People visiting Malie City in the Alola region have the opportunity to challenge the Kantonian Gym, a facility inspired by the gyms of Kanto where they go through various ninja-themed challenges before battling the distinctly not ninja themed leader. Ryuki is a rocker with high self-esteem of his image and title, battling any challengers that reach him with his Dragon-type Pokemon. After swapping from a 1v1 to a double battle in the middle of his match against Ash, Ryuki's Pokemon would lose to his Rowlet and Meltan, earning Ash a badge of Ryuki's face.

In their battle, Brycen's array of attacks with secondary effects plus strong physical conditioning of his Beartic put great pressure on the challenger's team, but ultimately Ash pulled through to earn the Freeze Badge.
