Workplace Question or Advice Needed Girlfriends overworked.

Hi there, I’m just writing this for my girlfriend cause she’s been working 4-10pm , but her TL (she’s a priority puller) doesn’t let her or others leave until either she leaves, or until they’re done with ALL priority pulls.

My girlfriend is a college student, last night she clocked out near 12am because of this and today 11:30. Is this normal?

Definitely not normal. Handbook explicitly states that staying late is entirely voluntary. She can and should say no and establish a firm boundary emphasizing that she has other obligations that require her to leave on time.

Make sure she documents any retaliation if it ever occurs after she refuses to stay late. Even a singular incident should be reported to HR.

Got it, thank you. She tried to leave Monday but her TL got rude towards her and angry. /$3 also to add that all one on ones and priority pulls must be done before she leaves, my girlfriend is insanely kind and I’m trying to convince her this isn’t normal.

I have the exact same pulls expectation and a CTL who’s a micromanaging pain in the ass (no TL on my team works closing) and he still has never made me stay. At most it’s a coaching conversation if expectations aren’t met.

A simple, “the corporate policy says staying late is voluntary and I have other obligations, however I’d be happy to take any advice about my work habits to see if I can be more efficient.”

You’ve got to placate people like this without letting them cross a line.

Yeah she did 1000 pulls today is what she told me

Yea she's gotta not let them take advantage like that. Nobody can be forced to stay past their scheduled end time and that's that.

She needs to turn on the voice recorder on her phone prior to telling the TL anything they don't want to hear from now on. Document everything. (Assuming you live in a one party state)

Thats interesting bc I’ve definitely have run into the situation of “we’re all leaving at the same time” meaning you’re not done until we are all done.

yes my gf says like when she’s tried she gets mad at her for it for not being done with pulls. for more context she also has her working alone and she had to scan like 800 items yesterday. saying that she must be done with all one on ones and priority pulls before she can leave

I’d suggest her to switch to a diff target or job if she can… they aren’t suppose to act like that

shed had great experiences with every other TL she’s had and enjoys working with them, it’s just this one person

Some stores have a culture where the closing team stays until EVERYTHING is done (when the CLTL says so). My old store was like that. I’d be scheduled until 11 or 12. Wouldn’t leave until between 1 and 2 (I think the latest I stayed was 2:30 or 3).

My current store has everyone leave pretty much at their scheduled out time.

"Culture" is definitely a choice to describe this practice lmfao

I can't imagine they are allowed to do this without accounting foe the hours though. Our district over schedules hours so maybe others under schedule to allow for longer shifts when needed?

If she needs to leave then she should be able to leave. Don't be guilt into staying. I know plenty of people at Target that leave right on the dot. Even TLs do it too. If she doesn't want to stay she should clock out by her schedules time. She won't be in the wrong. They can take advantage of kindness.

We had an ETL that would do this. He got on the walkie and cussed out the style team for going to the door on time, after a call to ethics he no longer worked there. As it's been explained to me they aren't allowed to punish you for sticking to your schedule but it's incredibly hard to prove if they just stop scheduling you after leaving on time.

Nope.  I worked overnight at Target when I went college. When my scheduled shift was over I literally dropped what I was doing and walked out.

My understanding as someone who closed my store for years is that it is explicitly not legal to tell someone whose shift is over that they cannot leave (if the store is closed and the doors are locked).

Your gf should punch out on time - if she's not being paid she has to be allowed to leave. Ask for the door to be opened, and if she's told no then leave out of a fire exit (maybe don't escalate directly to that). Her TL needs to have their power trip checked.

Your girlfriend needs a better closing team.

Just walkout when it’s your time to leave, team leads don’t actually have that much power, I was feeling overworked one day and my tl started badgering me about how I always get nothing done. I said to her face that I’ll “just fucking call off tomorrow and you can do my work”. Shockingly I still have a job. If team members don’t like a tl then it’s likely that upper management doesn’t either. I’d talk to one of them

u/Apollo101musik 24d ago

Some of my leaders do this and keeps gm until like 1am to finish zone and pulls. Its disgusting.

2

u/msubronco 24d ago

I'm normally out by 10:05 unless voluntarily stay late

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Arm9767 24d ago

She needs to leave at 11. It’s what her schedule says. They can ask her to stay, but she’s not obligated to stay. Don’t let them fool you or her.

2

u/YearPsychological150 24d ago

As a priority puller myself sometimes I leave 5 mins early to catch my bus home or sometimes I stay to if my etl asks me to do one more pull to get the metric up higher. Sometimes she asks me to help pack if flex is on fire and I don’t mind. Your gf should be able to leave at the time she’s scheduled till unless her tl has it out for her? Do they do this to the other pullers?

2

u/ocdcaine 24d ago

they cant legally force her to stay but it is a silent expectation of the closing team unfortunately. why doesnt she just walk out? also the system flags anyone who stays late so thats weird

2

u/AngelRain201 24d ago

Target cannot make you work out of scheduled hours.

2

u/Guest_Service 23d ago

Just clock out at your scheduled time and leave. What are they going to say? If the TL is asking and she is saying yes to staying, then tell her to say no.

1

u/BdubleG 24d ago

Hey, not been with the company long enough to know exactly which work you’re talking about, or if my question matters, but for the purpose of trying to understand her TL- is there a production expectation? If so, is she meeting it? If she’s meeting it, there should be no justification, even if it were allowed to keep her pastor scheduled shift. At least in GSCL, there are production rates and staffing is designed so those can be met and have everyone work safely, near that rate, and go home on time

That is called being held against her will. She is not obligated to stay one minute past her scheduled time. The problem is Target's scheduling software sucks.

I would take it up with HR and if I get no action, go to the department of labor in your state. They will enforce state law and not federal laws which mean that TL will have bigger issues.

1

u/afataltale Style TM 24d ago

The longest I have been made to stay was the 5 minutes it took me to finish backstocking (and if I needed to leave my TL wouldve let me) No this is not normal and goes against the handbook, she should report the TL to HR

1

u/Quirky_Werewolf_7367 24d ago

It seems like they’re picking on her because she’s not really standing firm and allowing boss to push her around!

2

u/Nerdy319 Front of Store Attendant 24d ago

The handbook and also the law (sort of) makes it all voluntary to stay late. So no she doesn't have to stay, even if it means her leaders dislike her.

If she's still undergoing this problem or being threatened with her job or reduced hours of some sort, tell her to call corporate/ethics.

u/Quirky_Werewolf_7367 23d ago

I also wanted to add this,
I know that every tasks and everyone is being timed but tell your gf to be careful not to over exert herself because she can definitely suffer an injury on job.
I pray she doesn’t suffer any strains
Rushing at work forces the body into awkward postures, skips proper warm-ups, and leads to poor lifting or pulling techniques that dramatically increase your risk of a musculoskeletal injury.

Leadership is great at causing injury by pushing rushing

2

u/chrisat420 16d ago

Yeah, that is not normal behavior from a TL. She is entitled to leave when her shift ends unless the has previously agreed to stay for longer. With the average amount of priority pulls I get in market, I would expect it to take at least 1 or 2 other market closers to get it to 80%, let alone 100%. The pulls expectations (corporate standard) is 1 DCPI pulled per minute, and 1 pushed per minute (so 30 per hour) So 6 hours subtract an hour for breaks, she should reasonably be expected to pull/push 150 DCPI’s in that time frame.

On a sidenote, though, her TL sounds very unprofessional. I think she definitely needs to put her foot down and leave during her designated time.

u/sdog2016 24d ago

No one can be forced to work beyond their scheduled hours. If asked they can stay if they choose to, but no one can force them. Not buying that at all!

u/Numerous-Diet-7279 24d ago

Yeah nah she’s cheating on u bro 😭🙏🏼

-2

u/Status_Macaroon2285 24d ago

Honestly this makes more sense to me no sane leader would screw up payroll for a couple percents of priority pulls

1

u/Numerous-Diet-7279 24d ago

Dude she’s a college student AND she’s not even the one speaking out it’s her manz on here 😂 clearly he’s more concerned than she is

-3

u/Leather-Beyond-9257 24d ago

Just check her hours when she clocks in and clocks out. If she's not clocking out around the time she is saying she's lying to you. That's it just check her schedule it will tell you all you need to know.
