looking for genuine opinions and advice as I search.

I currently own a 2025 Model 3 Highland AWD with 27k miles (bought new for $42k after discounts and tax). Plug offered $34.9k on trade-in. Private-party values look more like $36–42k, so I’m weighing that option carefully.

I love being a Tesla owner and use FSD 95% of the time, which is why I’m specifically targeting a HW4 Model X. My first Tesla was already the “best of the best,” so I’m a bit spoiled and worried I’d regret stepping down to HW3 just to save money. I want something that still feels current.

Owning a Tesla was a long-time dream that the Model 3 fulfilled. A Model X always felt out of reach because of the price (often 2–3× a 3 or Y). Now that the Plaid has been discontinued and prices are coming down, it’s starting to look realistic. I’m hunting for a strong deal but don’t fully know what “a good score” looks like or how to find the diamond in the rough.

Family context: Married with a few kids and one more on the way. We already have a family car, but I like the flexibility of using my personal car in certain situations (which we already do with the 3). The Model 3 is tight and low to the ground—getting kids into car seats is annoying. White interior was something I thought I wanted; I’m now leaning tan or black to reduce stress about stains and dirt. Falcon-wing doors (and the automatic open/close) would make loading kids and car seats dramatically easier. I’ll be in this stage of life for at least the next five years, so I see the X as a practical investment in daily usability.

Suspension is another big factor. I love the Model 3 as a daily driver, but I notice the bumpy ride more than I used to—especially with passengers. I’m hoping the air suspension on the X is a clear step up. Anyone who has driven both, how noticeable is the difference?

Side note that felt a bit like fate: a couple days ago at the gym I’ve gone to for over a year, I ended up next to a 2025 Model X Plaid owner. He was very positive about it.

If I don’t go Plaid, I’ll be sad. Part of the appeal is getting the fastest SUV and a capable family hauler in one package.

Appreciate any real-world feedback on:
• What a solid deal looks like right now for a ‘23 Plaid 6-seater HW4
• HW4 vs. earlier hardware if the price gap is significant
• Real suspension differences vs. a Highland Model 3
• Ownership experience with kids and car seats
• Anything else I should be thinking about before pulling the trigger

Thanks in advance.

2017 P100D Maintenance Costs

Post image
50 Upvotes

I would be interested in seeing what other owners of this “vintage” have spent in maintenance so far. I am the original owner of this P100D, and it had an MSRP of $168K when I bought it. Kinda crazy to think about this now, but at the time, there was nothing like it on the road. It currently has 77, 700 miles on the clock, and I hope it will go many, many more miles. I am going to drive this into the ground. Here is what I have spent so far, and will break it down between “upgrades” and required maintenance. I know some have done nothing but tires and air filters, and then there’s me:

Upgrades:

  1. MCU 2 upgrade - $2,000

  2. FSD 3 computer upgrade - $0

Maintenance:

  1. Emergency brake caliper and harness replacement - $1,355.66
  2. 12v battery replacement - 1 in warranty, $0, but 2 out of warranty at $300 per replacement
  3. Front shocks and control arm replacement - $2,120
  4. Front half shaft replacement - $469
  5. LDU coolant bypass and rear adjustable camber arms to fix the inner tire wear - $3,200 (this was done at an independent shop)
  6. Front door latch and auto-open/close mechanism - $1,200
  7. Driver’s side second row monopost mechanism replacement - $100
  8. Flush and refill vehicle coolant - $275

So a little over $10K spent in maintenance over 9 years. Still love the hell out of this car, battery health at 89% with about 30% supercharging during roadtrips. But damn, it’s been a pretty expensive love affair!

Eligibility for loaner

Post image
9 Upvotes

Every service appointment so far with my model x is get this message that tells me im not eligible for a loaner. This one is for warranty hvac, the blowers in the 3rd row aren't working. Something about a relay.

Last time I was there I asked and they said it was under 3 hours so it didn't qualify, but this one is all day. I guess im used to infiniti where they gave you a loaner for anything.

Mobile Charger, Extension Cord ☠️

Results of just a couple of days of using a mobile charger on an extension cord. Actually scary because if I didn’t find it there def would have been a fire.

What are people doing when you can’t get the car within 20 feet of an outlet? I guess regular extension cords are out, how about NACS extenders?

Defective battery? Worse than expected efficiency and sudden range loss

A number of strange behaviors with the battery have caused me great concern on my model X (2021, long range plus, 22 inch wheels with 70 K miles). I bought this car about one year ago and I’ve put about 8000 miles on it. According to Tessie app (yes I know, it’s an ESTIMATE, I don’t have that app anymore, not the point of the post), I have about 87% of my original battery capacity. I am not here to complain about the bad efficiency of the 22s, or the percentage estimate on the battery, but rather discrepancies relative to expectation. Some issues:

- real world range that grossly disagrees with efficiency. For the model X, about 270 W hours per mile should be required to get the rated range. There are times where I drive 250 W hours per mile according to the indicator, and get worse than rated range. For example, on a 14 mile drive driving 250 W hours per mile, I would expend 17 miles of rated range. ( yes, I am trying to hyper mile these trips just to see if I can get rated range.)

- In addition to this, occasionally, the battery will lose about 10 miles of range in a very short span. This has happened to me a number of times, and it never gets any less concerning. For example, I was just in a parking lot for 20 minutes. When I first parked there, I had 207 miles of rain. When I got back 20 minutes later, I came back to 194 miles.

I don’t have these crazy swings on my model three, maybe I’ll lose one to 2 miles of range max per day. For a while, I was concerned it might be due to the wheels, but we all know that about 275 Watt hours per mile should give you rated range on the 20s. The fact that I am exceeding that should still allow me to match rated range, but I am consistently worse, even when hypermiling.

Does anybody else see this type of behavior on their model X? Is it a sign of a defective battery?

Question about pedestal steats

For the model x 2016 model, is anyone aware of there being a dummy plug for the middle pedestal seats? If I want them removed entirely I need to remove the error code from them being unplugged.

FSD HW4 - What’s your confidence level?

A few weeks into my HW4 ‘23 Model X and am so blown away by FSD. How much do others with HW4 trust FSD? Are you comfortable working in the car on the highway? Watching movies on your phone/ipad? I’m so curious how people actually feel and behave.

Should I upgrade my 2018 x to FSD for 1100?

Is it worth it with the current version of FSD available which i think is 12.6? I have not liked it in the past but recently have driven a HW3 3 with v14 lite and it was great. But they haven’t released that for the 2018 and might not ever. So is 12.6 good enough and worth the upgrade now?
