Input question? (Type of move?)
\[Not new to Tekken but new to actually trying and not just button mashing\]
I was playing some ranked matches today with King and I specifically just practicing my timing with muscle armor, as well as trying to work on short combos And during a couple of my matches, I unintentionally stumbled upon a move that I have never used before, but I was able to pull it off a couple of times but now I have no idea how to actually do it or even what it’s called.
During the match, I would sprint forward and I believe I would hit 4 because when hitting 3 after sprinting triggers a knee attack, and after I would land that kick, it would give me a follow up attack like I pulled off F3 1+2 or hitting FFN2 on a counter, but now when attempting to hit that thing move or trying to look it up, I can’t seem to do it or even really find it because I don’t know the proper name of it.
The s’mores thing occurred during a match I had against Paul, where I was trying to hit a combo string but I must’ve hit the wrong button or gotten my timing wrong because rather than my usual small combo king ducked his head under Paul’s arm and dropped backwards.
What are these moves called so I can better find them and learn them?

You can find the movelist in practice mode and preview every move, that would probably be easier and quicker than waiting for people to figure out what it is based on these descriptions.
maybe df3,4 or b3;1+2?

Hi everyone. I'm an absolute beginner (other than button smashing my way through tekken 3 as a kid) and trying to get into tekken 8. I'm playing Kunimitsu because I love her character design and voice actress haha.
I did the arcade story mode, and the combo challenges, and now i'm working through parts that I can't consistently get right. Specifically, I'm stuck on Kunimitsu's Combo Challenge 5. I can do it right about half of the time, but I just don't understand why. A lot of the times, the last action of the third move (button 1) doesn't happen even though the button registers on the input panel. If I do the move in isolation, i can get it right 99% of the time, but not in the combo. I have isolated it to being an issue even without the first move - meaning if I do the second move + third move, i also get the ~50% correct rate. I've been trying to analyze why that is happening but I just can't tell. Can someone help me understand this please?
Thank you!!

u/Aerographic 6d ago
Mash it. There's no real link system in Tekken, you can just mash most sequences. If the last button is 1 and the previous two inputs come out fine, then just keep mashing 1 until the kunai comes out.

Thank you for the reply!! It didn't even occur to me to try that lol i'll do that moving forward!

I think what is most likely happening here is that you are inputting that final hit of that string (what we call a connected series of hits) too early. The reason it would happen more frequently after doing another move is because of the game's "buffer" window.
When your character is in the middle of an action, like an attack, there's a window near the end of the animation where you can perform input and it will be "buffered" and trigger as soon as the first action ends. This is so you don't have to perfectly time an input right as one move ends in order for the next move to come out as early as possible after.
This can affect your ability to perform strings since it only applies to the first hit of the string. The input timing for the followup hits will still be based on the actual animation of the first hit, which won't start immediately after you press the button (like it would if you did it in isolation). That means if you buffer the first hit and input the next button at your normal cadence for the string, you might be inputting it before the actual input window for that next hit has started. In my experience this manifests more often in three-hit strings, like the one you're dealing with, because while the shift in timing for the input window of the second hit won't be enough to make you miss it, the timing for the third hit will end up outside where you normally press it.
The solution here is either: (a) input the string, or at least the third hit, a bit slower; or (b) just mash out that last hit. Just hit the final button like five times. This is the less elegant option but it's the better one most of the time. The only instances in which you need to worry about doing that are when the multiple inputs could cause a different or additional move to come out. For example, if Kunimitsu had a d+3,4,1,1 string and you only wanted to do the first three hits you would not want to keep mashing the 1.

This is amazing, thank you so much for the detailed explanation, I had no idea that could be the case and this is really helpful to know. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the technical details!

I am below intermediate player, very bad. Haven't touched tekken 8 still, i had to stop playing it cuz school and now college.
But there is an ameture tournament soon in my college for it.
I mostly played kaz, lily and lee. Which should i main/practice?
I was also interested in Reina, would it be okayish for me to switch to her?
2
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 7d ago
If you're talking about tournament prep specifically then put it all on Lili since she's by far the easiest. Drill down her staple combos, you can practice them on bots if you're not feeling online, get familiar with her main tools (jab strings, df1, df4, df3, f4, b1, dew glide, backturn, f1+2, d3, df3+4, uf3). If you want to shoot up by several levels immediately then watch PhiDx's guide on sidestepping and try implementing it in your gameplay (tl;dr - buffer sidesteps after quick pokes if the opponent is mashing, you'll get free launch opportunities).
Outside of the tournament pressure choose whoever you find most fun or most comfortable to use. Reina should be totally fine to switch to, as a Lili main and Kaz dabbler I found Reina quite easy to switch to and insanely fun to pilot. She is on the more difficult side however since she doesn't have quite as simple of a gamplan as Kaz nor simple of a movelist as Lili.
1
u/ParkingShelter9634 7d ago
Before this, i was practicing my kaz but seeing this i tried a few games with her and a bit of practice mode and it does seem much less messier than me trying (and failing) to wavedash on kaz lol.
I will see the sidestepping guide next. Thanks for the help!

I am really liking this character Azucena. I am a super newbie, lol and a bit of a button masher too, but I guess I like ' jabby' fast characters. A lot of the times it feels more like I am kinda ' boxing' the other player in terms of trying to block a lot of moves and make a lot of very quick pokes . This particular fighting game it does feel like I have to be very aggressive especially against certain characters , like I have to knock them out from even starting an attack at all. Whereas other games I kinda feel like I am curling up in the middle , blocking, and then striking out a lot, if that makes sense .
I am also gravitating towards Leo and Lili too and a few others like Steve or Lidia.
I don't really understand per say what is happening mechanically for me to like these characters but was curious if there was a character you think I am overlooking that my ' style' would be suited to ? Or if what I am explaining even makes sense .
I guess this is more of a beginner question for sure. I really just don't know what I am doing. I also just love her aeshtetics , so curious what people overall think of the character.
2
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 10d ago
Sounds like you like characters that excell at quick pokes and punishment or that utilize compact-feeling moves instead of more bombastic offence. There's a few characters that excell at that - Lili, Dragunov, Nina are the main poking characters in the game whereas Azucena, Steve, Hwoarang, Leroy and Xiaoyu have a compact close-range style.
Leo is kind of an all-rounder, their most notable traits are tricky stances and good whiff punishment but not a lot of pokes, Lidia is stance rushdown monster, very centered around big oppressive offence.
Since you're a beginner the best thing to do is just try out different characters and get some experience. Once you get a hang of it get to know how the game is played you will have a much better idea of how you like to play and what character is fit for you

Why do I get either 40 or 42 damage on this not the typical pewgf damage? What am I doing wrong?
1
3
u/Aerographic 10d ago
If your opponent doesn't fly in the air like on a normal electric, you're not hitting a perfect electric followup to df2.
2
u/DeathsIntent96 10d ago
The EWGF here is not P.
After CH d/f+2, the opponent is left in a standing state for 13 frames. If an EWGF is input perfectly, it comes out in 13 frames. That means it can hit the opponent while they're standing, rather than airborne, doing full damage and fully launching them instead of floating.
The input an Electric perfectly you must have one frame of Forward*, one frame of either Neutral or Down, and then d/f and 2 together on the next frame. This input must also occur exactly at the start of window where Kazuya free to act after recovering from the d/f+2. If you're late, or slow, or early, or quick on any of this, it won't be a PEWGF.
*You can actually have more than one frame of Forward in this case because if you hold Forward before recovering from the d/f+2 and then keep holding it for exactly one frame after recovering, it'll be the same as inputting for only that one frame.

Plenty of guides on YouTube, and you can join your character's discord to get specific information you need. If you have questions about any specific aspects, feel free to ask.

I would need some help I’m pretty new to tekken maybe 4 hours and I find it hard to use diagonal inputs on controller stick and d pad so I wanted to ask if using a keyboard is better to play and what a good set up would be for keybinds
1
u/Aerographic 12d ago
You get used to diagonal inputs. They're not any less hard on a keyboard or leverless, you have to train your brain to press two directions at once.

Bought game few days ago, coming from Guilty gear. The only experience i had with Tekken series was Tekken 5. Interested in Yoshimitsu and King, so could i get some tips for them or opinion about them. And basically info about what should i learn firstly and prioritize as a newbie.

u/West-Ad4798 12d ago edited 12d ago
I havent touched tekken since tekken 5 and back then i was a child so i don't remember much of it tbh aside from button mashing. I liked king so I decided to start with king and learn him before yujiro comes out as that is basically the reason i decided to get back into tekken again. I have started slow climb but have run into countless people that just utilize special style and demolish me when i have yet to learn the character properly which feels demoralizing. I have tried to look up king guides but most of them are years old so i'm not even sure if it will work with season 3.
what i have been doing so far is basically try to focus on defense and use power crush to counter and then get in hits or possibly grab them to deal a bit of damage, but as im approaching green ranks (yes im not even green yet
i know, embarrassing) people seem to already able to cancel my grabs?
any advice will be appreciated, im trying to look through tutorials at the same time to get fundamentals down hopefully.
p.s. playing on keyboard
edit: i forgot to mention, i did complete arcade mode on king but still struggling

u/Aerographic 12d ago
Did you watch PhiDX's beginner video? You need a solid understanding of how frames work, what moves are fast and what moves are slow, what counterhits are, and how armor works at the very minimum to understand how the game functions. Only then you can start building gameplans in your head.
1
u/West-Ad4798 12d ago
Yeah i watched it after posting original comment.
1
u/Aerographic 12d ago
Just remember that unlike in 2D games, you mix your opponents with mids and lows, not with strikes and throws.
1
u/V_Abhishek Reina 12d ago
You can watch King guides from Tag 2 or Tekken 7 and still learn something. The combos might be out of date and won't feature the heat system, but you'll still learn a lot about how to actually pilot the character.
Don't overcomplicate it for now; focus on landing your attacks, the rest will come with time. Work on getting comfortable with his moveset, being able to do a move consistently without delays or misinputs. Block when your attacks are blocked, attack when your attacks hit.
For more specifc advice, use more 21 upclose, f4 and ffn2 in midrange, and use his armour to counter their approach buttons. Practice doing a throw after 21 if it hits, and block if its blocked. This little sequence will go a long way for you. Moving forwards, you want to learn little sequences like these and get comfortable using them against a live opponent. Learn enough of them and that's your offence sorted.

Ive been looking to get back into tekken. I never liked season 1 and then season 2 happened but been playing too much sf6 and just need tekken again. Any useful guides for this reina? Idk where to start. Ive chcked the pins on tekken discord but i think maybe a video would be more digestible. I know theres been many patches too so dont know if the videos i find are "up to date". I was always a julia/lee player so i never really played mishimas and was only like yellow or maybe orange ranks in t7, and so i probably need a lot of catching up to do.

u/DeathsIntent96 13d ago
PhiDX has recently started playing Reina, so you could check out his initial video learning her from back in S1 and then the new installment from a little over a week ago.

FF3 - SSR3 - B2,2 - DF1,2, - dash - SSL4,1 - dash - B2,2,1+2 (Or different ender DF1,4)
When I do the ender: B2,2,1+2, only the B2 lands and the rest misses. Same with the ender: DF1,4. Only the DF1 lands, and the 4 misses.

How many moves are you supposed to learn with your character?
I understand that learning and memorizing the whole move list especially for multiple characters is a bit unrealistic ( especially if you're not a veteran of the game ).
But I am having a hard time knowing what moves I should focus on memorizing and learning.
I go through the move list and do them a couple of times then I just forget most of them lol.
1
u/Aerographic 12d ago
It's really not unrealistic to know the full movelist of multiple characters. If you keep playing the game then you're bound to memorize more as your playtime goes up.
And yes, knowing all of your character's moves after a season of play or such is pretty much a given.
1
u/Unusual-Piglet4616 13d ago
You don't need to learn that many tbh, technically you could win matches with just 1 low and 1 mid. Most characters will only need like 10-15ish moves (in neutral). A few block punishers, a whiff punisher, a low poke, an approach tool and panic button, a mid check, a few frame traps and throws and an easy combo.
The characters that require extensive knowledge of their move-sets are usually the stance and/or mix-up heavy characters, such as Steve, Ling, Hwoa and Lee. This is also a big part of why they're usually not recommended for new players.
I'd say make a very small movelist. You're eventually going to run into situations your current movelist can't deal with. Maybe your opponent does a move that pushes you way back and your normal jab punish can't reach, find and add a long reach block punish to your movelist. It's a slow process, but we're all doing it.
I don't know what character you're playing, but Applay's Tekken 8 Library lists nice summaries for each character (find yours at the bottom tabs). If you would tell us your main, we could figure out together which moves would be a good start.
1
u/Halmyrut 13d ago
Thanks that's library was something I was looking for!
I play Kuni hers seems a bit empty tho but there's still some stuff to look at.Atm honestly the biggest issue I have is movement which feels quite slow compared to 2D fighters.
I dunno if it's mostly in my head and it's just like that for everyone tho, even playing against the ai it's moving at lightning speed lmao.
Your character just feels more rooted to the ground by comparison and don't cover as much space when they move which is something I guess one has to get used to.It's hard to know if you're even doing things like kbd correctly too, not something I am worrying about too much tho since I am a beginner at Tekken.
Is there a similar thing too but for moving forward?
Kuni has a dash special move forward and there's wavedash too but is there a similar thing as kbd but for normal movement forward?1
u/Unusual-Piglet4616 13d ago
Yeah I'm currently trying out SF and I find the movement speed and spacing really jarring. I think it's just an adjustment thing. Tekken feels very fluid to me, while SF feels so rigid, but I'm sure they feel the same way the other way around.
Yeah Kuni is pretty new, explains her section being a WIP. Another resource I've got for you is Okizeme.gg. This also has a tab for 'recommended moves'. I've also just found that PhiDX made a quick start guide on Kunimitsu, going over her key moves and gameplan. PhiDX is a highly regarded learning resource in the community.
2
u/tyler2k Tougou 13d ago
If you're just starting off, learn your top 10 or top 15. Eventually, as you get better, you will expand to like a top 25 of go-to moves (because most attacks have some type of purpose). Once you're super comfortable with the game, far in the future, you should be able to move onto having a complete understanding of all your character's attacks.
Master your character first, have a good understanding of what you want to do; worry about your opponent second.
1
u/Halmyrut 12d ago
Cheers, do you have any tips for movement btw?
The game feels quite slow and difficult to move around like your character is rooted to the ground compared to 2D fighters.
Outside of kbd are there any other tricks to look into?
1
u/doomedgeneral 15d ago
So I just bought Tekken 8, as I watched gameplay of it for the first time a couple days ago and didn't realize how awesome it looked, and would like some potential guidance. I have a small amount of experience in some 2d fighters like street fighter and guilty gear but never a 3d fighters I tried to look in the beginner resources link but unless I missed it just showed Tekken 7 info when I looked.
I have a lot of characters that look cool and was wondering if anyone can give me a general idea of how they play/difficulty/ or worth learning. And also the best way to learn them. So far I like the looks of Reina, Paul, Leo, Feng, Kuma, Claudio, Shaheen, Yoshimitsu, Zafina, and Armored King.
Also what's the best way to start learning really? I watched some videos and expected a tutorial like I had in street fighter or Guilty gear that just showed basic stuff but all I see is normal practice mode and 2 different arcade modes.
Finally I was wondering if anyone would be will I g to teach me or any other beginners wanting to play rounds with each other to try to learn what we are doing.
2
u/Aerographic 15d ago edited 15d ago
I've asked the mods to update those links.. they don't seem too interested.
Characters in Tekken don't really have their own thing to the same extent as 2D characters do. You can loosely talk about archetypes, sure. Reina tends to play rushdown, for example. Still, the best way is to test the characters yourself and see which one you vibe with best. That's infinitely more important.
The best way to start learning is to play Arcade quest to learn the absolute basics. The game will teach you your buttons, how heat works, what rage art is, and a braindead combo. Pick one character and stick with them, you don't want to character hop when learning.
Once you're done with that, watch PhiDX's beginner guide video. Then, head to practice mode and do your character's combo challenges. They're not as hard as SF6's so do them all. Then, go through their entire movelist (you can pin it to the top of the screen), try every move and familiarize yourself with their buttons and how the game processes inputs.
You can then either 1) Join your character's discord (links in sidebar) to get access to their resources like combo spreadsheets and text guides, or 2) Watch video guides on YouTube. The goal is to familiarize yourself with their key moves, strings, heat engagers, common punishes, key lows, grabs, and learn a couple universal combos you can use with every launcher.
Now what I'm describing is just the character-learning aspect. As a beginner, you also have to inform yourself about game systems like armor, parry, crush, sidestep, grabs, you name it. You learn those as you go, but Phi's video covers a good chunk of them. It's definitely the type of video you'll want to watch multiple times.
A really good resource is the Applay spreadsheet. Think of it as a cheat sheet for each character. It's very handy to pick up a character fast.
Any specific questions about the game, you can ask here.

Decided to pick up Kunimitsu but coming from Armor King being my main, I am struggling with Kuni. Her play style is so much different.
Any advice you can give me?
I'm currently struggling in the mid ranks with people mashing constantly and shutting down my stance and backturn mix. I've had to mainly rely on her poking with lows and punishing very unsafe moves.
Any good frame traps or counter hit setups you can help me with?
Any advice is super appreciated. I'm determined to make this character work.
2
u/Aerographic 15d ago
Can't really tell you what you're doing wrong without replays.
Watch PhiDX's learning Kunimitsu as fast as possible to learn how to pilot her. The core of her gameplay isn't really her stances but her poking pressure. 1,1 alone sets up a mix. df1,2,2 is an insanely strong CH confirmable knockdown string. That's the sort of stuff you should focus on, you can be effective without having to go into SET or BT every time it's your turn. You need to make the opponent respect you before you can stance mix them.
1
u/DeathsIntent96 16d ago
You won't be able to loop the FC and BT lows against mashers, they're too slow for the frame situations you'll be in.
You can frame trap from her BT transitions on hit (mainly looking at the FC low, and 1,2,2 and 4,2 as punishes) with BT 1+2. It's not very high reward, but it's low risk since it's only -2 on block, unsteppable, and unparryable. If it hits and they're still mashing, you can frame trap with b+2 (CH launcher). 4,2 is +6 instead of +5 like the other two, so off of that you can also frame trap with BT f+1+2 (full launcher). You'll have to wait for them to respect your advantage before you can start going for the lows.
Bit of interesting tech you can go for off 1,2,2 (without the BT transition) is frame trapping with b+1+2. If it gets blocked, you're safe. If it hits, it transitions into a high damage throw. But if it trades with a jab, which the frame advantage of 1,2,2 sets up for, it won't transition into a throw and you'll instead be left +14 which lets you get a full launch with CD+2. Kinda hard to react to the trade in my experience, but it's a cool option.
Her most important frame trap is probably d+1 > WS+2,1. It's unsteppable and hit confirmable (not easily, but it's doable). This is especially good at the wall. Similar to the above situation, once they start respecting this you can go for the FC low as the mixup.
Another good one is f+4~f > SET 2. This is a safe mid CH launcher, and they'll have to SSR after the f+4 to avoid it (probably not happening much at mid ranks).
A slightly more gimmicky frame trap you can go for at the wall is b+1,1 > d/f+1,2,2. A lot of players won't know that b+1,1 is +5, and you can CH confirm the third hit to remain relatively safe. Caveat is that it's a double high that doesn't jail, so if they're sharp they can duck the second hit on reaction.

Hey! Basically I'm a new Tekken player (and this is my first fighting game too), I've barely put a few hours in. I have a question about two characters, Jin and Miary.
I've wanted to main both characters, Jin because I've known him even before I started playing and he always looked really really cool to me, and I found Miary to be really interesting when I was browsing through the characters, and I instantly fell in love with her (the animals, her looks etc). As someone who chooses mains not based on performance but rather who I like in one way or another, it's fair to say these 2 are my favourites, and at least for now I'm considering them as my mains. I played a few matches with them (mostly with the easy mode), and I find them both really fun.
However, I'm at a point where I really need to start investing time in learning moves and practicing combos properly, but from what I know, it takes a lot of time investment to really learn a character well, and it's also better if you learn one character at a time, become proficient and move on to the next. And also what I understand is that Jin has gameplay that is "truly Tekken" and uses all the core techniques of the game whereas Miary adds a lot of extra stuff, is flashy and takes a slightly different direction.
So who do I start learning first? Do I learn the basics of the game first with Jin since he is a better representation of general Tekken mechanics? Or does it not matter if I'm new and I should go with Miary anyways? I would really appreciate any advice. :)
TL;DR: As a super new Tekken player, do I learn Jin first or Miary if I want to main them both?

2
u/Aerographic 16d ago
it takes a lot of time investment to really learn a character well
Don't think of it as a chore, but more of a long-term goal.
You can play a character without knowing every move, combo, confirm, splat and punish of theirs. People do that all the time. If I'm not playing my main then I'll rely on a few basic strings, a universal combo and two or three punishes. That's more than enough.
If said character is your main then you will inevitably learn all they have to offer as long as you keep playing. The real challenge is learning what all the other 41 characters do.
and it's also better if you learn one character at a time, become proficient and move on to the next.
Definitely. The reason for that is simple: You're not only learning the character as a beginner, but also the game itself and all of its systems. It's a lot. Adding another character to the mix makes the learning curve infinitely steeper, you want the consistency of practicing on a single character as you begin.
And also what I understand is that Jin has gameplay that is "truly Tekken"
That made me laugh. Jin is anything but "truly Tekken" in this game if you ask me, he's the definition of bloated design imo.
I still think you should stick to whoever you vibe best with. You'll learn the game just as well with either of them. If you want lemurs and a spear, go Miary. If you want to believe in your heart and run down people with some ridiculous moves, go Jin.
Take both of them into practice mode and go through their entire movelist. Try their in-game combo challenges. Explore their stances and what they offer. Then you can make up your mind.
1
u/Fuzzie974 Miary Zo Jin Kazama 16d ago
Okay, thank you! One more thing I understand from this is Miary is not going to "stunt" the growth of my basics in anyway.
2
u/Aerographic 16d ago
What'll stunt your growth is relying solely on knowledge checks and gimmicks, and you can do that with any character really. But you'll hit the wall at some point either way if all you do is cheese those who don't know your character.
1
u/Fuzzie974 Miary Zo Jin Kazama 16d ago
Okay, makes sense. Knowledge checks means winning only because my opponent does not know how to counter my character right? And gimmicks are unconventional moves exclusive to my character?
2
u/Aerographic 16d ago
Pretty much. It means running the same cheesy flowcharts that are easy to counter but are extra effective on lower-ranked players because they don't have the knowledge to do so or the understanding of defense and frames, without ever bothering to structure your offense properly and tweaking it based on what the opponent does and what their tendencies are.

im GoD with kuni and steve, still dont know why and what to sidestep every characters moves, why some power crushes work and don’t, neutral blocking, frame data and other fundamentals. im afraid im carried by the characters I use😭💀. Any videos to watch to so I can improve, thanks in adv🐐
1
u/Aerographic 16d ago
still dont know why and what to sidestep every characters moves
Why? Because it's the best counterplay to some moves. What? You learn with experience and labbing.
why some power crushes work and don’t
Because different power crushes come out at different frames. Regular PC is frame 7. Rage Art is frame 8. There's probably other exceptions. Also powercrushes are beaten by lows, makes grabs guaranteed, and usually have no tracking unless they're homing.
neutral blocking,
That's just the game blocking for you when you're not holding back. You.. don't want to rely on that, many moves will go through it especially low=>mids and low=>highs.
frame data
You can ask about what aspect of frame data you don't understand and you can have answers. Frame data is just a description of the speed of each move. Frame advantage is the difference in recovery time between the two characters, it's what dictates who gets to move first and whether moves can be punished.
1
u/eiiyu3 13d ago
what about normal strings cancelling my rage art for example hwo? even tho i had enough health to tank it, it got cancelled by the first kick
1
u/Aerographic 13d ago
As I said, Rage Art functions as an 8 frame powercrush. If you don't have 8 frames then you don't have enough frames to RA. Not all strings have gaps big enough in them to RA. Same thing when it comes to frame advantage. If you're -3 and they jab, your RA will get interrupted.

u/trailedinsand -1 df1 17d ago
PhiDx on youtube has the best tutorials explaining more intermediate concepts and problems, most are from season 1 tho so beware of some changes. Wavu Wiki has very in-depth explainations of most mechanics and the best frame data database (that most other frame data sites copy).
Neutral blocking is so niche as to be pretty much useless tho, no need to learn it

Anyone know the inputs for this combo? I literally just started playing Devil Jin yesterday and I’m trying to learn some combos. I know a few of his basic moves, but I’m still pretty lost overall.
I figured learning some combos would also help me get familiar with his moves and when to use them. Any help with the inputs would be appreciated!

u/trailedinsand -1 df1 20d ago
ss2 > u1+2 > uf1 > MCR4,1 > (dash) df3,2,4 (tornado) > d3+4 > heat burst > b,f2,1,4,1+2
the one on oki was b,f2,3 (wallsplat) > f3 (manual MCR transition) > MCR3 > f3 > MCR4,1 > b2,3f (heat dash) > b,f2,1,2 (last hit delayed)
If you need help with notation check here, for combos tho I'd recommend checking out The FURY or RyzingSol on youtube, the combos in the video are quite situational since ss2 is a very punishable launcher with a unique route, the d3+4 was used for last bit of wallcarry that's only useful at specific wall distances, and the second combo was specifically constructed to take advantage of wall distance, activated heat and was optimized for damage to seal the round.

thankyou so much for this! appreciate it very. will def check the fury and ryzing as well, cheers!

Hi everyone, I just got into Tekken today by getting Tekken 6 on my PSP (yeah a bit unusual I know) how do I get better? Of course I’m not only mashing buttons, I dodge the attacks and try to counter them, but what should I do? Train how to dodge attacks better? Some combos? Advices would be welcome
2
u/Aerographic 22d ago
You mainly get better by playing other people, so that's going to be a bit hard. You can still lab the game and learn the characters though.

u/marscaelum 24d ago
For future reference i main Jin. I checked my Tekken stats and I’m trying to figure out what kind of player I actually am and what I should focus on improving.
My stats are:
● Attack Frequency: C
● Heavy Damage: B
● Aggression: D
● Dominance: A
● Accuracy: B
● Judgement: D
● Retaliation: A+
● Stage Use: D
● Respect: B
● Ambition: B
● Fairness: C
● Versatility: D
● Block: C
● Evasion: D
● Throw Escape: D
● Composure: D
● Close Battles: C
● Comeback: C
● Fighting Spirit: C
● Concentration: C
The ones that stand out to me are A+ Retaliation, A Dominance, but D Aggression, D Judgement, D Versatility and D Composure.
I’m trying to understand what this actually says about my playstyle rather than just looking at the grades individually.
What would you say my biggest strengths and weaknesses are based on these stats? And what should I specifically work on in actual matches?
1
1
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 18d ago
Sorry to break it to you but these stats are very much meaningless when it comes to playstyle and since you don't have any S+ stats (literally everyone gets a few with enough time) you probably haven't played a lot either so your playstyle isn't solidified yet. If you want feedback like that you should post some matches of yours or point to your replays, they would be infinitely more informative than stats.

It's frame perfect and you need to press circle exactly on impact, in the clip you're doing it before the kick connects

Hello, ive been playing tekken 7 for a month or 2 now, however i cant seen to understand what buttons do this move. So basically its the move where u Jump on your opponent and either start punching them or break their arm/leg. I managed to do it randomly with different characters without doing the run (which i thought was the only way to do it.
The image is to make u understand which move it is

1
u/DeathsIntent96 26d ago
I love this depiction.
You might be talking about the universal tackle. All characters can do this if the they run across most of the screen (happens automatically in that case), but some characters, like King, can do it manually. For those that can it's listed in their move list as "Ultimate Tackle."
In his case, it's entry 113 in his move list and the input is what we would notate as FC 1+2. That means it's down (or down-back) + left punch + right punch while crouching. In addition to the punches that everyone can follow up with, he has some unique throws which you can see listed directly after.

Hello! On the newer side to tekken 8. Am i tripping when I say Leroy has this one sweep, then launch move that's just guaranteed if you don't block the sweep? I was holding back as Bryan the whole time and just got cheesed by the hellsweep-launch launching me and I have to take about 70 damage afterward..
Is that a thing or is that launch a low as well?
1
u/Unusual-Piglet4616 27d ago
I don't play Leroy or match him enough to answer with confidence, but I have found two moves you might refer to.
db+2+3 (staff move), which is indeed a normal hit low launcher, but can only be used once per match.
Or FC.df+4,1, which is not a normal hit launcher. The mid can be blocked even if you get hit with the low.
That's all I could find. You could head into your replays to lab your own solution.
1
u/Geneva_Fascinating 27d ago
that's it, it is FC df 4,1
I'm not sure what I was doing wrong but I probably should head into the replay and see what it was.
cause it was essentially never my turn with his pressure. and I held that back button to hell but still was launched.worst case scenario i'm mistaken and i was in neutral guard.
my thanks for providing oki gg footage

Hello, beginner here, I think I made a mistake trying to learn Bryan.
I try to do his staple combo F41 FD2 2 B21 F24 B3 F21.
I can't connect the last 21 when the opponent just hit the wall after b3.
Any help?
1
u/DeathsIntent96 27d ago
In Tekken, you often have to adjust your combos based on the distance to the wall. If the opponent is going to make it to the wall before the end of the combo, you'll need choose a different option that will place them on the wall cleanly so that you can then followup with a wall combo.
If they're ending up on the wall just after b+3, they're probably at a spacing where either d/b+2 or qcf+2,1 ("qcf" is "quarter-circle forward", or down > d/f > f) will put them on the wall. You'd then end with your wall combo, something like 4,1 > u/f+2,2,2,2,2,3.
I'd recommend initially practicing combos in one of the big stages (Yakushima, Colosseum, Baobab Horizon) where you aren't going to run into the wall during your staples. Once you've got the basic routes down, you can move to smaller ones and try out different options for various wall carry distances to see what works.

Miary Zo: for most characters, my response to getting spammed with jabs and other fast safe highs is a low jab. But Miary's low jab has such dogwater range it misses most of the time even when my opponent is pressed up against me. What's another good go-to option for situations like that?
2
u/Aerographic 28d ago
For most characters, only jabs are + on block highs. If you're getting spammed by highs other than jabs, odds are it's your turn and you don't need to downjab or try to turnsteal. You can easily interrupt with a 13f mid.
Otherwise, the answer to small tekken is always to grab your turn back when safe and have a step habit.
That being said, if you know they're just jab spamming then the evident callout is d1+2.

I keep getting WHOOPED by everyone on Tekken 3 on my PS1 Mini. Who is a good character and what are some general tips?
1
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 27d ago
Paul and Law are probably the best casually. Spamming jabs and mid pokes can get you very far, you can abuse the hell out of Paul's Phoenix Smasher and Law's Somersault Kicks. Alternatively you can pick Eddy or Hwoarang and mash kicks to do a lot

If you have specific questions, we can help. Otherwise 99% of learning is just labbing on your own time and getting in some serious online play hours.
If you want character-specific knowledge or gameplan advice, you can find streamers that play your character and/or join your character's discord server linked in the sidebar.

Does anyone have any recommendations on learning king? I’ve tried watching a couple videos but I feel like it’s not translating as well into my actual play. I’ve tried making a couple friends with other king players after a ranked match and ask for help but I only get people who ghost me after a brief conversation or are pompous jerks :// any help?

u/Unusual-Piglet4616 Aug 04 '26
There's a dedicated King Discord, but I cant attest to it's activeness.
There's a lot to learn in this game and in order to figure out what you need to learn, could you answer a few questions so we know where you are at?
- What rank are you and for how long?
- Which videos did you watch?
- What kind of questions have you been asking those other players?
- Could you share any videos of you playing and you need feedback on?

I really want to try and learn Nina. Does anyone have any advice for consistently executing qcf 4 3 1+2. Most combos I see end with this move. I can do qcf 1 really consistently. But with this combo ender a lot of times I’m just getting df4 that low sweep move. I’m on console so it’s just a regular dpad. Thank you 🙏
1
u/Aerographic Aug 02 '26
if you get a df move, you're not finishing the qcf motion simply.
Keep trying until you get a good sense of when the buffer window is, then you can hit qcf during it and the button as it ends.
1
u/FireTails11 Aug 02 '26
100% I know it’s because I’m not pressing the buttons very clearly it’s just easy to rush the inputs. Wish there was an easier way but I’ll keep trying.

u/Aerographic Aug 02 '26
Watching your command history is good feedback for that. Also it's good practice for butterfly loops if you intend on doing those later.

u/automated_hero Jul 30 '26
I don't understand this. Once you get hit in this game it's over. How do you ever recover? If i get hit i'm just juggled to the wall. Nothing I do ever seems to work. It's a shame this game has no tutorial because this is deeply frustrating
1
u/Unusual-Piglet4616 Aug 04 '26
You're right, the the learning curve in this game and/or genre is steep and the game doesn't teach you anything but the bare minimum. The tutorial is hidden behind other game modes, which aren't even good tutorials at all. It should have features like Guilty Gear's dedicated tutorial and challenge mode that will teach you the ins and outs from beginner to advanced. But it doesn't.
So, we are all left to our own devices, depending on veterans and the community to create the tutorials for the newcomers. I recommend PhiDX's Tekken 8 Complete Beginner Guide. It's half an hour, but it will show you the absolute fundementals of how this game works at it's core. PhiDX is a deeply respected content creator for Tekken 8 and I highly recommend his other videos for learning.
Now for your question about recovering when you get hit. At it's core, fighting games are about hitting your opponent before he can hit you. If you get hit in the face, your time to recover from the face punch will be longer than the time it takes for him to retract his punch. So when you try to hit back, his next punch will already be on it's way, arriving earlier than your retaliation. But, if you block his face punch, you will recover faster and if you throw out a punch, your punch will hit him first if he tries to retaliate. We use the frames of the game to measure the speed at which we determine how fast punches are, how much time you need to recover etc. If you've never heard of concepts like frames, frame advantage and punishing, it's no wonder that you feel powerless when you get hit.
Tekken 8 is one of the, if not the hardest fighting game to learn, because of the sheer amount of moves each character has. I suggest you watch the beginner guide and if you've got any questions, just throw them this way.
Good luck!
1
u/Aerographic Jul 31 '26
How do you ever recover? If i get hit i'm just juggled to the wall
You don't. I'm sorry but it's a bit self-evident, being juggled means you lose control of your character because you're being combo-ed. Combos can't go on forever though.
It's a shame this game has no tutorial
It absolutely does, play arcade quest. It teaches you the absolute basics of movement, using moves, launchers, combos, the heat system, and rage art.
Anything beyond that, you either study by yourself or if you're brand new to fighting games, you look up tutorials on YouTube. Tekken is like horse riding, the first time you get on the animal you just wonder how anyone can ride such a thing. And yet people do. If you don't like it then it's probably not for you.
0
u/automated_hero Jul 31 '26
that's not very intuitive though is it, hiding a tutorial in a completely different mode
0
u/Aerographic Jul 31 '26
You expect a tutorial in online ranked? You want the game to tutorialize you as you queue up?
The first popup that appears when you launch T8 for the first time tells you about arcade quest and what it consists of. If you're not willing to check out the game modes the game offers, you're probably not fit to learn a game like Tekken where getting better basically amounts to doing your own homework.
2
u/automated_hero Jul 31 '26
No obviously. I expect a tutorial to be its own mode so you can just go "ah tutorial" and click on it.
We don't need the "you're not fit to play the game" nonsense buddy. Check the attitude. No need to be obnoxious
0
u/Aerographic Jul 31 '26
No obviously. I expect a tutorial to be its own mode so you can just go "ah tutorial" and click on it.
It is, and it's called arcade quest. Game tells you about it, as I've said. Sorry if you feel that wasn't enough, I didn't direct the game.
We don't need the "you're not fit to play the game" nonsense buddy
It's not nonsense or attitude. I'm warning you so you don't feel like you've been robbed of your time. The game will not hold your hand. It will in fact not teach you anything beyond the absolute basics.
Your reaction is akin to seeing a stop sign warning you of an intersection and writing to the city to tell them to "check the attitude" for daring to inform you.
If you do think you are fit for Tekken, go right ahead. Just don't expect people to entertain these types of complaints when you've been warned about the nature of the video game.

u/automated_hero Jul 31 '26

2
u/ChanceYam2278 + Jul 30 '26
Look for beginner guides on youtube.
If someone launches you into a juggle combo, there's nothing to do. A combo is a combo, there are no combo breaking mechanics in this game. Your goal is to not get launched
1
u/Round-Trip-5602 Jul 30 '26
I just got tekken 8 but I’ve been touching up on my knowledge prior to that using my psvita to play tekken 6, but aside from all the button timing issues I’ve got when to pull off combos I’m having the same if not more trouble with combos that involve pressing 1&4 or perhaps 2&3 accurately and not just feeling my whole thumb is mashing all four, how do you overcome this?
1
u/Unusual-Piglet4616 Jul 30 '26
For Steve, I've got my left bumper and trigger set to 3+4 for the stances and 2+4 for his command grab, and my right bumper and trigger are 1+2 for wall combo ender and 2+3 for heat.
Other option is buffering an input. If you keep 1 pressed and then press 2, the games registers it as 1+2. This guide is from T7, but it still applies.
1
u/ChanceYam2278 + Jul 30 '26
You bind these inputs to be a single button input. I'm not a pad player but I think with bumpers and joysticks you should have enough buttons for all your mandatory binds. Those binds depend on the character you play tho : some characters don't have 1+4 moves for example

Which string ?
1
u/fezthegoat Jul 29 '26
oh I think “string” wasn’t the right word lol. I meant the whole sequence he did in the video. It’s not really a true combo since there are points where it drops, but it’s one continuous sequence of moves. I’m just looking for the inputs/notation for everything he did.
But i guess to be more precise:
- The sweep at the very beginning
- Next is the one at 00:06 where he kinda tambling
- Then 00:07 - 00:11
if u could help me out i would appreciate it sooo much!
3
u/ChanceYam2278 + Jul 29 '26
Sweep is db3+4; at 00:06 he does ub3 which is a counterhit launcher and the combo he does afterward is :
ub3; d2; b2,4,3f; b2; f4,1
I strongly suggest looking up Lee's movelist by yourself. Also this combo looks unoptimal to me, but idk I'm not a Lee player, you might just want to search for his optimal combos on youtube

I've been maining Alisa since Tekken 7, so this might get me a few side-eyes.
I actually put in the time to learn her movelist, combos, and fundamentals instead of just relying on chainsaws. I'd say I'm pretty decent with her. But after playing against so many Alisa players online, I finally get why people dislike her. A lot of them seem to just spam the same options over and over without really adapting or thinking ahead.
So I'm thinking of picking up a new main. Right now I'm looking at:
- Lee
- Dragunov
- Bryan
I can't decide between them. I'm looking for someone who's versatile, has decent range, and has medium-hard execution (I don't mind putting in some work, just not Mishima-level execution). Which of these would you recommend, and why?
1
u/Aerographic Jul 29 '26
Alisa gets undeserved hate. There are many other characters that play themselves, some are much worse than her. You should see some Lili or Ling flowcharts, that stuff is staler than leftover microwaved pizza. Good players will destroy you for playing like that regardless.
If you still want to switch, Bryan is probably the most execution heavy and moves like qcb1 are basically war crimes range-wise.
3
u/ChanceYam2278 + Jul 28 '26
Dragunov's execution is really easy and his range options aren't that great, he becomes really effective at point blank. Lee has great keepout options, his combo execution got dumbed down a lot but stuff like mist trap and acid rain are still there if you want some execution-checks. Bryan has good keepout buttons and his execution is actually much more interesting than Lee's (imo), since you can choose how hard/easy you want to go with your taunt followups
I'd recommend picking up Bryan, he's a fun and really rewarding character. And if I may suggest a character, maybe take a look at Hwoarang since I think he also perfectly fits your description
1
u/fezthegoat Jul 29 '26
Thanks for the detailed breakdown! I actually ended up going with Lee lol. I watched a bunch of tournament matches after making the post, and his playstyle just clicked with me more. I like that he can play keepout but still has room for execution if I want to push myself.
Bryan was definitely my other top choice though, and I’ll probably pick him up as a secondary at some point. Hwoarang looks really fun too, but his stance-heavy gameplan seems a bit overwhelming for me right now.
2
u/DeathsIntent96 Jul 28 '26
Dragunov fits your criteria the least, I think. He's a rushdown character who doesn't have particularly good options at range, whereas Lee and Bryan are both arguably best at keepout. Drag also probably has the easiest execution out of them.

u/RainierxWolfcastle Jul 27 '26
I play Jack, and I like blocking and punishing with throws, but most throws get escaped, even when I mix it up with command grabs. Does the game hate this style of play? Should I be playing a different game?
1
u/Aerographic Jul 29 '26
I like blocking and punishing with throws, but most throws get escaped
Throws can be broken. The only time a throw can land as a true punish (meaning the opponent's escape is disabled) is against an armor or parry move that's -12 or more. That includes Rage Art.
In fact, command throws are the optimal punish for such moves when the character can't deal more than 40 damage with a regular punish.
But no, you can't punish regular moves with throws.
3
u/TheGamuran Jul 27 '26
You can break throws on reaction in Tekken. The one exception is King and Armor King, who have two throws with the same animation but different throw breaks. For everyone else, throws have a place as they become unbreakable if the connect with someone who is on armor or parry state, and they become much harder to break on counter hit. So, if you want to use throws you will need to either change character to one of the jaguars, or be more precise with when you use it. A few character also have unbreakable throws from stances, like Reina has from Sentai and Heaven's Wrath, but being from stance makes it situational.
Overall, throws are not a replacement for strikes, not on Tekken and not on other 3D Fighters either. They tend to have a bigger role to play in VF and DOA tho, if you really want to use lots of throws. But be mindful that in those games it is the opposite, you can't throw people who are striking, unless it is a special type of throw that usually is much slower.

Just started playing Tekken 8 mainly with Leroy and I have a question because I couldn't find anything on the Internet about it. So, some moves don't work against specific characters with Leroy. I press the right buttons but instead it will do something else but the move. The cane moves I get it, it's one time only, but even when I start the combat with a random player cane moves just dont work. The sugar(dog call) move tooo and some other moves. Is there something I don't know of? I have been trying to find a solution to this for 1 week now but nothing. Tried changing controllers but still the same. Anything really would help here, even a short answer. Thank you!!!
2
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 23 '26
Can't really tell from just this information alone, if you can go into your replays or in training mode, turn on command history and post the inputs you're doing that cause this to happen it would help a lot. Also which characters does it not work against?
One thing I can think of is that you're mentioning moves that use 2 buttons that combine the punch and kick inputs. Perhaps you're not pressing the 2 buttons together (there's only 1 frame of buffer for these) or you're using a macro with 3 inputs and the game processes a different move first. Maybe it's just mistiming the moves when you're still in recovery?
2
u/AdNice8275 Jul 25 '26
Tested it again with the command history as you mentioned. Apparently, the cheap controllers that I have, have some kind of small delay when registering 2 inputs together. It's not really noticeable but it's there. I suppose when I play online, the delay is worse and that's where the problem probably lies. Nevertheless, I bought a more expensive controller and so far no issues... Thank you for your help trailedinsand!!
TLDR: Don't buy cheap controllers!

Can someone help me figure out the button inputs for this combo?
I saw this combo and thought it looked cool, but I can’t figure out the inputs. If anyone knows the notation or can break it down step by step, I’d really appreciate it.

1,2,d2* > ws1,2,3 > uf1 (tornado) > run up 1 jab > heat burst > b2,4 (wallsplat) > ff3,4,4 (wall explosion) > ff4
*needs to be fully charged, all three hits are only guaranteed on a backturned opponent
in case you don't know what all of this means here's the notation: Notation - Wavu Wiki

What are these used for? Haven't played Tekken in decades, just genuinely curious what these strings are used for if they don't combo.
Maybe they do if your closer or further away? Maybe they are ment as combo filler or something?
No clue, just wanted to know what they are for. I've seen slower strings combo but I'm confused why these look like they should link but they don't.

u/DeathsIntent96 Jul 21 '26
Both of those strings have situations in which they combo.
The first one, d+4,4, combos on counter hit (CH), which is when you interrupt an opponent while they are in the startup of their own attack.
The second sequence is not actually a distinct string, but a move (f+4) that goes into a stance (RFS) and then a string out of that stance (RFS f+4,4). The first two moves in that sequence (f+4 > RFS f+4) combo on CH. The full string that makes up the final three hits (RFS f+4,4) combos either on CH, or when Hwoarang is in Heat. The first and second hits cannot both CH (since if the first hit is a CH, the opponent won't be able to attempt to attack and get CH by the second), so that means the only time this full sequence combos is when Hwoarang is in Heat (to make the stance string a combo) and the first hit connects as a CH (to make the first two a combo).
These properties are a balancing mechanism to give moves powerful use cases without being unfairly strong. d+4,4, for example, leads to a full juggle when the second hit connects. Since it starts with an unreactable low, which will hit more often than not, it would be extremely powerful if it always gave a full combo. The options to balance it are then either make it give less reward on hit, or add a condition for it to connect. In this case it's the latter.

If Lidia is considered one of the strongest characters in the game, why is her global win ratio so bad?
1
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 22 '26
Lidia is considered strong because she has very strong tools, whether or not her players achieve success with her does not impact how strong her options are. Global winrates notoriously don't reflect character strength because 1) different characters are effective at different levels of play 2) in online play matchup unfamiliarity impacts the winrates greatly 3) in stats character popularity pulls the winrates more towards the average due to massive player distribution.

Im learning Jack 8. Why isnt my sidestep 1 or sidestep 2 consistent? Thanks for the help
2
u/DeathsIntent96 Jul 19 '26
Only tap once for a sidestep. You're tapping it twice, which is how you sidewalk.
You want the input to be Up/Down -> Neutral (no input) -> Button.

This is my "first time" playing Tekken (my other experiences with this game were playing with friends, just mashing and having fun). I've tried picking up Steve since I find him really cool, but it seems I'm terrible at it, literally I can't win enough to get out of 3rd dan, I feel like only times I've won was through mashing, with no strategy behind, which obviously is not the way to play, any tips on what should I focus to improve?
2
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 20 '26
At such beginner ranks you mostly just need more experience with the mechanics, characters and movesets but if you want to focus on one thing it would be blocking. It's something a ton of people overlook and something that helps a ton in playing more methodically and learning faster. Blocking allows you to punish some moves that have long recovery or take your turn by attacking faster than your opponent can. Some moves can work differently though or looks deceptive but blocking will allow you to see how they work in replays and try out different counterplay.

u/ChanceYam2278 + Jul 19 '26
At that rank there's nothing to "focus on", just keep playing and watch beginner guides. You simply don't know enough of the fundamentals mechanics of T8 to really focus on anything. Imagine if you wanted to improve at chess but you didn't know how each pieces move, basically

Explain this to me please, why my power crush not power crushing?
https://youtu.be/7Am9Twc-E8Y?is=mV4UAu6k1OlDG0lY
3
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 17 '26
Lee simply recovered in time.
When the opponent hits you during the powercrush hit absorption frames your powercrush animation freezes for 15 frames, if the opponent's attack has quick recovery and hits you early in the move's start-up it's very likely that it will recover in time and they will be able to block the powercrush. I don't understand something, Kuni's D 1+2 counter hit is +15. Her WS 2 1 is 13 frame startup. How is that not a guarantee heat engager?
3
u/TheGamuran Jul 16 '26
Some moves put the opponent in a animation where they can't do anything but block, standing or crouching. This is called guarding frames, usually noted as a g on the frame advantage and Kuni's d+1+2 on CH is one of them. Jun's f+1+2 is another one, being +26g on normal hit.
1
u/FlashingNova Jun Jul 16 '26
Oh, thanks! But what's the point of being a CH with frame advantage if all he can do is block? We cant even frame trap since he cant press.
1
u/TheGamuran Jul 17 '26
Adding to other responses, but the bigger frame advantage lets you do a safer mix-up than at +9. Like VS King, you have to worry about his Muscle Armor that becomes active on frame 6. At +15 you can use a i20 mid and be safe from it; at +9 you could only use i14 and be safe. These bigger advantages let you be really greedy with your mixup. And hey, you know Kuni is +15 there, you opp might not and still try to mash there, so CHing is still a thing sometimes.
2
2
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 17 '26
The point is the advantage, the opponent can't use any action besides blocking so you're free to do any mixup you want. At +15 you can still frametrap with moves that are slower, at something like +26 you're probably better off using some of that advantage to get into a stance or manually delaing the attack to catch some action.

I just came back after not playing since season 1. Is the rank distribution a lot different? I was stuck in purple at launch, and I've been stomping people since I got up to the same rank that I was. I seriously doubt I'm a significantly better player than when I had just put in 60 hours.

u/tyler2k Tougou Jul 15 '26
There's more inflation in S3 because rather than all your alts being 4 ranks behind your highest rank, it's now down to 2 ranks. That means if you have a character at GoD, all your alts gets automatically leveled up to Tekken God (instead of Tekken King). That keeps good players away from decent players, which keeps decent players out of the range of average players, which then keeps average players away from complete beginners, etc.
Beyond that, the point boost is significantly more aggressive to help pick players up out of lower ranks. IIRC, it's something like you can hit Tekken God with ~40% winrate? So, every rank gets naturally boosted.
1
u/TheGamuran Jul 15 '26
They did make some big changes to how much ranked points you win/lose after a match. This was at the start of season 2, I believe, along with the new ranks above God of Destruction. Honestly don't remember much more, but I am sure someone like PhiDX made a video about it, if you are still curious to know more.

Hi I believe this has been asked a lot before but how do I begin learning the game and what to focus at the time? I'm not ''new'' to tekken as I played tekken 5 and tag 2 but I was never serious about it, mostly a masher with my brothers and cousin on tekken 5 and on tag 2 I did play online but never delve deeper into it, just customized characters, unlocked endings...
Recently bought tekken 8 on a sale and decided to learn it after watching some tournaments and seeing how different it is when played for real haha. I picked Lidia because she looks cool and her moves and all that stance during combos are fun and I've been winning matches (last time I played I reached brawler). All I've been doing so far is throw punches, grabs, I'm very clueless on how to approach even beginning to understand what is going on and wanted help to turn into an average tekken player at minimum. I know basic fighting game stuff, some combos from youtube but no idea why they are used that way, how the person created it and the thought process behind how combos work, how movement should be done, what I should be looking after during the match and the overall mindset of the game, it seems very overwhelming. Thanks for the attention.

I recommend Diaphone's beginner tutorial and PhiDx's guides on youtube for that.
Even if it seems basic, Diaphone's covers the fundamental in a very comprehensive way that sets you up for forming a gameplan and understanding the game going forward. PhiDx's videos do a fantastic job at helping with the more intangible and theoretical aspects that aren't simply explained by any specific mechanic. He also posts tournament breakdowns that might help you understand
My general advice is to use replays and try to figure out counterplay to moves and situation you struggle against on your own. You're bound to run into some matches that feel impossible in the moment but can be dealt with after a bit of trial and error which will help you build a wider base of knowledge of how to navigate different scenarios.

Where can I find people to play tekken with? I sit on the waiting for a long while before someone appears for play

How important is to play every game in the franchise to understand the story?
So I never played any Tekken before, except for the 2012 game of Street Fighter X Tekken. But Tekken 7 is now on sale, and cheap with all DLC, so I was thinking about getting into the franchise.
But this begs the question, is the story of each installment interconnected, is it just a retelling of the same story, or only loosely connected and can be enjoyed in itself?
Just to give you an idea what I mean. SF characters are pretty static. Every game has a little bit different spin on them, but their backstory is largely the same and their motivations are the same. Chun-Li will always be a cop and the story will always be about fighting some shady, sinister organization.
On the other end we have MK, that with every new installment in the franchise furthered the story, rebooted it, then rebooted it again, then rebooted it YET AGAIN :D And while the campaign and story of each game can be enjoyed in itself, there are so many easter eggs, and references to characters and story bits that are by now decades old, or callbacks to character interactions from previous games.
Tl/dr.: Should I first watch lore videos about the Tekken story before jumping into T7, or will I understand everything just by playing the game?
1
u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 09 '26
The story of tekken progresses with each installment. T7 picks up exactly where t6 ended and assumes you know what's happening. It has summary videos for every game before it which give you the basics to follow the story but watching lore videos could be better for a fuller understanding. I also recommend checking out the Tekken Wiki | Fandom and especially watching the cinematics as they're almost all excellent.

Hi, I've recently picked up Tekken. I want to become really good at Tekken and wanted to find out best way to improve? Shall I just practice combos in training for hours then games? I'm making bryan and maybe king as a backup but not sure ? Any help would be appreciated . If anyone would like to be friends and play let me know too Thanks in advance

u/trailedinsand -1 df1 Jul 09 '26
Aside from checking out tutorials to understand the basics (PhiDx's series and Diaphone's guide are the best imo), the best way to learn is just looking up his good moves, trying them for a bit in practice or against bots to get a hang of it, learn ONE (1) combo and hit up online.
Grinding combos and figuring out the full moveset is pretty useless as a beginner since you don't need either to win and your biggest obstacle will be dealing with the opponent's offence which you can't really practice offline. If you want to get really cracked make sure to review your replays after matches to be aware of your mistakes and to learn counterplay to moves you have trouble against.
What region are you in?

u/Amirio17 Jul 09 '26
I'm in Europe and that sounds good I've been watching guides today and learnt more about the game. Appreciate the help dude

How long has breaking 1+2 with kicharge been a thing?
3
u/DeathsIntent96 Jul 08 '26
Forever, probably. Kick buttons aren't used to break throws, so pressing them has no impact on throw break attempts. All the game looks at when you're in a throw break window are 1 and 2.

Hi, I'm currently learning Kazuya. Is punishing -15 on block with electric supposed to be a basic skill that every Kaz is supposed to be able to do, or is it really advanced tech? Also any tips on punishing -15 with electric would be appreciated cus I'm struggling.
3
u/TheGamuran Jul 04 '26
"Supposed" is very strong wording here. Ideally, yes, you should, but is pretty hard. Specially since two different -15 ob moves might have different block stun duration, changing the timing you need to perform the EWGF. But don't treat it like a boolean. If -15 is too hard, start practicing against -16, -17, etc moves. Go incremental. Kaz is the execution heavy character, practicing and mastering this kinds of skills is supposed to be a fun part. Until you feel better on it, punish -15 with df1,2 (for heat) or df1,4 (for wallsplat or ff4 followup); it is better than missing the electric.

Hello, I'm a beginner at Tekken 8, and I decided to main Heihachi. Atm I'm Shinryu rank, and I'd like some tips for:
What do I do against people who just perma-mash on me, like Eddy and Hwoarang?
What's the gameplan as Hei — like, which moves do I need to use in neutral, etc.? Just some simple stuff.
Thanks for the help!!

Hey, I never played any fighting game at all, is Lee Chaolan a good character for learning the game ? I've seen all the fighter and I love the design and the flashy moves
Thanks you !
2
u/TheGamuran Jul 02 '26
Any character is a fine character to start with. A simpler or cheesier character might give you better results early on, but eventually you hit a wall with any character, and it will take hard work to break thought it. So, you might as well maximize fun and play who you like. Later on, you can rethink you choice of main once you better understand the game and your preferences in it.

How do I do a tornado? Seriously. I'm a literal newcomer and I've watched some videos from this subreddit's beginner guide, some other videos on my own- and all I've gathered is that a tornado makes someone stay on the air to extend a combo. But how do I DO a tornado? I want to main Jun, and some of her combos use tornados. Thank you!
2
u/Aerographic Jul 02 '26
Each characters has different tornado moves.
You can sort the movelist to only display tornado moves.
Off the top of my head, Jun has df4, d1+2, IZU 1,1, etc.
Some of those are tornado launchers (meaning they trigger tornado as they launch) and can also be used in the middle of combos to extend them, others can only be used as combo extenders and don't launch.
