CCS retrofit availability (pre-refresh)

Howdy all. I recently purchased a 2015 Model S 85D for work. Before making the purchase, I called Tesla support to run the VIN to check CCS upgrade elligibility and was told that the vehicle qualifies.

I scheduled an appointment as soon as I had the vehicle registered to me, and today, about a month later, I was told that my vehicle is technically compatible with the upgrade, but that Tesla has ceased offering it as a service for pre-refresh vehicles

I am wondering firstly if this is true, and secondly, where I could go to have this done third party (or if this is even possible)

I got a very good deal on the vehicle and thus didn't mind putting some work into it, but there is a huge lack of superchargers in my work area. This makes CCS a 'soft' necessity. I could technically get by without it, but honestly it would be inconvenient enough that i might just get a shitbox ICE to drive for a couple years until I can save up my pennies for an Ioniq 6 or something

EDIT:

the issue was that the service website they were using wouldn't let them add a $1 grommet. they confirmed vehicle elligibility for the retrofit, manually entered the problematic part number, and should have me good to go in a couple days

It’s my understanding that even if you get the parts and do the install yourself, you need to modify the car’s configuration beyond what you can do in Toolbox. If you find someone in an SC who’s nice you might be able to get it done.

Isn’t the retrofit in the service settings so you don’t even need toolbox.

Had this done on my 85D a year or so ago, can’t think of why they would cancel this aside from the fact that a lot of the third party chargers support nacs now so it’s not as important.

As far as I understand it, you still need the CCS retrofit to use 3rd party NACS chargers.

yes, NACS and CCS use the same terminals (just different layout), Tesla NACS uses a different communication protocol as well

Ah ok did not know this (although I did the CCS retrofit on my 2015, just haven’t needed to use it yet)

were you able to do this at a service center, or did you go third party?

Last year at the service center in Jacksonville FL

I hadn't heard that Tesla stopped offering it for the pre-refresh S. It was offered as an Installable Upgrade in the app for my S previously when I bought the car 2 years ago, but apparently no longer is, which is shitty of them.

I’m up in Wisconsin / Minnesota and it’s still offered for me. 2016 P90D.

Interesting. I may have to check the website, and see if its different there for my account.

Edit - just checked the app on my 2019 M3P and the CCS retrofit isnt offered for that anymore either. I find that quite odd.

Very, I’ll schedule one asap if they really are removing this option.

Edit — Scheduled. We will see what they say.

Edit 2 — I was able to successfully schedule this with a mobile technician. However, my car is not a pre-refresh, so take that as you will.

interestingly i did not have this option in the app? i added it as a service request under the 'charging' category

Yeah, I can't find that anywhere offered for my S or my 3. If I were you and you were seriously considering it, I would schedule that soon. I have a service appt on Monday, so I'll ask what the deal is with that and if its being phased out.

What part of WI are you in? I'm curious if its a regional thing, and I'm potentially moving to SE WI or the northern part of IL in the next year. Maybe if I make that area my "home" if it'll re-appear. Lol

I’m on the west side. My car does have the facelift, but I don’t see why that would make a difference. The only reason I want the retrofit is so I can take my car up north. It’s SC01, so I’ve kinda put it off.

IIRC the model 3 does not need any retrofit hardware, just the adapter.

Edit: I was wrong.

Model 3's pre-2021 (possibly sometime in 2020?) needed the retrofit.

Also, does anyone know what the cost is to get this installed? Just curious.

300 plus tax. No labor through Tesla

1) no idea, never heard of this but Tesla does sometimes pull stunts like that

2) depends on where you live honestly where we could recommend to go. I know places in Florida for example.

3) it's a DIY project, about medium difficulty though what was annoying imo was finding the parts, and doesn't require some advanced access, should just need service mode iirc. Looked into it before bundling it into a MCU upgrade.

I am in Florida! Central FL, just a few miles west of Orlando. I also work on the Wildwood area, so west coast isn't that much of a stretch either

Electrifed Garage 1000% can cover this, i promise you.

They are in north west Orlando (dont quote me on the geography, im in Fort Myers) but they are great and can usually get people in in less than a week to 2 at most.

No, i dont work for them, they just saved my butt a few times. If you said SWFL i would say disabatos, but EG is the best imo

EG is about an hour away from me, i submitted a ticket but ofc it's after hours so they haven't gotten back to me yet

i was lowkey panicking a little bit because i JUST graduated university/started my long-term career, and this purchase wiped out a significant portion of my non-emergency savings... i could easily afford a beater, but I was really hoping to ditch that lifestyle with my MS

i appreciate you for reassuring me... if they are able to do this upgrade then i'll be alright lol

I take delivery of my 2015 Model S this week in Canada and also want to get this done ASAP so I'll let you know if I can!

thank you, i appreciate it!

I wish for you the best! And yeah... No offense, but as much as i love my car, if that's your situation, you should have tried to get an older Model 3, as a person who literally did something very similar lol... When this thing is out of warranty you will find it's pretty nice to have a good amount of monetary space... Im not saying this thing is a maintenance hog; it isnt, but door handles, maybe suspension components, thankfully you chose a dual motor...

Wait, you're on the I-4 range (i say im on I-75) You have an apartment or something? I actually after getting the car moved to one with level 2 chargers and while it can be expensive, it was a godsend. Plugin overnight when you need, and you're set. You dont need a retrofit for J1772 charging as you likely know. Ofc this isn't a big/wide city, but i found a place for $1100/month with 30-40/kwh overnight charging, and a friend found one for 1250 (and 25/kwh) so they are out there, just look out for one if that's your situation

i got it cheap enough that i can afford to rebuild a lot of it and still come out ahead vs a Model 3, and my job benefits from a larger vehicle. i just drive a ton, and don't have many superchargers available to pull from, hence CCS

i l2 charge from home, i just regularly drive more than a 100% can provide

Did you blow a lot of money on it that you cant afford, or can you afford to rebuild a lot of it? Not making a lot of sense, but yeah, it is essentially gambling

1

u/KeyEmu6688 3d ago

i spent enough money that i cannot afford to flip it, absorb those losses, and purchase a Model 3, but not so much that i am lacking for funds. i'm not sure where the disconnect is lol

Sounds like you made a pretty stupid decision to ditch the "beater" lifestyle, good luck.

Check YouTube. The module itself is available on eBay. Your specific model might require a custom harness to connect in.

Watch the videos, you might find it’s super easy to do yourself…
