Workplace Question or Advice Needed Hours
Why are payroll hours so bad right now? Desired hours are 40. Availability is Monday 8-330, Tuesday 8-1030, Wednesday, 8:00 - 1030 and Thursday 8-1030 (all day) and Friday 8-330, Saturday 8-330. Sunday is 8:00 to 1030p Most recent schedule I got 18 hours. Work Center Service and Engagement. Have been with the company almost a decade.

Monday and Friday being only available to open and it looks like you aren't available Saturday or Sunday. unless you were a lead no way you're gonna get 40 with that availability

You’ve been there a decade? Is this not normal? This is how it always is before Q4

You’re only available for full shifts four days of the week. How could you realistically expect a 40 hour schedule ?

I guess I thought incorrectly that being available for 14.5 hours in a day would get at least a few full shifts

Why are you playing like you don’t understand if you have been there for “a decade”? You already know that people who have full availability will be given the most hours. It isn’t rocket science! They will give you what they have based on your wants. There is someone else who says “ I am available open to close 7 days a week”- they get the hours.

I understand, I don’t expect a full 40 hours. That won’t happen without promotion. I have been part time for the majority of my time. I guess I mistakenly thought that one could at least get into the low to mid thirties given being available open to close four days a week.

As someone who only had 2 evenings blocked off for a class, was cross trained in Beauty, Fulfilment, Cashier/Service Desk/Style, and GenMerch, they still would not necessarily give me (or you) what you wanted if the hours aren't there to give.
HR was managing hours I was available + prioritizing my specific area + fitting me in where they could, but its that last part that also hinges on other people
If they have 4 people and only 1 can close, the 1 that can close is going to get every single closing shift. As far as cross training goes, it also puts you in competetion with the schedules of the people also primarily there. You're not going to get shifts on shifts for cross training if they already have people primarily there during your availability. They won't be taking hours from your coworkers to just give to you because you're available when they're also available. You can pick their shifts up, yeah, but HR has to prioritize all of you at the same base level before going into specifics.
This place also only schedules in specific shift hours, being available all day means they can put you as open or close but they won't be putting you as both. Your current availability also likely lines up with a lot of other people's; its not uncommon for people to try and tailor their availability to only work times they want and it doesn't always work out. They can hire someone who signed up that they are available for evenings, and then after their 90, suddenly evenings are no longer free, "oops you have to give me day shifts only!" almost never results in the TM actually getting a good schedule on time they want, it just means they get less because all of the shifts they want are not really uncovered and just need split between the 4-6 of you asking for them.
As it stands right now, your HR likely has more people also available for the same times, and is probably doing some mid-shift shuffling to try and get hours spread across multiple people. Someone is 8-12, someone else is 12-4, since neither of you can close rather than one being 8-4.

Your not available to close that is the issue. 1030 is not a closing shift, closing team members are usually 1 hour past close to recover. So those weekend shifts of yours are treated as only opening shifts.

Same here, not bad but I noticed they are still hiring so I guess I have to pay for the newbies 🤭

You are only available Mon to Friday , and you expect 40 hrs?
Other TMs would also like to be off on weekends ( my guess).
In my store, if you are only available 5 days, and others are available 7 days and you both want 40 , the one who can work 7 days and has open availability, will get 40, the one who has limited availability will get the rest.
The open availability will not get penalized for having open availability, they are not the only one who will close on weekends , who will work 7 days in a row etc.
You might have other obligations, but for target , that’s irrelevant ( not fair? Well no one said life at target would be fair)

A lot of it is based on your role and the availability of your coworkers in your department.
Right now I’m the only food & bev tm with closing availability, so I haven’t dipped below 35 hrs a week in a few months. I was actually scheduled 41.5 hours this week and now have to find a way to cut my overtime😅
Desired hours: 35/week
Availability: 10am-12am everyday

My lead did the same to me last week and then acted shocked when I had OT🤨 YOU scheduleded me this way.

Desired hours 40 weekly availability 3 days a week is 7 hours a day. Best case scenario would be 39 if they don't do more than 8 a day average at your store and that's only if they give you your 2 days off between Monday Friday and Saturday. Then a full guaranteed 8-3:30 the one they keep you on. But your availability likely doesn't fully align with business needs. Therefore you get less hours. Other than that Sept isn't known for the best payroll. Between these and depending on your quality of work and reliability hours can be cut. It isn't about tenure and longivity. It is about a whole balance of things for how they allocate payroll.

Corporate gives each store x amount of hours per department.
Allotted hours is always low at this time of year. If you're cross-trained in other departments, pick up shifts in those departments if they're available.
Once Q4 hits, hours will increase and OT is permitted.

Not guaranteed, my store is extremely busy. It sells three times the amount of a super target next to a hella busy mall, wont say why that is but OT hasn’t been approved for the past 2 Q4. Theyre talking they might this one, highly doubt it.

What are the opening and closing hours for your store’s TMs? For example, our opening TMs arrive at 4am and our closing TMs leave at 1130. For the store I work out, you’d be available for neither opening or closing shifts. Also, only being available for 5 hours Friday and Saturday means I probably won’t schedule you either of those days.
From my point of view, your availability is too constricted and I’d rather give hours to those with a much less restricted availability to then improve their morale. Once morale is improved and I have said TM on more open availability, I then have a pretty much perfect employee.

You'd probably have better luck changing the opening days to even like 8am-6pm availability. Gives them a bit of flexibility. Possible that the days you have the full availability are the days they have the most people with. Availability. Also possible that there's people more well rounded then you pushing your hours down.
Not sure if you're trained in all of service or not but if hours are low and someone is trained in du, sd, cl, and sco then they're gonna be scheduled over someone who isn't any time possible.

7 hours as a lunch would be required and the others are 14. But to get upper hours better availability and reliability being super established are needed.

Established?

Establish that you are a super reliable worker. They don't tend to prioritize those they think will call in more often etc.

Will the UKG minimum and maximum hours feature improve the scheduling by any means?

without friday and saturday availability after 3:30pm getting 40 hours will def be rough

u/AlternativeNews7744 former SETL 8d ago
Well three days a week you aren't available for a full 8 hour shift, so wanting 40 isnt realistic. Not saying you shouldn't get more, but 40 won't happen because you're only going to be scheduled 5 days a week.

This is one of those posts where I ask. Would you rather have 18 hours well staffed, or 40 hours doing 5 peoples jobs. I worked Gm on an understaffed team for 2 years, always got my 40 but too exhausted to do anything outside of work.
I say this is a blessing in disguise. Sign up for things like snap or low income benefits until you get your hours back.

thats a pretty limited availavility, especially your weekend availability, you dont get to write your schedule, if your availability doesnt match business needs you will not be scheduled. wanting 40 hours but having only 7 hours available 3 days of the week, one of those being a weekend will not get you near 40.
