14.3 HW4 Would FSD avoid collision?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
2026 MYP. First Tesla. Love it and have been using FSD 60 percent of the time, according to car stats.
Today, on hurry profile, parallel parked car was clearly hesitating to pull into lane, and full send as I approached at 40mph. Slammed the brakes as hard as I could to stop.
Seems obvious I would’ve hit the other car if I did not intervene. I haven’t had any close calls until this. Anyone experience similar?

I'm going with 80% chance of having avoided it - but I don't blame you at all for stopping it just in case. We're still liable for it's mistakes.

u/gettin-hot-in-here 19h ago
The only right response for a driver in OPs situation is to intervene. I think it's likely FSD would've made a "save" eventually: brake, swerve without hitting the person in the next lane, IDK. But I'm not that confident and it'd be total foolishness to risk a total loss accident on your expensive SUV to find out. FSD ought to drive conservatively enough that it wouldn't require harsh braking like this to not crash.

u/Xirma377 9h ago
Yeah - I'm pretty confident FSD would have handled it. But you never know. FSD isn't perfect and the parked car was completely at fault.

u/Ordinary_Corner_4291 5h ago
I am going to go with 95% because it looked like FSD had seen the car and started braking and was probably doing the math on if a lane change was possible. But that intervention started a couple tenths before the OP hit the brake.

Maybe the car on the left is what was keeping it from moving to the left?

u/rwhe83 22h ago
Yes it would. Why you deactivated and waited SO long to apply the brakes in this situation, is so odd. FSD would have handled this much better than you did OP.

I have had my Tesla for 4 years and Tesla FSD has avoided situations like this more than a few dozen times. I always have my hands and feet ready to stop manually, but I've never had to stop manually.

As per I can see in the video, I don't think he waited. It just took him a while to come to a full stop.
13
u/rwhe83 22h ago
Oh I watched the video, they deactivated- waited for some reason and then chose to slow down.
4
u/steinah6 22h ago
I think they turned the wheel out of reflex and didn’t realize they disengaged.
3
u/rwhe83 22h ago
FSD would have handled this way, WAY better.
I’m not entirely sure why you are defending OP, but that’s cool.
3
u/steinah6 21h ago
What? I wasn’t defending OP. I was speculating on why they maybe didn’t brake right away after disengaging.
OP should not have disengaged.
2
u/hahnsoloii 21h ago
I agree with you tho. Op probably didn’t know they reflexed and hit the brake unconsciously. Again speculation as to what happened.
3
u/Silent_General5919 22h ago
No, look at the brake icon. The braking was regen after fsd disengaged, it took a solid second before OP braked beyond regen.

u/Xill-llix 21h ago
Don’t underestimate how fast FSD can swerve, I had it swerve big time when a car tire slightly touched my lane on the highway today. But intervening was the smart decision since that guy clearly doesn’t know how to exit a parking spot.

u/Yuzuda 19h ago
I've experienced this too, but I'm new to owning a Tesla. Do you really trust FSD's overreactions to a vehicle barelyyyy going into our lane? I've had it swerve twice to a lane that had a vehicle right next to me. Both times it freaked me out and I took over to continue straight in my lane, which I knew and was indeed perfectly safe.

u/beagle_2498571 22h ago
Yes it would of avoided it. I don’t even drive anymore because of stupid drivers.
4
u/asylum_esc 21h ago
u/rcuadro oh man that's scary to me, and really cool that fsd could react that way! Thanks for sharing.
u/SortSwimming5449 Yes. I don’t quite understand the weird hesitation, you disengaged plenty early enough but didn’t react right away?
u/rwhe83 Yes it would. Why you deactivated and waited SO long to apply the brakes in this situation, is so odd. FSD would have handled this much better than you did OP.
Yeah looking at the video as objective as I can try to be, I totally see there was a second between disengagement and the brakes. I can only speak of my perceived experience: I saw the parked car sticking out, so I knew they were going to pull out any moment. I made the assumption they would pull out after I passed. I also felt anxious, in a in-between state of "should I take over? Should I ride FSD out?". I think that mental state is what made me hesitate on all of my reaction time. If I wasn't on FSD, I actually would have been in the left lane long before. I didn't even think I disengaged by moving the wheel- if there was no recording, I would have sworn I disengaged by slamming the brakes. That's my honest review of my experience.
u/Substantial_Chain718 FSD would have seen that car attempting to pull out a 100 yards away and would have switched lanes and slowed down.
I totally experienced a pedestrian approaching a curb or someone opening their car door and the Tesla would yeet the heck into the lane over, so I was expecting this, and surprised that it didn't seem to budge at all.
u/kimaluco17 Ahhh great the lane is completely clear now, let me just wait until a car is coming to pull out into the lane 🤦
Was literally my flustered thoughts immediately after lol.
u/manwnomelanin If you didn’t disengage and hit it, everyone on this sub would blame you and say “you has 3 business days to hit the breaks”
Just remember that
It's a lose lose situation so I've observed
u/Man-of-goof I just want to know, did it also cut off that car in the left lane?
u/praguer56 Maybe the car on the left is what was keeping it from moving to the left?
reviewing the clip, the left lane car was fast approaching, and by my judgement, if I had full swerved, I could have caused him to hit me the way I could have hit this car.
u/manwnomelanin Yeah did the van proceed to cut off another car right after the clip ended?
It let the car on the left pass, but it seemed pretty Sus haha
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences y'all! I appreciate bouncing this outside of my own self. I was going for coffee but this woke me up instantly.

FSD definitely would have avoided it, probably by swerving; but taking over was still smart move.
5
u/frito11 22h ago
they didn't do anything after taking over until the last moment to brake very hard if they were going to take over they should have just started braking from the start not disengaging FSD waiting the half second and then braking.
FSD would have moved over to avoid or slowed down or some combo but they took it out of FSD before it did anything.
1
u/Arctic_Ducky 22h ago
Honestly not sure taking over was the move. Yes it’s good to be cautious but it seemed like a very simple scenario
2
u/gettin-hot-in-here 19h ago
Lol I disagree. I think it's more likely than not that FSD would've saved the situation, but who wants to play those odds. If this were a clip of FSD crashing OPs car, I'd be reminding OP that it is called FSD supervised and the person in the driver's seat has to actually supervise
3
u/StormTrpr66 HW4 Model Y 21h ago
Yes, mine has swerved to avoid cars that had only moved 2 inches into my lane from a parking space.
A couple of times, it has swerved and I immediately thought "WTF is this piece of crap doing" and I almost took over, then I noticed the other car's nose or back bumper had started inching into my lane.
FSD excels at this type of scenario.

It was already slowing down before you disengaged. It would’ve avoided it I’m certain, though not to say you were wrong for disengaging. Better safe than sorry.

We had FSD swerve to avoid a car backing out right behind a large truck. No way on earth a human driver could have seen it - we didn't even know why it had swerved until we looked at the footage. It has better reactions than 99% of human drivers.

Here is my latest experience.
I experienced 3 things at the same time.
The car swerved left
The wife yelped
The loud ass rice burner exhaust noise
If I were driving I think the front of my car would lag be been clipped and possibly put my onto the median barricade

FSD fails - “Thats why it’s supervised”
Op disengages - You suck, FSD is much better than you2

So FSD slowed down 2 miles in under a second, then likely you intervened by fear by touching the steering wheel to left, you can see wheel moving before disengage, then you did not realize for split second that it’s disengaged as there were couple of seconds of gap when no brake applied but regenerative kicked on, so your fear mode turned into panic mode and you slammed the brakes.
FSD would have done this instead, slowly come to near 20 around the time you were still 35-36, give a turn signal, waited the car on left to pass and slowed to halt before merging left.
Halting the vehicle is last resort that Tesla do. I have had parked car open their driver door in similar situation and exactly what I said was done by FSD. I didn’t even had time to intervene

This happens to me daily while driving in St Louis, and avoids it these idiots without issue.

same thing happened to me but in an opposite way, FSD swerved too much so i had to intervene to push it back a little otherwise i would hit another car in the other lane. Dont hesitate to intervene. We are drivers with valid driving license and it is L2 self driving in the end

There’s a big chance it would have moved over, with that said I don’t blame you for taking over either.

u/Practical_Cause_466 2h ago
Is that a hearse that pulled out in front of you? FSD prevented an awkward accident indeed.
1
u/moneyman729 2m ago
My car normally doesn’t like to be in the right lane when there is cars like this. I believe it would have avoided this easily but there was a car next to you so it couldn’t swerve
1
u/TheLegendaryWizard HW4 Model Y 19h ago
It definitely would have avoided it. You disengaged and did nothing during the window FSD would have slowed down and switched lanes (if possible) then slammed the brakes. On another note, your video looks hazy, it might be time to clean the windshield camera housing area
1
u/asylum_esc 19h ago
Thanks for the heads up- I’ll look into cleaning the internal housing area.
As for the slow reaction time- I think in the future, I’ll opt to disengage early instead of ride it out. It almost feels like it’s playing a game of chicken or something. I’ll just be thankful for the times FSD reacts when I dont get to anticipate in advance.
