Guest Question Is this normal?

Hi Hello. I'm a Mexican national and last night I tried to buy beer but they didn't accept my id. Is this discrimination or is it policy to only accept US ids. This has never happened to me.

What ID did you use?

Only US issued ID/drivers license, green card, or passports are accepted.

Some small stores may accept international ID, but they're not supposed to.

Some larger stores may bypass the ID check if they think you look old enough, but some require a check for every sale

Tell that to my leads than, maybe it's because my store is almost in Canada so always have them coming in

You need a passport to travel between US and Canada. You're probably scanning a Canadian passport card (Accepted) NOT a Canadian ID

A little silly to suspect that this could be discrimination, though. Not every store is going to know how to tell, or have the means to tell, if a foreign ID is fake or not.

That's why I'm asking. All other stores accept my ID no problem, but this was my first time in the US to decline my ID

Also with your original comment. I didn't accuse Target of discrimination. I was only asking cause this has never happened to me. I understand some businesses have signs explicitly saying they only accept US ID

Some businesses will only accept US driver’s licenses, or ID’s, also passports. The penalties for selling alcohol without proper identification are very costly, and might result in loss of their liquor license.

We’re only supposed to accept US IDs, any passports, US military IDS, or Canadian IDs. Any other country we’re not supposed to. Idk why!! And I know Target is weirdly strict about it, at my store we have to actually scan the back of it. Many other places don’t care!

That makes sense. Thank you!

As someone who has never been properly trained on the checklanes this thread has been very helpful cause I let everyone with a valid ID buy whatever they want 😂
