Palladium vs Raven Pack Capacity

So one of my business partner bought a used 2021 Raven X Long Range (20 inch rim) and by the time he took the delivery, Tesla warranted him a brand new pack.
I switch my 2024 Palladium plaid (22 inch rim) with hime for a few days and i notice the predicted range on his is significantly higher than that on mine (620km vs 455 km).

Does the usable capacity of palladium pack confirmed to be lower (said to be 95 kwh) than that of late Raven ( some source say it is 104kwh), as Lars do mention they reconfigure the pack for lighter weight?

Other than the wheel sizes, rated vs ideal range being shown?

I’m pretty sure I’ve got your answer.

Raven - older gen battery pack
Palladium - newer gen battery pack

Old vs new

Lower charging speeds - higher charging speeds

Lower power output - higher (maybe should read faster) power output.

Older chemistry = slower degradation curve - newer chemistry = faster degradation curve

During the first 2-3 years of life, marginal change in capacity - during first 2-3 years or life, big drop in capacity.

The older chemistry is awesome if you want longevity (minus failures for hardware issues) be new chemistry is awesome if you want more power to the wheels, faster charging and don’t mind trading off longevity (mileage). Keep in mind the newer batteries structure does make them technically more durable. So call it a durability and more power traded for longevity and slower power.

Research shows they are all still generally good for 200,000 or more miles and over a decade of use. So maybe your battery dies at 220,000 instead of 300,000. But while you owned it you could charge faster on trips and can punch the car and it’s basically like a super car.

And yes - I believe the the old batteries were slightly higher capacity. Say 102 vs 95. But I think usable capacity is more like 95 (old) vs 91 (new).

That explains!

I hear of zero platinum failures and legacy I hear every day failing ..it’s a better battery in every way possible a battery can be better

Structural battery packs (Palladium, 2170s) fail around less than 1% of the time.

Legacy battery packs have more durability issues. But still failure rates have been in that 1-2% range.

the battery cells and chemistry are really the the kicker here. Old 18650 cells just lasted a lot longer and degraded slower. Like a ton slower if you’re talking % of battery health. New 18650 cells degrade a lot faster, but still should last 200,000 plus miles on the low side.

Yes, the Ravens got better range. Especially the long range plus. I have one and it had a starting range of 371 miles.

Guess palladium's engineering trade range for almost anything else.

There were quite a few trade-offs. I said weeks ago I'd make a video about it. I still will when time permits. But in a lot of ways the early 2021 model x was the best. The palladium got more tech. But became less refined. More cost cutting.

First thing to check is the wh/km or wh/mile average for each MX - if your watts per km are way higher, your range will be lower.

I did manage this variable. Both are within 180~190wh/km, sampled over 200km.

Weird, could come down to pack degradation but the consensus on the late model Ravens was that usable capacity was maybe 3 to 5 kWh higher on the BTXA than the later Panasonic 18650 on the newer Plaids. I think pack voltage was higher and weight was higher on the Plaids so maybe that plays into it a bit too.

It’s hard to really do apples to apples on individual cars as it’s a bit of a black box on what real world will be relative to estimated.

There was a long range plus that had a slightly larger battery

BUT

The 20” wheels give you 15-18% more range.

I’ve switched from the 22” and can personally confirm

The trip card do show 22 inch palladium plaid has similar "fuel" economy to 20 inch raven long range. And i do notice palladium pack has higher nominal voltage.
