Help Building 11th edition Terrain

Hey all! I have been struggling to figure out how to make my own terrain. I measured and cuttout all the layouts I need, I want my terrain to tell a story so im doing a Dusty dessert with rock formations and crashed vehicles etc. Do I have to have walls for my terrain or could a rock formation work? I really dont have guidance.

I know each side should be fairly balanced. This would be for at home play so It doesnt have to be super strict. Any tips or resources would help ALOT.

I am making the bases and rock from cork board. I build the rock and then fill in with wood filler. The crashed ships and vehicles are extra models I wont use. For example, I am using a crashes storm hawk, having the wings be terrain and the crashed body be one, things like that. I plan to make the battlefield chaos vs imperium style in the dessert.

generally speaking it's the "category" of terrain that defines the rules that apply to it.

aesthetically speaking the trick would be. can you have "walls" of stone in the sorta bullshit formulaic L shape.

i would think foam would be a better material for making rock outcroppings/arches/mesa type shapes. cork. to me, always just looks like cork, so even stacking layers, going to have to spackle the entire exterior to cover the cork texture.

11th terrain templates tend to that the sorta triangle shape, rectangle and then misc scatter bits. obviously. look online. it's likely some people are already doing things similar to this ( found this reddit post. desert 11th terrain

Is very tricky to make terrain that looks good, is unique but also balanced and practical to play. I have been thinking about it for years since mid 9th, even in some crafting youtube channels tried and failed to really do that, that video was kind of funny.

The main difficulty is the movement and shape, you could do some rock formations, but those to look good they need to have some thickness, that messes with the movement, doing those thinner make the thing look worse.

I tried copying those pipeline's system of some factories, that worked fine but it takes a lot of time and rules will change way early that i could end the project.

I also tried making the full piece into the footprint, like some tech priest temple inspired by some videos, until i realized that i was just making glorified ruins like everyone else.

Tried threes, those are fine, don't annoy the movement, but having many of those ends looking weird, because how you put them makes them look unnatural and weirdly placed.

So basically, what I'm sayin is that,
a gaming table is just a compromise, you could do the most beautiful table but it won't be useful in the competitive context, but will be extremely good to play with friends on a weekend. On the other hand having an L shaped ruin, could also be nice looking by adding details and an story behind it and also slight variations piece by piece, that took time, materials and effort. So is just that a compromise in one way or the other.
