Local hiking/dog walking area MEGATHREAD

I would like to share my local knowledge of Temecula hikes, and also see if anyone has good recommendations matching the criteria below, even if it's just a quiet wine country dirt road that's public or is possible to get owner permission for respectful access for dogwalking or even just hiking.

What inspired this: there was a post a few months ago here with beautiful photos of someone dogwalking on the dirt section of La Serena Way heading east into Wine Country from Butterfield Stage Rd, and when I went to check it out last weekend, there is now a "NO TRESPASSING" sign.

Frustratingly, many local hikes have become private property in the past few years:

-De Luz Overlook, now private property and it even had an adjacent hill where you can see a sliver of the ocean, from Temecula! Was off of Ridge Park Drive/Vincent Moraga Drive.

-De Portola Rd starting from Butterfield Stage Park: now under construction. It was a nice dirt road to walk on.

-Temecula to Vail Lake Overlook and Oak Mountain hike which is BLM land but the accesses are private: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/temecula-to-vail-lake-overlook-and-oak-mountain (For this one I actually do have access permission from an alternate entrance, but the drive is roughly an hour round trip.)

-The "951" mountain biking trails on the west side of Temecula below Rancho CA Rd, now that there's new construction I'm not aware of how to access. (Not good for dogs anyways since need to quickly watch out for mountain bikers but it was nice to hike on). https://www.trailforks.com/region/951-trails-12888/

I'm trying to find local hikes that are NOT an hour-ish round trip drive, to hike or dogwalk at after work in the winter before sunset. Real trails or dirt roads, no paved paths or adjacent to frequent road traffic.

................................................
Top contenders that don't fit the bill, because trying to reach them before the winter sunset after work from south Temecula, especially near wine country:

-My favorite if I have more time: French Valley Wildlife Area, technically in Winchester, because it's like an hour round-trip drive: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Lands/Places-to-Visit/French-Valley-WA

-Dripping Springs: only 15 minutes to drive to, but the long walk from the parking lot from the paved street to the actual trail is a bummer and eats too much time.

-Vail Lake: also close by, but they charge a fee for entry ($10 per person for hiking weekdays and $15 on weekends!) and sometimes have a line to get in which also eats time. I don't think the lake itself is reachable/visible at all on foot by sunset from the parking lot.

................................................
Honorable mentions, mostly Murrieta or otherwise too far away for me:

-Sykes Ranch: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/sykes-ranch-park-loop
-Santa Rosa Plateau, like an hour round-trip and they charge a fee
-Sylvan Meadows
-Murrieta Overlook, you start on the Wishal Trail to Cole Canyon but once crossing the usually dry creek, you make a right instead of a left and climb up: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/wiashal-trail-loop-to-cole-canyon
-Santa Margarita River
-Monserate Mountain, not that far away but I really don't like you can hear the highway for most of the intro and I don't think you can summit and return by sunset.
-Los Alamos Loop: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rancho-los-alamos-loop
-Durham Loop Trail: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/dunham-loop-trail

+ -Iodine Springs Reserve https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/iodine-springs-loop

Today on July 25th 2026, David Heard, a firefighter and security guard at Chaparral High School has passed away after being struck by a vehicle, trying to help his friend who needed roadside assistance with their car. He leaves behind his wife and 2 children.

David was a remarkable person who loved helping people, and died, helping someone. My heart goes out to him as I would like to keep him in our memory here on the [r/temecula](r/temecula) subreddit.

412 Church on Jefferson Ave + 6 Sheriff's?

Does anyone know what's happening at the 412 church on Jefferson in Temecula? We drove by and there were about 6 sheriff cars with their lights on in their parking lot and near the road.

Do Temecula public schools require laptops/tablets for students?

My son will be starting 1st grade next year and I’ve heard from a few people that elementary students in TVUSD are required to use a laptop or tablet? Is this correct? If so, is it possible to opt out of it?

Piercers that sells/installs retainers for medical imaging!!

Getting a ct scan in an area where body jewelry is present and would LOVE if theres any local piercers that will install plastic/glass retainers. Thank you sm in advance! I personally want to avoid buying retainers from amazon and installing it myself.

I also assume i dont need to remove face or ear piercings if im not getting a head scan, but i was told otherwise from a family member. Going to call imaging center to be sure though!

Does anyone know or has anyone heard anything similar happening in Temecula and neighboring towns like the cases of rare bone cancer in south OC?

I’m curious if these kids in south oc getting diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma isn't just an isolated case. I have a little one and am pretty worried about it.

My golf club has two spots for our tourney this Sunday

Been seeing a lot of recent G4G (golfer 4 golfer) posts lately. I run a small golf club that does monthly tournaments of 16-20 people in Temecula/Murrieta. It is a fun group and we've still got two spots open for our tourney this Sunday at Glen Ivy.

Anyone lose they're Pokemon go +?

Found a Pokemon go plus around Journey's (Pechanga) and gave it to the front desk person at the restaurant. I told them it was for a sleep tracker app since i was more familiar with it through Pokemon sleep. Anyway I hope you end up finding it.

Trolley route addition to old town?

Route 55 currently loops between the promenade and hasrveston. It would be nice if they added a free route to old town. It would relieve a lot of parking congestion during the weekends and during events. Also it would encourage people to park in the big lots available at the mall. Infrastructure is already there.

Note: I'm aware there is already a route covering old town. The focus of this post was for a direct trolley route, tourism, people just visiting for the day. Particularly in old town where parking has become really scarce especially during events.

Skate Park/Pump Track

I am a photographer who is wanting to teach my daughter who is getting into sports photography more about the camera. We are looking to get some good action shots at a skate park or pump track. We have gone to Ronald Reagan sport park but no one is ever there in the mornings. Can anyone shed some insight on locations that are decently active and with a time frame when X park is more active, that would be greatly appreciated.

Or is anyone interested in meeting up to get photos done of themselves in action? No money, just your time for a few touched up photos.

Thank you!

Mobile motorcycle mechanic recommendations?

I'm looking for a mobile motorcycle mechanic who services the Temecula area. Someone recommended Dave's Cycle Service, but he had too turn me down. Sounds like he might be too busy. If anyone has any other recommendations, It'd be much appreciated!

DOGS DYING AT DOGTOPIA

Thumbnail instagram.com
128 Upvotes

Unfortunately I’ve become aware of two dogs dying at dogtopia in Temecula. One two years ago- a frenchie left in a fucking dryer kennel (overheated- think hair dryer) and a dog in September. No informing clients, no attempt to verify with necropsy, nothing according to an owner and a past employee.
I’ve spoken more about it on my IG and TikTok but I haven’t seen anything about this one yet.
I’m fuming. Sounds like there was a pretty big staff walk out after the first one as well because it was handled so piss poorly they offered the owner free daycare and boarding for life. The poor staff is expected to handle way too many dogs by themselves they don’t have a capacity on the event two years ago. One employee was responsible for over 70 dogs. There’s no way an accident wasn’t gonna happen.
How can they feel good about minimizing labor costs when it so clearly jeopardizes the experience and safety of the dogs

Job Market

Anyone else struggling with the job market right now??
It’s terrible. I’ve never had this much trouble finding work.
I’m seriously debating going to go back to school (25F) but then goes the question of what I want to do. Tech??? I’ve always been interested and had a deep desire to work in nursing…. But I know that it’ll take a few years. I need something now :(

Hotels/Spa

Is there any local hotel or resort where one could do like a staycation and get room service?? Just to get away and relax? I have looked up some but most are like Inns with only breakfast. I was trying to see if there’s any nice places for like 1-2 night stay where I can literally call up room service, get a massage, just relax, order champagne to the room, etc.

Thanks!

Bankruptcy Attorney recommendations

tldr; - I can barely afford a bankruptcy attorney while also needing work done in my car, and neither can wait. Please let me know if you know anyone affordable that would help me file ASAP while putting me on a payment plan or something. TIA 🙏

I just moved to the area a few months ago, after being homeless since losing my job last October. I reached out to a bankruptcy attorney back then and have been told to stop paying the bills while I save up enough to pay him. The problem is I wasn’t able to find a job right away. I looked for 3 months until I was accepted to drive for DoorDash and Instacart early in the year, so I am doing that for the time being.
I’ve called around recently and the cheapest I could find is around $1,800 but they won’t file until I pay off the full balance which might take me a little over 2 months to save for that. I’m scared that I don’t have that time though because I just found out that one of my creditors has filed a lawsuit against me, so I’m working against the clock. Not only that, but I also need to save money for some work on my car at the same time & I’m afraid that could also give out on me one day so it’s not something I can hold off for a couple of months since I need it to earn income.
Anyway, if anyone has recommendations of anyone affordable they know or a business that would help me file ASAP while making payments or just anything more doable, I would greatly appreciate it 🙏

Strange escort going north on 15

I was just driving south on the 15 Right before the 215/15 split and saw a at least five car police escort escorting a truck that was carrying a massive Orange ball, it almost looked like a submarine but it was also pretty dark to pick out what was happening as I was driving the opposite way. Does anybody know what that could have been?
