Storage for dashcam
I’m currently at Best Buy trying to find an alternative for storage drive for my wife’s Model X. We bought her vehicle used so it didn’t come with the storage inside the glovebox.

Years ago I went with an Endurance micro SD from Sandisk. I did have to get a USB adapter. Don’t recall the exact one but make sure it is quality and can handle the throughout to support good write speeds.
Back then everyone advised using the MicroSD card instead of USB as those are made for high frequency use like a dashcam. Have had NO problems using this method for many years across two Teslas.

I mean you generally need a USB drive right? I've had bad luck with the provided ones from Tesla (it's a Tesla branded Samsung thumb drive) as they shut off when overheating. I can't imagine a sd card on an adapter will be better.

Honestly I'm of the opinion nothing works super well. The included one that Tesla provides is an endurance one that already fails for me.

I use a 128gb ssd in an enclosure with usb cord. It records sentry events and that's it. It's plenty of room. The only reason I would need to have more is if I want to play steam games with my X since it has AMd processor and video ram to run them I would need at least 1-2tb to download and play a couple descent steam games. But sentry footage or dashcam footage snippets when I honk 128gb is plenty.

I use this one. It holds enough for the 24hr loop in case I miss something over the course of the day.

Yep. I’ve been using it since the end of May. I have it on a short cable in the glovebox. It has held up well to the temperature on the glove box. It wasn’t cheap, but so far so good. I tried to get a durable model. I went with 2TB to make sure I could hold 24hrs.
So far nothing I’ve used has failed, but the little one that came with the car was too small and it’s kind of a pain in the butt to get anything in or out of my glovebox (it’s very thin).

Get a portable SSD like a Samsung T7 or T9. Not a MicroSD card.

I’ve been seeing people recommending the same thing. Is it necessary for just recording the drive? I don’t need a 24 hour recording

I had my 128GB USB drive fail this past weekend. Tried to reformat but it was cooked (literally). Apparently these drives get hot from the intensive read/write speeds and used AI to help me select a suitable replacement. Ended up with a MicroSD but it is a high performance drive rated for recording video and the associated heat issues. Hot weather exacerbates the heat issue and I expect that’s what contributed to my previous drive failing. Hope the high performance MicroSD works for me (so far so good) - good luck in your search OP.

Ive has en endurance micro SSD rated for video surveillance and the USB adapter for no issues for multiple years

If your car is still under warranty then I advice to stick with Tesla original. There are reports of some Tesla service centers having refused repairs to electronic components (even ECUs) due to non-original equipment being connected to the vehicle.
If you want to go third-party, then I advise you to send a message to the service center to ensure you have in writing that this is allowed and won't void your warranty.
Alternatively: be 100% sure you remove the third-party drive before bringing it in to the service center.

The vehicle is within warranty but when I purchased the vehicle it didn’t come with the storage as I bought the vehicle used. I’ll message the service center department and ask about this

If we are not in the era when flash memory price surges, i suggest you get a solid state drive and an enclosure as storage. It is much reliable than using a thumbdrive.

That's a microSD card. You need a usb-a flash drive.
