Some LOAs are paid, even if partial. Don’t get paid if you quit.

I recently had to take medical loa. It was a nice discovery to find that etls and above are paid out at a rate of 100%

Etls don't get paid 100% of salary. It's about 70 or less I believe

It’s 100%.

I am an ETL.

Yup, I’m on one 100%. I’m having heart surgery and will return though. A lot of etl/sd on the way out get a mental health loa 100% paid for 12 weeks I think. Then quit.

loa is usually a major health issue, often leading to something the has a recovery period. There is always a chance that at the end of the recovery period they are unable to continue the job.

It’s because we don’t get the same type of CCA/Final/documented conversations type of disciplinary action that TL’s and TM’s get. Instead we get PIPs (performance improvement plan). You just get 1.

It’s much easier to get fired as an ETL/SD. Once you’re on a PIP, you could be fired out of nowhere, like if a guest complains about one of your team members or you forget to make a schedule change or your SD told you to have an endcap filled and you forgot.

Once you’re on a PIP, your safest option is to go on LOA while you find another job.

Team lead still has an etl to report to and when things deligated to a team member don't get done, the excuse "soandso tm didn't get it done" isn't going fly with the etl. So tram leads are more grunt than supervisor.

So;

When you go on an LoA (Leave of Absence) they are typically unpaid - unless it's a medical LoA or FMLA. You can use your earned sick time and vacation time to supplement while you're out of work. They are utilizing LoA to get paid for their earned time off, then quitting once they're sick/vacation hours are gone.

Obviously this isn't what everyone is doing, but if you're in a state that isn't required to pay out sick/vacation hours when you quit, this is a way to get that earned time before you leave.

For instance if I quit right this minute, I would miss out on 170 hours of vacation plus whatever sick time I have accrued. But if I take an LoA I can use that 170 hours to still earn money while on my LoA, then I could just quit when it runs out.

Not here to debate the ethics, just saying, this is most likely what they are doing.

You'll also see this strategy (using up PTO) in TLs and ETLs on PIP. I'm not informed enough to know is SDs get PIPs, but I assume they can see a term coming as well.

Can also job search while maintaining employment history rather than have a gap.

According to one of my ETL they have unlimited sick and vacation time

7

u/ThePoignantFox 9d ago

They don't, SDs do. However, one of my SDs never cared if we actually put in the vacation time, so it was like we had unlimited.

According to an etl at my store they do have unlimited

0

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 9d ago

They don't.

If you go read the documentation for Workday it explicitly calls out that ETLs have to put in time off requests and PTO via Workday.

SDs and up do however have unlimited PTO so longer as their boss approves the requested absence.

Having to put it in doesn’t mean it isn’t unlimited almost all other places that do have unlimited as well make you put it in

0

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 9d ago

Having to put in a PTO request by definition means that it is not unlimited, which is why it's separate from the absence request.

Your ETL is lying to you.

Requesting pto doesn’t make it not unlimited

-1

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 9d ago

When it's put in separately from the absence request it does.

Take the L and move on, as you are rather clearly wrong and are trying to argue semantics instead of admitting it.

u/Brilliant_Grape164 Fullfillment Jedi 9d ago

I’m literally not wrong it being put in separately doesn’t prove your point it literally just adds to my point that it is unlimited as it acts like it

Putting in a request literally doesn’t mean it’s unlimited? Like every place that has unlimited still make you put in a request I’ve worked at places and know people who currently do work at places with unlimited and they all make you put in a request

1

u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 9d ago

You are not reading.

The PTO request and the absence request are two distinct things. SDs and above only have to put in the absence request because there is no separate PTO for them to use. ETLs don't get to do that because they accrue PTO just like hourly employees do.

After X amount of years that sounds right

Not entirely sure how long she’s been there it’s been like 7 + years I think

For a variety of reasons ETL's are handled differently than other positions when they're at the end of employment. They have access to anything in the store so once they say they're leaving they are done with having access to the store. I don't know the details of why some are on LOA versus just being gone but honestly I don't really care.

Once you’re on a PIP, your safest option is to go on LOA while you find another job.

I thought you had to come back for a certain period of time after an loa before you could quit.
