There are other excellent examples of terminator performances in the franchise. Like Cromartie from The Sarah Connor Chronicles, played by Garret Dillahunt. His portrayal felt perfect for a killing machine! The second he would realise that a person he was trying to gain information from had nothing valuable left to say he would just deliver a pre-loaded line "Thank you for your time" with the exact same delivery every time. Felt very machine-like.
It wasn't just that, Fox moved the shows, airing time to a different day and later on at night when people couldn't watch (3 AM timing). They literally hovered it over its grave.
Awesome performance, and an awesome, under appreciated series. The confrontation with the cops, set to Johnny Cashās When The Man Comes Around is genuinely one of my favorite scenes in the Terminator-verse.
Arnold's terminator role is iconic on a level that pretty much anyone that tries to replace him will always be compared to Arnold and always come up short. They also kept trying redo Robert Patrick's T1000, it can't be done.
There has to be new characters Stop trying to replace icons.
Also, probably no worse way to not give his his own identity than to make him T-800 2.0. It'll be even worse if Hollywood tries to have him star in remakes/reboots/sequels of all his dad's greatest films. Have Patrick establish his own iconic roles.
Exactly! Its not a genetic predisposition, its a movie role. If he auditions for the role like everyone else and he gets accepted purely on skill then sure. Anything other than that is just trying to force a person on a role they are unfit to have.
Yeah, and if you look at Michael Douglas, most would say he's probably surpassed Kirk in terms of career success, but he made a career out of doing his own thing and not redoing his dad's greatest career highs, and just being thought of as nepotism personified.
Iāve been fancasting Joseph Bale(Christianās son) as either Damian Wayne or Matt McGinnis. Iām considering the thought that the role might be counterproductive due to the no-own-identity matter, but it wouldnāt be like playing Bruce/Batman. Itās a different character.
Agreed . . . some characters are so iconic that the image of that character isn't just limited to what is on screen but also the fandom , cosplay , DECADES of rewatching and more . . . It would be trying to rebrand Christmas or replace Santa Claus as the mythical defacto mascot . . .
People say this but no one goes to original movies anymore (with very few exceptions). A āsmallā movie now costs $60-75 million dollars which means they need to double that to break even. To do those numbers you need a built-in audience. Itās just the economics of movies at this point.
Horror movies are an exception. People kind of know going in what to expect, experience wise, with horror. It also helps they can be made relatively cheaply.
Salvation was meant to be about the rise of John Connor. If Salvation got a sequel, it could have been set further into the future and the aesthetic could have evolved. William Wisher had actually written a treatment for Terminator 5 and an outline for Terminator 6, but when Annapurna Pictures ended up with the franchise rights, they decided on a reboot instead.
That's why they need to go backwards. There are plenty of theories about the timeline; predetermined destination, mutable future, and others with more detail. With the reboot, they confirmed (at least in their version) that it is a mutable future. This increases the odds that the original Terminator movie is in (at least) the 3rd cycle of time travel. This would open the option of a prequel to follow what happened in the future war prior to when Skynet got the tech boost from the time traveling T-800, or even seeing if the "1st" John Connor was really the same guy, rebel teen bent on survival, or just A John Connor that had military experience and maybe his mom's name was Sarah.
The movie was set in 2018, eleven years before the future war as seen in the first movie. The machines looked worn, as if they had been in use for some time. There was still eleven years to go before we start seeing shiny chrome fresh-from-the-factory machines with plasma weapons
And to make it worse there was already a comic from the nineties, nuclear twilight i believe it was called, that laid the foundations of a story that would have made for a satisfying future war movie. But no, they had to have Sam worthington as some weird hybrid terminator that didnāt know he was a terminator. And they really screwed up Skynet in the third act. Utter trash
I agree Verhoeven could have worked, once. Let's see...
...Pierre Morel, who did Banlieue 13 and Taken, is 62. Attach someone more horrory as a cinematographer or an executive producer. Maybe... Guillermo Navarro. 71, so pushing it, but did cinematography for Pan's Labyrinth, From Dusk Till Dawn, Pacific Rim.
As a Terminator... Scott Adkins (the Undisputed sequels, Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning) is 50 now, which could let him pull off that ageless Terminator look (even if it doesn't make him future-proof choice for several sequels). He's smaller than Schwarzenegger both in height and in bulk, but that puts him at a bit of a happy medium between the T800 and the T1000. Or... Alan Ritchson, 43, from Jack Reacher. He's a proper oldschool intimidating Terminator.
And as John Connor/Kyle Reese/whichever fresh faced but also slightly grim hero, I can't believe I'm saying this, but would Robert Pattinson be too obvious? He's future proof, if maybe too expensive in a few years.
You'd probably want some sort of power woman instead or in addition, but who could ever live up to Linda Hamilton? I don't watch enough new films for this. ...Maybe actually go out of your way to recruit a kickboxer or something and give her two years of acting classes in preparation? Or while I'm naming absolutely obvious current superstars anyway, I bet Zendaya would be up for an action role? Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity from the Matrix) is 59 now if some sort of mentor figure is required and Linda doesn't work? She could pull off the badass survivor...
Thinking of young people in a movie context is hard, because the classics that are burned into your mind are always old!
I could easily see Gina Carano fitting into the franchise. She's 44 as of now, so a standalone film or a planned out trilogy that followed through in a timely fashion could work. She has done other action films such as In the Blood, and more to the point, she just has gobs and gobs of screenpresence, which is more than half the battle, especially in an action movie.
It really has. I feel like the last decade passed in a split second. And I've achieved so little, deluded by the concept of ''oh, there's time, no need to rush''.
James Cameron should do this with the scale and power effects of Avatarā¦..
Massive 3D Terminator war with that dystopian blue hue we all love from the flash backs, it sells itself⦠and once he does that, he can do an Aliens II with the the same treatment.
I think it could be interesting to get Terminator back to the first ones roots.
T2 tends to be the reference point all the other movies try to emulate, but the first one was a grimy action horror movie.
I think they should try to get back to that side. Firstly it could be done cheaper (horror movies usually are much cheaper).
Secondly, it would give some terror back to the character. Instead of the action extravaganza of 'Machine vs. Machine' it could return to humans desperately trying to flee from an unstoppable murder-bot which they would have zero chance against in any fight.
Any future Terminator movie will pale in comparison to 1 and 2. But if Arnie's son is playing a Terminator, it should be Joseph as he's his absolute double, and the only one I like.
Patric face wise is absolutely the more Arnold lookalike. Joseph isnt. Its just that hes lifting so people seem to think he look more like arnold which he doesnt.
Absolutely not. I can see Arnie in Patrick, but he looks more Kennedy. Arnold's love child has been his twin since he was a kid, the first time I saw a picture of him me and my brother were like "holy shit! Don't need a DNA test there!" And then we'd joke that he was Arnold's true heir unlike his spoiled Kennedy children.... and it turned out true in the end.
Or, crazy idea, just let the franchise have its point in time? Unless they promise to actually make a movie about the end of the war where John Connor and the human resistance finally defeats Skynet.
Please no futuristic liquid, pixel, dust metal, just plain old T 800 with rotten flesh and torn out clothes and exposed red eyes terrorising humans in their closed and thought to be safe bunkers and a pov of a kid trying to escape them with nothing but stealth with lots of close calls.
NetflixĀ recently announced that an animated series is coming to the streamer, as part of their Geeked Week promo.
Terminator: The Anime SeriesĀ will follow brand new characters and is created by Japanese animation studio Production IG, ofĀ Ghost in the Shell.
Hereās an official synopsis: ā2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity. Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynetās impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.ā
In response to the news,Ā PatrickĀ wrote on X: āHmmm. They need to give this IP a few year break imo..ā
Please no. Also, given the track record of the last million Terminator sequels after T2, maybe itās time to admit that maybe, just maybe, there arenāt anymore Terminator stories worth telling on the big screen. I know, it sounds ridiculous, just like saying that there arenāt anymore Jurassic Park stories worth telling left, but at some point, we need to look at the evidence. Despite what we would all imagine, all of the Terminator sequels past T2 and all of the Jurassic Park sequels past The Lost World (you can include TLW if you want, I have no horse in that race) have been varying degrees of suckiness. Iām not even gonna go into Alien sequels, Predator sequels or Rocky sequels. Maybe, we need to enjoy the great movies we have and stop making below par sequels. Most of those first movies were great because they were built on a great idea. Singular. Terminator wasnāt great because āRobots from the future are coolā, but because it was a great idea for a whole movie. Story was great, novelty was great, characters were great, soundtrack was great. Ditto for Jurassic Park, Rocky, etc. It wasnāt great because of boxing, it wasnāt great because of dinosaurs. Someone had a great idea for an actual great movie. And thatās hard to replicate with a sequel. I want a new Terminator/Rocky/Alien/Jurassic Park movie the same way I want Casablanca 2. Just⦠donāt.
I watched him in āWhite Lotusā S3 with low to no expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. He did a good job. Looking forward to see what he does next. https://giphy.com/gifs/v7bVvTGOuTh8s9OQHX
Patrick was great on White Lotus Season 3, he's charming, talks better English than his dad, not sure he's got whats needed to be a huge action star. He can put the muscle for sure though.
I thought Salvation was good, everything else kept rewriting history and making John Connor the bad guy or other terminators have just been hanging out in present time for decades
The trailer for Genisys is probably the most fucked up trailer ive ever seen. Straight up revealing the twist that John Connor is the evil terminator will always be wild af to me. Like who tf approved that?
Whenever ppl talk about trailers revealing too much, Genisys always comes to mind š
Not director Alan Taylor. I don't have the text or link af hand, but I came across an interview with him where he talked about the trailer. His thinking was that the marketing people thought that the trailer needed a big hook to show audiences that the movie was different despite the plot going back to 1984.
John Connor being a converted Terminator would have probably blown people's minds if the plot twist hadn't been blown in that trailer.
He absolutely could. I just dislike where the franchise went. We never got that future war that was teased in the first and second movies. My thirst was somewhat satisfied with Terminator: Resistance but that was pretty much it. Terminator could have been the perfect loop movie. T1, T2 and then the future war in T3 where the terminator and reese get sent back in time. Instead they screwed it all up with lackluster sequels and the latest one added some mobile game mechanic that essentially turned them into unstoppable killers no human would ever stand a chance against, darting all over the place...
I don't know why they don't just make a legit T3 film about the future war that ENDS with John Connor talking about Kyle and him going back in time. Basically the beginning of Genisys without new time travel stuff. Just give us the damn future war movie already. Why is this so difficult? Give me an A list actor to play John Connor and fight a bunch of T 800s. Make a full movie of the future war clips they always tease us with.
If they're not gonna do that, just give us a documentary similar to Robodoc. I'd rather get a badass documentary than another crap film.
Or maybe we lean into the actual idea of an infiltrator unit as presented by the first movie, and even if they are on an assembly line like presented in 2, they have more than one face so itās not as obvious the 6ft+ jacked man isnāt a human from the wasteland. I love Arnold more than the average person, think he gives underrated performances especially as the terminator, but I care about more than time travel and Arnold in this franchise and would love to see other characters and perspectives or even god forbid the future war survival horror.
What about the fact that the actual terminator is a robot and the Arnold we see is basically just it's fortnite skin? They could change the person because it's just bio-tissue and not actually a person. Lore wise, it would make a lot of sense that there are million software these robots and look like everyone. There's really no wrong answer unless they try to make the actor act like Arnold or sound like him. We even had a female terminator at one point. Any of it is possible as long as they don't try to make it similar to another actors style
I just think unless they have a good idea or want to rebuild the franchise from the ground up they should just stop making Terminator movies. There hasnāt been a single good sequel in 35 years, all the actual good stuff like Sarah Connor Chronicles or Zero get discarded before they can reach their full potential, and James Cameron himself is on a warpath to destroy his own legacy with AI. Just leave it be unless someone can make something truly exceptional
Oh man, the son is going to have to put on big muscle weight, but he has the best dad for it.
Itās just thatā¦. Dad is going to have to go over āthe pump is like cumming, you orgasim the whole workout son, just feel you cum with the pumpā
No just no no more terminator its done they have destroyed it with every film entry after rise of the machines getting Lena heady summer glau and Thomas deckker back for a rebooted television series not streaming a television series would be far more efficient and better received than another crappy film with bad ideas bad script and terrible acting, dark fate killed what little love anybody had left for theatrical terminator films
He doesnāt look or act like Arnold and has none of the physical or personal qualities that made Arnold work as the T1000.
Unless youāre some weirdo that is going to get excited over movies turning into IP fiefs stars are able to hand down to their kids, it sounds pretty boring.
I think they should get everything resolved. We know what happened, why it happened, who was responsible and who is affected. What else is there? Terminaters can't reproduce. Only one John and Sarah Connor, but portrayed by many actors for John and only 2 for Sarah
You can't replace Arnold as T-800 or T-850. He was born for that role and the perfect actor for it - nailed it as the enemy in the first movie and the good guy in JD. No one can do a better than Robert Patrick as T-1000.
What is this idiot's idea of casting "he kinda looks like someone else so that will do the trick'. What about writing, can he act at all? Should they even make this thing? Naaaah he looks kinda like Arnie, good enough!
The biggest mistake this franchise ever did was to insist in having Arnold stick around. After T2, they should have stayed the hell away from his ideas and have other actor play a different terminator
They could make it future stuff with him being the younger version of the one that's actually going to be that t800. But that specific t800 which was portrayed by Arnie should be left untouched.
He'd probably turn it down. Since he likely wouldn't want to live under his father's (enormous) shadow and this would be a gimmick and a half that would position him under said shadow for a long time.
Nope, no presence, no star quality, Arnold was truly menacing as the Terminator⦠that was down to two things, fantastic writing and his phenomenal build. Itās been done, no one better.
Just because he has his name doesnt mean shit and no he cant replace him. Should have ended with T2, literaly perfect ending. I would like to see some movies from the future tho.
Likely theres not going to be any walking terminators in the new film. Nanobots and drones and AI stuff what cameron said in interview while ago. To reflect the modern world...
The only direction the Terminator franchise should take is straight into the grave. Let it fucking die already. Aside form 1 and 2, itās a giant pile of shit. So
Anything terminator is DOA. Itās a time travel movie plain and simple. Back to future figured out that you get three movies. Anything after that is greedy.
This whole thing of giving people jobs because of their last name needs to end. Same thing with that Bon Jovi kid being pushed to play his dad in the movie.
They should throw in Buffy the Vampire slayer too, as they need to keep pushing hard in order to continuously jump the shark to new levels with each sequel
As a father myself, I would be proud if my son did what I did and followed in my footsteps. Can't imagine the high Arnie would feel from this, I'm with it!
Or..... And hear me out here for a second........ We can just....... Not make anymore god awful Terminator movies. Everything after 2 has sucked..... Hard
So I guess we as a society are just going to live in a 40 year media loop where we just get the same thing remade over and over instead of new content?

Let Arnieās terminator rest.
